Gary Patterson?

If UNLV were to consider moving on from Arroyo after 2 years (I don't think they will. I think the buyout is too big. Probably gets one more year)

But if they were, this better be the 1st phone call you make..

Bad? Like off the field?

Or did things just stagnate there. That's a long run for a coach these days.
Sorry. This is my guess. My issue, in terms of my writing skills, is that I assume that you know what’s going on in my head while I’m writing.

You wouldn’t remove a coach who took you from MWC to P5, who is in his 20th season, before the season ends without a reason to do so. You’d let him finish the season and leave with dignity (my opinion).

Or, maybe, he supports the HeyReb! mascot and he needed to be canceled for it. I’d fire him on the spot for that, too!

Possible. Maybe even likely.

Another possibility is there were discussions before the year started that his seat was hot.

They've had middling results this year (past 4 actually).

Possible they told him he was going to be out regardless how the rest of season went.

Maybe he just said what's the point. Gives one of his assistants a chance to 'interview' for the job by taking over for rest of the season.

Just a thought, with the Big 12 in turmoil, Dallas Fort Worth in turmoil, time to move on to retirement.

Patterson seems like a lifer.

If he wants to coach there will be a pretty long line of suitors for him.

Maybe takes a year off, does some studio stuff. I expect him to be back on a sideline sooner than later.

I typically don't close the book on a coach after two years. Arroyo's recruiting on paper has been good. But if he goes 0-18 to start his career it's pretty hard to defend him..

You could be right.

In this day and age where results need to be immediate and it could be a stagnant thing with wins and losses are nearly the same every year at TCU and the people behind the scenes want more or it could just be wanting a change to someone sexier?

If he is out there even if he doesn’t coach this year, we could be aggressive and proactive and set something up with Patterson for 2023 if Arroyo continues with his high level of ineptitude.

Behind the scenes of course.

He got everything he could out of that program. I think it really is a situation where things have stagnated.

I agree, except for one note. Listening to ESPN radio this morning. They note that the contract states that buyout can be paid in monthly installments and is nullified beginning at any job (not even football related) Arroyo takes.

I dont think it matters right now since we have an interim AD and school has said it won't bring in full time AD until 2022. But they basically must go to a bowl game in 2022 season for him to come back in year 3, imo.

Just read they wanted him to finish out the season. He said no.

That sounds about right.

I would say if he went 4-8 or 5-7 with a win over Reno he might get the 4th year.
But a Reno win would be an absolute must in either of those scenarios.

Tough spot to be in for him. Writing on the wall. Can't be easy being in that spot.

Possible he wanted to do an assistant a solid on his staff and let them 'audition' for the job?

Don't know..

"They note that the contract states that buyout can be paid in monthly installments..."

We're in there then. A dollar a month for 3 million months.

Sign me up. Basically a dollar per nevada resident.

Or $1.15 for every clark county resident. I doubt t reno residents want to fire the guy who may never beat them 🤦‍♂️

This is ridiculous. The greatest Coach in the history of G5 is available. Go and get him!

UNLV will always be last to anything. Shittt, nothing will change. Gary Patterson is available. Raise the damn money and go get him!

I’d make the move but it’s not my money and it’s not my money to find.

Would be an absolute no brainer with the resources, assuming he’d come. He’d elevate you to the top of your conference within a couple of years, imo.

But it’s kinda similar to the whole Pitino pipe dream to me. Perfect, but will never be seriously considered.

What he's been particularly good at during most of his career is finding players that fit what he likes to do defensively.

At the very least you make phone calls to see if there is any interest. Buyout would be rough for UNLV..But you at least inquire...

We just need someone who both loves the Rebels and has a few hundred mil.

Pretty much a no-brainer but we all know UNLV will miss the boat once again!
Patterson would make too much sense here but this is UNLV, making sense and having a plan is not in the cards! Smh

I'm not saying if the money wasn't here, GP wouldn't take a MWC job.

I'm just saying I dont know if he would take THIS job. There will be 15 other schools with the same amount of booster support (or more) who are potentially looking for a head coach.

I've always been of the believe "if you believe in you're ability to coach, UNLV isn't a bad job" ... particularly with the facility and stadium in place. Hes 60 and a K-State alumnus. He took over TCU who was 8-4 and 7-5 in the two seasons before he took over.

Why would 0-209 UNLV be his destination? Unless he wants to build it and believes he can. He's got the coaching acumen no doubt.

2 more days before our big first UNLV Football win. Tacoosssssss for everyone!!!

Considering I thought they should have won several games recently, and continue to come up on the wrong side of the score, I will just not say anything this time around regarding who will lose!

Calling hiring Patterson a "no brainer" is a bit much.

Sure he is "available" now. But there are many hurdles to this.

$$$ from what he would demand to the buyout. That already pretty much excludes him.

Then there the whole idea of assuming he would touch UNLV with a 100 ft pole. Excluding the fact that many good, P5 jobs would love to have him and pay him more, even if we found some sort of savior benefactor that could buy out Arroyo and pony up for Patterson. Why would he want to come to UNLV, the destroyer of careers?

Sure, kick the tires. Reach out, guage interest. Go for it. But assuming that UNLV would be able to have the tiniest bit of an actual chance with this guy is a bit crazy to me. At elast Pitino had legit interest once upon a time.

This!!!!!

Hot seat schools.

That’s the thing. It’s beyond a pipe dream, worse than Pitino even.

But it goes to show you how pathetic our programs are. The constant clamoring for something we can never get, crossing your fingers hoping you can beat a 500 team, (we’ve seen this) hoping for your own coach to lose so you can move on to next, who will undoubtedly be a dud … these last 5 or 6 years of Rebel athletics have been … I don’t know the word for it.
