Finally got him!

“We’re never going to sign players that have offers from power 4. We don’t have the NIL”
“Look at who we’re offering? He’s not unlv quality”
Then we sign a 7 foot transfer that Arizona did not want to lose and had very solid offers and now it’s nothing to get excited about? lol listen guys, we have had enough to be miserable about for the past 2 decades. We can be excited by this and still know the season is most likely going to be a failure because that’s how it’s been for forever now.

IT'S OK TO GET EXCITED ABOUT NEW PLAYERS. YES NOBODY KNOWS HOW WELL THEY WILL PLAY BUT FANS WANTED change and they got it. JUST THAT CHANGE BRINGS HOPE. NO MORE KRUGER . LET'S MAKE UNLV REBELGIRL WRONG. POSITIVE VIBES. CHANGE THE CULTURE WITH CONFIDENCE.

I think it’s funny that change was wanted and very necessary but now that it’s happened, after many here on rebelnet thought it would not happen due to money are now quick to be negative?

They are quick to say things have not changed because they don’t like Pastner as coach or after one recruit has been signed but identified as sub par because he didn’t start at his last college.

We now have a coach that was eager to get back into the college coaching game (here at UNLV of all places) and is considered a good recruiter who has ideas and a plan for attacking the NIL landscape.

This description of Pastner sounds like a “polar opposite” of the guy preceding him who sounded and looked lost while on the job here most of the time.

It is a breath of fresh air here now and some are even anxious for what might be coming next for UNLV basketball, count me as one who is eager to see what Josh will do next.

I’m fine with being one of the few that is anticipating the next move that will be made. I have been negative here because of bad hires in football and basketball for years and argued with many about Lon, Rice, Menzies, Cheeseburger and Kevin not to mention Hauck and Arroyo.

Now arguing, not so much! Football is on good ground now and I think basketball is heading in a new and good direction. I love it and I ain’t asking anyone to agree with me or for their permission!

I think Josh was the right hire for the situation due to the lack off money and I will go it alone thinking that, if need be.

Get it done for us here at UNLV, coach Pastner!

Pastner wasn't the 1st choice for most of us but just his enthusiasm and energy is an upgrade over Kruger . Go Rebs.,!

Need another big man. Emmanuel wont play all 40 minutes, and big men seam to get into foul trouble. Would like a guy that can play 15ish minutes without a drop off

Agree with this!

But bad bigs who don’t know how to defend get into foul trouble, see Cherry or N’Diaye and most every other big that’s been here the last 10+ years.

I just watched a young big with UCF play most of the game in the CBC tournament against Nebraska and he did not get the dumb fouls our centers would get.

I hope Pastner develops this with Stephen!

If Syracuse wanted him he can’t be completely useless.
that’s the team that we shoulda played in our prime.

What you fail to understand many don’t see Pastner as a big upgrade to Kruger. Yes he’s an upgrade but to what extent instead of 18 win seasons and 6th it’s 20 wins and 5th in the MWC. That’s not exciting. Yes Pastner had some success but majority of that success was in his early years with majority of the ex coaches players so it’s hard to get up and think that he’s all of a sudden figured things out. I will be rooting for him and may like some of the players he’s bringing in. But until he actually has success here it’s a coin flip

I get this!

I just believe it when he says the time away from coaching allowed him to gain perspective? That is why I have hope in what he is saying this time at his press conference and I’ve seen coaches where this was the case. Josh in the past has had his limitations and X’s and O’s was one aspect he struggled with so what did he do this time, he hired an “x’s and o’s” guy. That shows some growth if only initially. When you aren’t good at something you hire someone who fills that void, an “x’s and o’s” guy is that this time around. He may fall flat in a year or two but I’m not hoping for that?!

I hope he is successful so we don’t have to be at the exact same place we are now, a losing team trying to hire someone to stop the bleeding 2 years from now!

That’s great that you have faith. But understand a lot of fans need to see it. I will support Pastner but he does not excite me in any way. I hope he’s learned from his past and time away but before I get excited with him he needs to win games.

yea i give the hire a B . It would of been a C plus if he was not so likeable and energetic . I believe with all my scarlet heart that if we can get into the B12 or better that we would be a TOP 15 in BB and FB. We have more of a chance than ANYBODY to increase our fanbase 100x. EASILY. It Vegas and Vegas sells itself. Plus with all the $ in Vegas it would be not far fetched that we would take a HUGE leap with a P4 invite. Vegas ONLY likes winners. Watch what happens if the Vegas Knights if they take a nose dive.

