Easiest way to win the MWC & compete in the playoffs is with a defense that can hang with P-4 teams. No doubt he can put together an offense easy enough that can score 28+ per game.

Agree. He also spent the last few years watching the recipe for success of P4 teams playing the the CFP and having a dominating defense and an offense that scores and takes advantage from that defense.
Or perhaps he's not settling for players that don't meet his expectations.
100% right. No matter the scheme or coach, name of the game is to score more points than you give up. If they score nothing, you just need to win by a field goal, or a safety.
2000 Ravens and 2015 Broncos, Those were defenses that won championships!
If we are concentrating on defense, I think this was in fact the “home run” hire!

Best I can recall. They were straight nasty.
Buddy did it up pretty decently in Philly as well with the same defense.
Even Sweetness came to talked with our boys in their lock room. The Great Walter Payton came to give a pep talks with the Runnin' Rebels in the locker room.

Apparently Alex Orji visited recently. Seems a little odd we are on his list considering we have Colandrea. Also, not a good passer at all. And I can’t imagine he’d be seeking a backup role.
Colandrea’s passing ability is significantly better in my opinion. A little wild yes, but he has an arm. Orji was brought in on plays for the run. Just thought it was interesting that he’d be considering somewhere that has competition instead of a situation where offense style matches better and he gets to be the guy coming in. He is another Hajj/Sluka type. Wouldn’t be mad about having him as QB2 though. Just doesn’t make sense in my mind why that would even be in the cards.
Houston hasn't had much of a passing game the past couple of seasons, so who really knows what this guy can do.
Kinda had to start from scratch, the tight ends that we had last year all graduated or dipped out to Purdue
Cain was Similar to Aaron Straiten, big build up and an even bigger disappointment!
Maybe the TE’s actually get used in Mullen’s offense!
