Got a Quarterback

Ok that isn’t as enticing especially when you see Sluka ranked ahead of him. Speaking of which Sluka is visiting Liberty and Memphis.

I'm shocked the shine hasn't worn off Sluka after this year.

Like I said Kiffin thought enough of him Ol Miss brought him in on a visit. So trusting he and Mullen's judgement here.

Both Hajj and Sluka had better stats before they arrived here than this kid. Probably because he played higher competition. Additionally - any way you evaluate it he throws WAYYYYYY to many INT's.

So on3 has him as 4 star 91 ovr, they have him as the 3rd best qb and 25th best transfer. You’re looking at the composite ranking from all services. 247 doesnt think as highly of him as on3 does. The composite has him at 30th qb and 315 in the portal.
On3 just updated their ratings and he’s now 7th on their list

Our QB was not a passer at all!
He was serviceable for a few games but by the end of the season he had games where he was 5-18?!

I hope this guy is better, seeing how he was playing ACC ball instead of at Campbell or Holy Cross!
The defense started pinning back their ears and going after our QB as the season progressed and his passing didn't!

They were in the FCS.

He was in ACC.

I think that plays a part in that.

Pitt, Syracuse and Mississippi all had him in for a visit so there's something there.

But the TD to INT ratio not great I agree.

He had two bad games to finish the season. Was otherwise good in the passing game.

One of the games you are using for your example he didn't have Ricky White! Or Casey Cain!

(Am I doing the exclamation points right?)

Not sure what you are looking at from the link I provided. Where are the 4 stars you speak of on this kid. They only show 3 stars.

I know about the other rankings and yes, I knew they were worse. But, people were talking about On3 so I was staying on context.

ON3 did have him as 4* a couple of days ago. Magic comes to UNLV and drops to 3*, what is new?

His schedule at Virginia was brutal.

Just his last 6 games went:

11/23, #13 SMU (L)
11/16, @ #8 Notre Dame (L)
11/9, @ #18 Pitt (W)
10/26, UNC (6-6 team) (L)
10/19, @ #10 Clemson (L)
10/12, Louisville (8-4 team) (L)

Yes, he lost all of those games, except 1. Yes he threw a lot of interceptions (13 TD to 11 Int). But he was also behind an O line that was shorter and lighter than UNLV's. He ate 39 sacks, which is 2 less than the 41 UNLV had this season. Except UNLV played 2 more games. I'll give him a chance. Behind a better O line, he'll make the plays we need. That being said, Mullen is far from done. We need 2 more.

In the link you provided, under where all the sorting options are, theres “on3 industry”, “on3 ranking” and “industry comparison” if you click “on3 ranking” it will show you the on3 rankings without taking other companies rankings into the equation. At this moment he’s a 90 overall 4 star according to on3 scouts.

I see what you are saying. They took their On3 ranking and added it to the 247 ranking and divided by two and they modified their original ranking to give him the 3 stars. That seems to make for a fair ranking. I like that they do that.

I like the So. Carolina QB as a back up, Below type of change of pace guy. Typically I don't like multiple qb approach, but it worked well with Mullen before.

Fifty-fifty chance that he is our starter next year. Friel is probably better and I imagine we recruit one more QB before this is all done.

Friel is a SR and done I believe... and no, even if he had eligibility left, he's not starting over guys Dan brings in.
This is the guy Dan wanted. He's a high P4 talent with an arm. Was sought after by other P4 programs.

As it stands we have a RS-freshman as our QB so Mullen needs to bring in at least two QBs to give us some options. In that light this kid is a decent pickup. If he’s the only QB pickup then I’m worried. A bit undersized and the TOs are rather troubling. Runs ok, much better arm than Hajj, seems like a kid who could work in the Mullen’s offense but I’d definitely want another QB to compete for the starting role.

If Mullen is considered a “home run” hire why are some of you already down on his pick for QB?
The thing that many of you critics fail to realize is he have thrown int’s at higher rate than most would like, that was against ACC level comp, we aren’t playing ACC level comp in the MWC. If Mullen picked him and you think Mullen is a good coach how about getting through fall camp before giving the QB a vote of no confidence!

Mullen knows a thing or two about QBs. He knows what attributes he is looking for with HIS system.
If this is our back up or our starter, cool. I trust that he knows what he wants.
Everyone knows that QB is a priority. I don't think he will miss on this position.

Haj for the most part did not run well on designed run plays. His best runs came when everything broke down and he had to scramble. This kid runs QB designed runs very well. He sells something else very well and then takes off.

Saw him play a couple of times this year. Underwhelming. Lots of turnovers. Got benched for last game, the fans were happy. Not exactly a splash QB recruit. Hopefully we can pull someone better.
I wondered why you mentioned that he was benched but failed to mention how the backup played. Then I saw the box score and their backup threw under 200 yards, zero touchdowns and 2 picks.

Sounds like the situation in VA was not a QB issue. This is a good pickup.
