I just found out talking to a buddy who is a fan of Sam Houston, they are upgrading their stadium and will be playing their games in Shell Energy Stadium, which is in downtown Houston and is where the Houston Dynamo play. A purpose built soccer stadium that is pretty cool, and probably very very similar to where Kansas played us last year.
So travel to this game will be easier, since Huntsville is about an hour to hour and a half from Houston depending on the airport that you are flying to.

So it basically a Houston road trip 2 years in a row. Which is great for me!

You know what?

I’m gonna book it.

August in Houston is delightful...
It was pretty brutal at the Houston game but it was overcast too so it definitely could have been worse. At least they have some good Tex Mex and the steakhouses are awesome to help make up for the weather. That said, did that last year so this I will try Miami of Ohio. Not exactly football mecca but I can check out the NFL HOF and Rock & Roll HOF while there so makes it worth it.

This stadium has a bit more built in shade. But that does nothing for the humidity. Last year's game could have been much worse to be honest for August in Houston.
But there are some nice places to eat and some cool spots really close to this stadium, which is better than TDECU on the Houston campus.

Why would I do that when I can go to Miami!

Not just for selfish reasons, this is a really smart game. Having a game in Texas, especially the Houston area, can be huge for recruiting. There is so much talent in this area.

Unless they stick the away fans seats under the scoreboard on the North endzone... lol They have lots of club seating, and the stadium already being orange will make it feel real crowded for Sam Houston. Averaged around 9,000 per game in 2024 so all those orange seats will make it look fuller than it potentially will be, especially vs a team like UNLV (if were ranked that might change)...

I am going to have to get your recommendations for food out there. What is worth my time? Looking primarily for Texas Steaks and a half decent taco shop.

He would know better than me but I can tell you that the steakhouse we went to B&B Butchers was awesome and relatively reasonably priced for a steakhouse. Not Capital Grille or Ruth Chris prices a notch below but tasted just as good.

We can circle back once this game gets closer, for sure.

There are several places worth going to around the stadium which is good, better than the UH stadium.

I have heard good things about B&B, but have never been. Dating a Vegetarian usually means I don't go to steakhouses much anymore, and I feel like I can do steak better at home anyway. However, Steak 48 is probably my favorite place that I have been to. It is a bit more upscale though.

There are some good places for tacos, but not many "taco stands" that aren't like a food truck. Most are sit down restaurants. But I know of one or two that are good.

Steak is the one thing I always like better in restaurants. The cut has a lot to do with it I am sure. I'm not cooking Snake River Farms Wagyu at home vs what you get at a steakhouse.

My preferred method is smoking it low and slow then searing it hot and fast. The local HEB also offered dry aged texas Wagyu ribeye's so that helps as well.
Restaurants almost exclusively do steaks hot and fast except for prime ribs of course. Almost impossible to get it perfectly uniformly cooked throughout that way.
I actually smoke a lot got rid of my grill. My smoker is the bomb though and I have put out some good stuff from that! The one time I did Snake River Farms brisket was amazing.
I have a small Kamado for smoking and a giant Blackstone. I tedn to finish on the black stone since it is more predictable, but you can do the smoke/reverse sear with your smoker if you can get that thing to 400+ deg.

I actually do that, smoke and then reverse sear it and it does turn out good! I still prefer restaurant steaks but I have never made a steak outside of what I get at Whole Foods. Brisket, ribs and Chuck Roast is another matter...or shotgun shells!

Just don't try to go to the R&R HoF if the Browns are in town that day. We made that mistake last year when we were in Cleveland for the Rock Hall inductions. The Bengals were in town and it was a frigging nightmare trying to negotiate traffic with all the road controls. And forget about parking. We were lucky that the lot attendant took pity on us and let us park for free at a spot just inside the gate on the opposite side of the stadium from the Hall. It was a bit of a hoof, but we were glad to make it on the only day we had.

Thanks for the advice! I will plan that visit on Friday and the NFL HOF on Sunday.
