Dear Dedan;
I love you. You are a local kid. A good ball player. I’m glad you stayed home. But I expected more of a Runnin Rebel point guard. Not one who prefers to “bring” the ball up court. A few passes to see if someone can create a shot, if not, the ball goes to you to dribble till the shot clock is winding down and you try to get a shot off. Which you’re good at but it’s a bad strategy for 80% of our offense. We COULD be so much better to play a much more up tempo early offense. One of our head coaches biggest weaknesses is wanting to “ not be sped up”. Anti Runnin Rebel thought process. Dedan, it’s on you. Speed it up. Think ASSIST. Quit dribbling so much. It would make the whole team better. Now let’s go…….

I think that’s the philosophy of the offense, I hate it too. You should never have that many dribbles in the game. Dribbling in itself slows the pace dramatically. It’s hard to watch. It’s total control, it’s micromanagement …. It’s scared.

That has been a gripe of mine under past seasons with Kevin. Nine total assists against NMSU at home is unfortunate. Shooting 36% against those guys is a function of poor ball movement and a poor commitment to an offensive system. Not much has changed though...year 1 is was B-Ham as a 1-on-1 offensive wrecking ball most plays (even though he was pretty good at it) and then EJ Harkless iso like every other play (went 7-11 in conference). Last year was less of one guy pounding the ball mostly because we had no established alpha that handles the ball. This year Dedan is our undisputed alpha.

This system is great for a star player. In this case I do not believe that leads to optimal results.

IT probably the only reason he is still here. IMO! ITs about developing him and showcasing his ability. ASAP. Wont be here next year. If he went to Houston he would not get much exposure when 4 other guys can hoop also. Thomas is a very good player. Especially only being in his 2nd year.
