CDM Era: Transfer Portal and Recruits Thread

Where did I say “pure” triple option? The Go-Go is a triple option run attack ran out of the shot gun. I
It’s all over the net:

Core principles of the Go-Go Offense

The option
At its heart, the Go-Go Offense is first and foremost built around the triple option. As a former wide receiver though, Marion wanted to retain a little more balance. “Really I wanted to run triple option but I didn’t want to lose any cool pass plays”.
Where the Go-Go differs from the traditional triple option is that their standard formations have the quarterback working from shotgun, rather than under center.
Basically right here. I don't think the Go-Go is "built around the triple option". I think it is a spread/read option that often, not always, incorporates a third option with it's runs. Most run plays have very little triple option built in, but most of the run plays have at least a read option look.
A real triple option is built off the dive. We had no such thing. The reads come more personnel and pre snap looks, not what the end does after the snap like a read option.
Shotgun? Sure. But again besides I'm some of the off balanced looks, again it it is more similar to a tradional spread option than what most people think about a triple option.
I think our offense was limited because we struggld to establish the inside run. Any type of option attack, read or triple, is predicated on establishing a threat for the inside run. We did better at end of games, but by in large, our run game was heavily built around thr QBs scrambling or running to the outside.

Where the Go-Go differs from the traditional triple option is that their standard formations have the quarterback working from shotgun, rather than under center. They then have freedom to change up the positioning of the running backs.
Contrary to what you might think, Marion is adamant that teams do not require a mobile quarterback to run the option. UNLV’s starting quarterback in 2023 was Jayden Maiava, who ran a 5.24 40-yard dash coming out of high school. Marion says that simply the threat of the option is enough to create favourable situations for the offense.
One of the ways that the Go-Go really likes to attack offenses with the triple option is using the sidecar formation. This has the quarterback lined up in shotgun, with both backs lined up to the same side. You can see just how effective it is in the cutup below.

Yes the run game has elements of the option. It also has zone read elements. It has some zone blocking elements.

You might want to read further down where it clearly states 'Marion is adamant the offense does not require mobile QBs to run the option'

So saying he didn't fit the offense simply doesn't hold any water. Maiava is hardly fleet of foot or mobile. Yet he was able to run the offense.

Freshman Maiava was given the nod over the more experienced Friel. Then Friel was recruited over not once but twice the following year with Sluka and Hajj.

There is more evidence of Friel simply not being the guy than there is of him being held back by this offense or any other he's played in. (Brumfield/Justin Rogers/Harrison Bailey Arroyo's offense).

I like having Friel on the team. As a backup. If he’s starting for Mullen next year, I don’t think we would have a good year. Could be wrong on that, just doesn’t feel right to me though.

That's what Im saying. We brought in a two year starter at a P4 school to back up a guy that hasn't seen the field at UNLV in three years?

Maybe he's grown. Figured it or whatever, but he has one season under center as a starter years ago and was recruited over every year since. (I forgot about Harrison Bailey as well).

If he wins the job that's fine. But there isn't much tape that you can point to and say 'he's the guy that can win you a conference title'.

I think we're all saying the same thing... Cam likely isnt going to start... except I can see the guy who turned a career HS backup into a Heisman trophy candidate and NFL draft pick developing a 5th yr Senior QB like Friel into a viable spread QB and if he decides Cam is the starter, I trust his judgement on that subject more than anything else...
Heck, this thread or the other probably has an equal amount of posts where people say Colandrea isn't the answer or impressive at QB either...

I trust Mullen's evaluation on QBs.

What I do like with Friel coming back is you have a guy who does have reps. Is by all accounts a selfless teammate. It reduces the need to go out hunting for multiple QBs in the portal.

I still don't think they are done at that position and expect another guy in the portal.

Agree, I'd much rather them be able to spend NIL money on WRs and defensive studs than more backup QBs...

