Chances of Zimmerman Returning

Disclosure: I have no insider knowledge. Just wanted to see what other people think and for that I will offer 2 cents AKA my opinion.

I think that Zimm will return this year. Why, he truly loves this team and the Rebels. He grew up here and wants to leave his imprint on the program. I don't think he will take any unnecessary risks. Here's the deal, we have to win the tournament to go dancing. So, would you rather Zimm come back early and risk an injury or not being a 100% or have him play like a possessed man during the MWC tourney. I took a little liberty with the possessed man. The games just previous to his injury, he was playing great. If he plays that way in the tournament then we could be unstoppable.

The upside on waiting is high. The upside of us winning the next couple of games...we get a slightly better seed. We will need him Friday and Saturday of the Tourney. We can win Wednesday without him, possibly Thursday. After that we are toast without him.

I lay the line at 80% that he returns and suits up as a Rebel. That percentage is lower for early games and increases as we move on. Zimm cannot sit there and watch his team leave it all on the court when they so desperately need him. If he can get out there, he will. I have faith in him and I believe he believes in his brothers and the effort they are putting forth.

That being said, I want the other teams to be just as shocked as I will be when he shows up and drops a double double on San Diego.

He's not ready but he has potential. The nba loves potential now days. Good way to ruin a college team but that is how the market is in 2016.

It comes down to what feedback he is getting. I have seen mock drafts with him going as high as 12 as low as 24.

If he is all but guaranteed to go in the first round, I think he jumps and I don't blame him.

I think he suits up for the MW tournament. And frankly, there is no reason to play him until the tourney.

It's hard to get emotionally vested in a program with so many one and done players coming out of it. Especially with hardly anything done to show for it from these players. At least in football if players are gone as juniors they really are stars or really showed that they really had an impact to the team. Boyd the kid from basic high school comes to mind if he even elects to come out early!

anyone returning to the team fully depends on the hire.

Zimm has other influences, but i'm guessing he's got one foot out the door and the other on a banana peel.

I think it all comes down to the NBA draft. If it looks like he is going to be a guaranteed first-round draft pick, I think he goes--who wouldn't!? I think most of us would take the guaranteed $$$'s any day. Although, if there's any doubt of his draft chances, I think it will come down to the new coach. If it's somebody that he thinks highly of and would like to play for, I think he might just come back.

I think Zimm comes back for the MW tourny. Shouldn't come back before then. Hopefully Morgan comes back for the SDSU game. Need one big or will be a very long game. Not sure why Simon didn't take a couple football players for Boise game? Play 7 or 8 minutes to give jones a breather and bang up on their bigs a little. Rebs where worn down.

If he goes to the NBA this year, it helps recruiting so let those chips fall where they may. It's all about the coaching hire, questions about who stays or goes are pointless until we get a coach.

OK. I was really talking about Zimm returning THIS year. I think that he will return for the tourney THIS year in March 2016. There is no reason to return sooner. I think we can handle Wyoming and San Diego at home would be difficult with Zimm, so I would rather he be healthy for the tourney.

In regards to him returning to play NEXT year...I have doubts, and if he gets guranteed 2 commas, the man should get paid.

I also think that Simon et al will play it close to their chest and Zimm will be a surprise during the tourney. Zimm might not even play the first game, just might suit up and watch. I'm just thinking strategy.

Pretty much exactly what I am thinking. There is no upside to him returning before the tourney this year. Let him heal and lets see if we can make a run and get an unlikely berth in the dance.

If it is up to him he will play whenever he is asked to. The kid is a gamer and gives it his all.

As far as whether he will be back next year, I doubt it. He will be drafted in the first round so he will prob go. The only way I see that changing is if he gets feedback telling him he is a late first rounder and he decides waiting a year to become a lottery pick will be worth the investment.

I am not sure what the difference in pay is for a lottery pick vs a late first rounder. If it's huge then he might be back, if it is not, he will leave.

About 3 million per year on a sliding scale. 1st pick I think is 4 mil per and it goes up a certain percentage each year, until rookie contract is over. (Not sure if rookie deals are 3 or 4 years in length)

Last pick in first round starts at just under a million.

So we are talking potentially $15 mil over the course of 4 years? That is a pretty damn big difference. More likely we are talking about the difference between the 15th and 25th picks so that won't be as big of a deal.

I still expect him to be in the NBA next year.

Wouldn't it be a great story to end the year on a good note after this roller coaster of a season.

Zimm and Morgan suit up for the MWC Tourney. We run the table on 4 games earning a berth into the NCAA's on the back of Zimm's MVP performance. We then steal a game or two in the NCAA's putting a bigger spotlight on the program and current players allowing us to hire a big name coach in the off season. Meanwhile Zimm's post season performance vaults him into the Top 10 picks in the NBA draft. The combination of wins, new coaching hire and Top 10 draft pick allows us to keep our team and new recruiting class together ready to challenge the MWC and NCAA again next year......

Well a guy can dream can't he?????

Agreed. To be honest, falling later in the first round might be the best thing to happen to Zimm. The later he goes in the first round the better the team is selecting him. In that scenario there would be less rush to play him right away. I think everybody here agrees, as talented as Zimm is, he is still probably a couple years away from being 'NBA ready'.

I always have a dream scanarion on my mind during and Rebel season. This is currently mine.

I am also waiting for publishers clearinghouse to knock on my door and the wheels to line up on megabucks.

Ditto on the Dream Scenario. I am not waiting on Publishers Clearing house and I am not waiting on Megabucks. I am waiting on Powerball. I can't even remember what it was up to, but the dreams I had for those couple of days was euphoric.

I bet the Rebels have a better chance to go dancing than I have to win Powerball.

Better yet, we beat SDSU in the MWC tournament on a last second heave by Dwayne Morgan that bounces not once, not twice, but FIVE times on the rim before falling through. As the MWC is down this year only one team gets in, UNLV. That would be epic.

And a run through the NCAA's all the way to the final 4 on the back of Austin Star's historic 3 point shooting prowess, averaging 27 pts per game on 66% 3 pt field goal attempts.

1. I wouldn't be surprised if he transfers. Freshman season has been a rollercoaster for him and the team.
2. He should come back if he doesn't transfer. With his injury taking him off the court, he's not on anyone's radar and can use the extra playing time to show his skills
3. This will be a strong draft class. There are bigs and power forwards that look a lot more advanced than he does at this point. He's got a good outside shot, but needs to develop more and gain a few pounds. In a very weak MWC this season, he needed to completely dominate his position to get noticed and he's done well but not taken the reins every game.

That would give me a heart attack
