Of seeing the same old top teams without unlv year in and year out!

It’s bizarre. Aside from … basically SJSU? Seems like every team since 2001 has been atop the MWC besides UNLV. Or at least having a real chance at the regular season title with a week or two to go.
I’m talking nationally

I've accepted that we will not be a top tier program in my lifetime. I'd be very happy with being in MWC champ contention the last five reg season games every two/three years or so and a NCAA appearance every 5 years.

I know what you are saying. That’s pretty much where we are at.

That’s the slippery slope of accepting and celebrating mediocrity and less than mediocrity. Allows for a “new normal” when not enough people fight back, even worse, when too many people enable it.

Question is....What does Wyoming, Utah State, and Colorado State have that we don't ? Better coaches, recruiting, facilities ?????

Better Coaches - Yes
Better Recruiting - Yes
Better Facilities - No ( But the T&M is NOT an advantage anymore. It's too large for any crowd we'll have in the foreseeable future - we need an 8000 seat stadium - very tight to the floor - where seats can be at a premium on good years )
Better Fans - Yes
Better Athletic Department and AD - Hell Yes

Stability, competent athletic departments, productive synergy between school admin and the athletic department. If UNLV had these qualities we'd be a top 40 program at least, have a respectable football program and probably be a favorite to land a spot in the next P5 expansion because of our facilities and the fact we're a hot up-and-coming sports town.

Supporting UNLV basketball for me (in order for it to be enjoyable) means coming to grips that we are a fringe top 100 team. We are by no means,....in any way a top 25 college basketball program. We used to be.. a long long time ago. we were the best. We might get to a sweet 16 here or there every 10-15 years or so. Maybe get ranked every 10 years or so, but we will NEVER be a top program again in our lifetime. If you believe differently, you are going to be met with a lot of angst, frustration and disappointment being a Rebel hoops fan.

I feel ya. I keep my expectations grounded in the current reality but still hope for a return to being a consistent top 25 program. I know that will take time as there is not top-name coach bearing down our door. Regardless, I actually think CKK has the ability turn it around. We just need to be patient and allow him to work thru a rebuilding process. Bringing UNLV back is not going to be easy.

I think the success of the football program is closely tied to the basketball program. If UNLV football can start winning consistently, that would give UNLV a chance at getting into a major conference, I know it is somewhat of a pipe dream, which would immediately provide the cash flow needed for success!

UNLV could hire John Wooden and the admin would still screw that up. One guy can't turn around the mess. we have. A real commitment to athletics has to come from the top. CKK can improve our program, but we still have idiots at the top handcuffing him.. for instance the mask mandate for attendees at the T&M. Stupid shit like that. No wonder Beard bolted after two weeks. Do you blame him ?

You just never know, there aren’t guarantees. Take a coach like Howland, who has had a pretty damn good career. Seems to be more in that “won’t miss” boat based on his history. Now Miss State isn’t a juggernaut itself, but he’s built his own brand, sending lots of players to the league. And it’s a ridiculously competitive/high level league, a league where funny recruiting is “allowed”. Yet in 7 years, he’s essentially a 500 coach at 2M per year and he will have one NCAAT to his credit and that was a first round loss. A lot of money for a garbage ROI.

But I agree with your general point, it’s more than coaching at UNLV. You need to be on the same page top to bottom with athletics to succeed and UNLV is, basically, a mess.

The board of regents, who control UNLV, is made up of elected positions, so in truth the fault is placed squarely on the voters for putting fools in charge of the University system, and thus UNLV!

If you don't care about the Athletic Department and hire TKM in the 1st place, you get what you get, then DRF, wanted P5 job and got Missouri, I have no clue why they hired her, but they will find out soon, when she has to hire both football and basketball coach, they are a bottom feeder in SEC.

If you UNLV can become a top 100 program again, I can live with it, too old to worry about it, dreaming of top 30 program is over with me, not going to happen unless they get into P5 conference.