This is the oddest crap I've seen you guys talk about, and there have been plenty over the years. Colandrea isn't being brought in to be the backup. I'm pretty sure he'll beat out Friel. Friel's decision-making leaves a lot to be desired.
Watch your language young fella. Colandrea will back up to Friel and he is going to like it.

I absolutely believe that to be true and I bet there will be another capable quarterback brought in.

But Doug was absolutely the starter and there was zero plan to utilize Maiava, even in the spring nobody was giving Maiava a tiny chance. There was a large gap.

I don’t expect the same situation here … just bringing it up in case there’s vast underperformance or an injury ….

With Scrub and Trip here?

"Friel's decision-making leaves a lot to be desired."

Impossible to tell from what we know. Perhaps he likes the University. He has a girlfriend. He understands he'll never start anywhere and is O.K. with it. Chance to start a Masters degree that isn't available elsewhere. Has a family nearby. And on and on.

Exactly. We tend to view things on our station in life, our experience, our values … they’re assumptions that can be dead wrong. We don’t know what’s in his head, his heart, we only assume.

One thing is clear, If Friel prioritized playing time, he would have transferred years ago.
He was an Arroyo recruit added late before the season. He stuck around after being recruited over by both Arroyo and Odom. After being Freshman of the year, I am sure he had opportunities to play elsewhere. But he stayed. Which you have to respect.
From multiple interviews, it seemed like he is well respected in the locker room. The players love him. To his credit, it looks like he has slimmed down and is a bit more athletic.
I think he can run the spread, and may be more equipped to do so vs the Go Go. But you don't go out and sign Coleandra if you think that Friel is "the guy".
We all know, more than any other fan base, that you need multiple options at QB any given year. It has still been since Omar Clayton that we have had the same guy start every game.
I think we likely try to hold on to Ochoa, and get a 4th guy, weather it is another Freshman, or a transfer.
I can easily see Friel by our #2 though before we start next season though. I can also see him 3rd or 4th.

IMO if we had a TOP 3 of QBs in the MWC we would of been 1 loss MAX and playing in the CFP. Are we able to beat a TOP 10 team. UMMM no ,but the positive outcome of making it would of been monumental.

It looks like Nicholls signed with GTech. Beautiful on campus stadium with probably the ugliest co-eds I have ever seen. Nerd central. The Varsity being right there was the best part aside from the stadium.
Cal Berkley would like a word.

When I went to SC Cal played at USC. I felt bad for the coeds who go there for a college experience. SC had beautiful women. ASU, where I did a rotation for PT school, was better than SC. If I went to Cal, I’d vow a life of celibacy. I’m not joking.

That was in the early 90’s. I’m sure they’re more beautiful now (sarcasm).

I think he wanted to be closer to home. He's from Sandy Springs, which is up the road. He's spent the last 3 years away from home. Being close to the Varsity probably helps along with that Tim Horton's.

Also, he would have known Arnett, since he was at Mississippi state at the same time. I don't think that played a factor in his decision though, good or bad.

UW was pretty close to USC in terms of beautiful women. But nothing tops the Rebel girls.

Yeah I didn't realize he was from ATL area. Makes sense. Good degree.

Lol no lie, Cal says hold my beer. My son's friend and baseball teammate has had a lifelong dream of pitching for Vanderbilt. Wore their shirts all the time and everything. His coach convinced him to visit at least one or two other schools just for comparison purposes. His first school was Texas and he committed on the spot. Said it was blonde hair and blue eyes as far as the eye could see. Somebody was thinking with the wrong head

My brother went to Cal and would always tell me they had a saying, "9 out of 10 girls in California at hot and the 10th one goes to Cal."

You have a problem just because they braid their leg hair?
Nowadays, they may be packing junk.

Im certain that things are going to pick up, but would it be fair to say recruting has been a bit slow and that we've lost more than we've gained from the portal. Not looking to ruffle feathers. For all we know, there could be a shock and awe type of day here shortly.
