Coach Odom visiting local high schools

Keep the LV guys at home first and foremost, get the guys from California area that you can and hit the 4 states region (Arkansas, Texas, Louisiana, Oklahoma) A lot of the kids in our region are under recruited due to many things like playing in small classifications (a lot of rural high schools here play with 16-20 players) and not going to recruiting camps or playing 7on7. They’d rather be hunting or fishing during the summer. If BO can get into this region to get these type of players and bring the southern brand of football out west it will be fun to watch.
This would be a new area for our recruiting for sure!

For sure. Have to sign a good high school class to build with. Can’t rely on the portal to build a team. Jake Spavital did that last year at Texas St. He didn’t sign not 1 high school kid, soly brought in transfers and it got him his walking papers. The portal is nice to fill the gaps at positions of need after spring practice is wrapped up. Build and develop with high school kids who stays the course and knows the system rather than a portal guy that comes in late and is unfamiliar with the system for the first half of the year.

This was a critical first move by Odom and it looks like he is on the right track. We have all heard the mantra keep the Vegas kids home before but it looks like Odom believes in it. The transfer portal is next I hope, I’m really curious to see who his type of players are!
Give me them angry, smart, nasty defensive players....I would be happy. The damn scores can be 6-5 for all I care as long as we win and win it hard with defense.

Portal should be used next year, you can blend in HS with that but there are many guys in the portal with a year of playing time under their belts with multiple years of eligibility remaining, we need more than a few transfers to fill immediately on the OL, DL, LB and CB. We ain’t getting impact high schoolers just yet!

It’s certainly the thing to do in year 1. Playbook, routine, everything is new to everyone. Depth is very important

Anyone remember John Ford?
Yea..I never saw him play but when I worked for the state, a coworker’s son went to foothill.

Ford bullied him.

If he can’t qualify at freakin UNLV…sigh.

I never saw the guy play with my own eyes..

This is a very good set of first steps in the Vegas football community. Vegas at this point is a metropolitan are pushing 3 million and still growing at more than 2% a year. As far as metro areas go that puts Vegas in the top 20 in the US. There's not enough talent here to win national championships, but there's more than enough to help sustain a MWC title contender. The top programs are still going to come in and take the top 5%, but if you can start getting those 3 star kids and developmental 2 star kids willing to preferred walk on you can do a lot of good for your program.

The next thing I'd like to see is running several off-season camps/mini-camps where you give a nice discount to local kids. You don't recruit there per se, but you can really impart your SEC pedigree and show off our facilities.

Yes, we'll still need to recruit in California and many other areas, but you can build a base from the local talent pool and that leaves you a lot of $$$ to spend recruiting outside the valley in the budget.

It appears to be part of his strategy and not just lip service so far. I'm here for coaches who are honest and direct and are looking to build inroads into the local HS and booster/support areas.
