I don't like how things have gone down and there's a HUGE part of me that doesn't give a crap if the decisions being made end up working out. WTF is the purpose of an AD anyway?
Regardless...
Several games ago, it became clear to even more people around here (myself included) that it might be getting close to time to cut bait with CDR. I think most thought that Miller made the most sense. For myself, Miller was THE ONLY choice if you were going to make a move on CDR's job. If it wasn't going to be Miller then I didn't want the change at this juncture.
After the Wyoming loss it was clear to me that it was finally time to face the ugly truth and something had to be done. So if something HAD to be done then the only choice was Miller, although you might have been able to convince me for Augmon. I felt like Miller had the best chance to take what we have and maybe make it successful. Hell, he might not have had to do much and the players might've actually lived up to their lofty rankings and done his job for him...
And maybe that's why Simon is actually the better choice right now.
It's not pretty and it feels really dirty but it might actually be the smart decision.
This team still has a chance to be very successful if for no other reason than they are easily the best collection of talent in the MW. We've also seen what they can do in spurts and it's not a fluke. If they're focused they're really good. A successful run by Miller or Augmon puts the university in as difficult a position as one from CDR would have and it could put them into a position like what UNM was in with Noodles.
I don't see that risk with Simon. Regardless of the results he puts up over the next 15+ games he's not a D1 head coach candidate at the level of UNLV unless he makes a run to a Sweet 16 or Elite 8 maybe. Due to his connections to the players and incoming recruits though he's probably someone you'd want on the next staff. This isn't an audition as much as it's easy cover for Simon to be "planted" on the next staff. If he's able to keep a grip on a core of current players AND deliver on some or all of the current commits then the next staff will start off from a much better position than CDR did.
Maybe that's something that can be built on.