Opposing fan base is what drives the Raiders. I was told 17,000 Iowa State fans came here last time. I know we might not have everything lined up perfectly to get inclusion to the P4. I think we are close ,but it would be a great business decision to allow us in early. We would lead any conference by atleast 8-10x more opposing fans coming to Vegas than any other School. It would reenergize the conference and bring back excitement.

I would be over the moon if he could consistently put up double doubles. Not saying he couldn’t develop into that. But the score of that game against CMU was 41-94.
Remember when Karl Jones went ham on Bethesda? (Had to look that game up, I didn’t actually remember the team off the top of my head). Plus, 30 minutes of PT is a lot to ask of a raw 7 footer.

I’m in a spicy mood right now and I’m only challenging for the hell of it. I’m happy we got him but I just don’t see him putting up consistent points. I’ll jump on board if we are hyping him up for his rebounding and block potential.
I actually have footage of Karl Jones. Couldn’t be bothered to find it at this time of the hour..

I’m sorry, I can’t get onboard with people that poo poo a talent like Stephens. I’ve been begging CKK to get somebody like Keba (BYU/UTAH), and Stephen’s mimics his game, he can be a rebound machine and protect the rim.

We cannot have soft 5’s anymore if we want to win, I’m happy to see Pastner address this critical need and have been impressed that he’s prioritizing athleticism (he’s retaining the most athletic guys on the roster). CJP is working overtime to get the right pieces with the right staff behind him.

I’m hoping we can get a couple dogs, get some lunch pail/glue guys because those players will push it in practices, and CJP is going to run a high energy practice.

I agree, Bear Cherry transferring to Sac St. tells me that CJP may have had a talk with him about his future at UNLV. From what I remember of Pastner’s Memphis and GT teams, was that they were all long and athletic and could run the floor.

I bet Josh had a discussion with N’Diaye too and I bet he priced himself out of the market. It doesn’t make sense to stay initially and then transfer later unless he thought staying could mean he could leverage UNLV for more money.

He’s not worth anymore money unless he took a big leap forward!

Why do we keep assuming every player that transfers is doing so for more money... Simply put, Pape needed the playing time to increase in order to continue developing. If in conversation with Josh it becomes apparent that we were/are bringing in a big man with better potential and giving him those minutes so that development isnt going to happen then why would you stay. Hes a lengthy lanky big with below average scoring and rebounding given the amount of minutes he averaged per game (yes hes raw and those number could increase over time, but kids arent sticking around to develop, they want playing time to increase future paydays), hes not going to get a huge payday

Then why not stay get developed (he sure needs it) play, show better and then get paid?

He would have had playing time here next year as a backup just like last year but he left?

I don’t buy he he just wanted playing time because he would have got that here, he left because he wanted both!

And he is not worth an increase and he has a long way to go in development, especially on the offensive end!

Not necessarily...
Because a good coach would bring in a veteran big man to balance the development of a young raw talent like Stephen or Pape and not expect him to carry 30 minutes a game. You dont want to have 2 raw young 5's as the core to your interior post play. So if your project is going to be basically a redshirt freshman in Stephen and you are going to give him 20 minutes a game, and your veteran Big will give you the remainder of that and there isnt room for another.

If that’s the case, I would rather they leave now than after next season. Develop yourself on someone else’s dime.

So you think they paid Stephen as a backup developmental C? I think Stephen is the starter, the guy you described would have been N’Diaye!

No, Im saying you have a solid veteran center that can do either. Unless he had elite offensive skills I wouldnt start that amounts to a redshirt freshman and expect him to play 30 minutes a game, not would I have expected Pape to play that. Stephen has higher upside as the developmental prospect and Pape wouldve been relegated to where he likely wouldve been this year had Rob not been hurt- 3rd big in the rotation with minimal minutes mostly during mop-up or foul trouble..

The fact that Cottrell got more minutes in the conference tournament than Pape, tells me all I need to know about how Pape was progressing.
Conditioning will always be a problem for freshmen

Got it!

I still think Pape could have been developed for the future here, with a coach who developes players but I guess he had other ideas. He has miles to go offensively, not to mention playing without fouling.

But I bet money was at least discussed and he was told to work or move on!

Because even on teams where players were starters, they are leaving in floods. It appears that the average team is now losing half or more of their players ever year! 90% of the time it is all about the money!

I dont disagree with either.. I think he couldve developed fine here as well, but if youre expecting PT increase and NIL to either increase or stay same and thats not what is being told to you after meeting with staff then its easy enough to leave. I just dont think everyone transfers because of NIL. I think the portal has made it convenient way to find a place where you can spend a year getting Playing time and "exposure" that eventually gets you more NIL the following year vs being stuck on a bench.. After all you only get 5, maybe 6, or 7 years at getting college NIL money now days, lol
