Carter gone

I have the highest respect for Ben. I hope he finds great success at Michigan State and returns to UNLV in the future as a leader in some capacity.

Gone to Michigan State.

I wish he wouldn't say anything and just go instead of trying to say how difficult it was for him to leave UNLV.

He had no ties to UNLV and that is OK, but don't BS us.

Couldn't read the whole thing.. Whatever, bro. Good luck. If they announce you at the T&M, you get a soft boooo from me. You ain't no Rebel. Dueces!

What makes you think he is BS'ing us?

I am not sure how anybody can be mad at this kid after reading that.

Not going to bag on the guy for leaving. It's an understandable decision if also regrettable. He would've helped us a lot more than he's going to help Michigan St. Oh well, we'll live. Next.

I told you weeks before it was announced he had asked for his release that he was looking around for a landing spot so his story about not exploring his options till late in the piece is pure bs.

So you heard he was exploring his options before and that somehow makes his statement less genuine?

He did the best thing for himself and I would have probably done the same in his place. He wants to play for a title, what's wrong with that?

He's a solid player and will contribute. I don't see him starting unless there are injuries but he'll play more than garbage minutes. Silver lining? At least he didn't go to Duke.

Why would anyone bash him? Have you ever left a job before because it was a better opportunity? Good for him. It's personal and he doesn't owe anything to this inconsiderate Rebel-Net fan base.

I think the frustration from Rebel fans is the residual of having the UNLV program saturated with players that feel no obligation to UNLV. No Ben Carter does not owe us anything, he is going on his 3rd school in his college career - good for him. I think at this point most Rebel fans would like to see the program with more stability and not so many transfers. No Ben does not owe us anything and likewise to him.

UNLV is a train wreck. From the firing of Rice mid season to the Beard fiasco. And now a coach that in reality will be another ? for a couple years.

Wish him the best.

Inconsiderate? I hope all his dreams come true. But Rebel fans don't "owe" him squat either.

Him "doing what's best for him" has the modest price of my fan support. I'm a fan of UNLV because it represents my city. He left his home town team high and dry when it needed him, regardless of any 10,000 word rambling of apologetic rationalizations and excuses.

When I've seen Wink, or Marshall at games, I give them fist bumps and bro hugs as i thank them sincerely. I don't owe the same gratitude to a player that leaves my team and city at a time he was needed most. He's just another guy doing what he (thinks) is best for HIMSELF. He can do that without my fansport.

Buh bye, Ben Carter. Get YOURS.

Very well said. I agree.

Carter seems like a nice guy but any player that plays 4 years of eligibility in three different universities seems a bit flaky. Didn't Oregon just win a PAC 12 regular season and conference championship thereby needing ladders at least twice? Didn't they play in the Elite 8? It seems like Carter could learn a valuable lesson by sticking things out.

Carter just seems to be like a lot of Rice's recruits. Guys with a ton of talent but they always had a foot out of the door. They seemed to view UNLV as a place to showcase their individual talent and not a lot of commitment to building a program. Ultimately those attitudes are what led to the firing of Rice. If they came to play for Rice they sure had a funny way of showing it. Bottom line, if those recruits played to their potential, they should have ruled the MWC and made runs in the NCAAs.

I totally agree with this. Won't actively root against him but i'm definitely not a fan of his either.

His letter rubbed me the wrong way too. Made it seem like he's a Ben Carter and a Rice guy over a UNLV guy. Whined like Rice was greatly wronged; what more could he have possibly done to deserve to be fired?

Despite his rationalizations for leaving, I won't miss him a bit.

Whether you like or hated Ben, him crying because he made a bad mistake left a good impression on me. He wanted to win badly

Hard to see him go but you guys gotta respect what he did here while he was at UNLV. Tears and a torn ACL and you guys give him a terrible send off.

Carter was one of the few players that I felt tried overall, but that is not saying a lot considering most of the team did nothing to save Rice's job except LOSE. The attitude of all of these players has shown that they are playing for the coaching staff and not UNLV. This is the type of attitude that explains why they never played as a team and never improved in any of the years that Rice was coach from the beginning to the end of the season.

I keep reading everything about how badly treated Rice was by UNLV. I agree that TKM is an idiot and should be fired, but Rice and his players did absolutely nothing to show why Rice shouldn't have been fired. I am not sure how Rice was treated badly when he couldn't even beat the bottom teams in the MWC with what was considered one of the highest rated group of recruits in the country. If UNLV had played in a top level conference, they would have been lucky to win 10 games this last season.

Where TKM screwed up was in how she handled everything in regards to the removal and replacement of Rice:

1) They should have waited until the end of the season to replace Rice, or put either Augmon or Miller in as head coach when they decided to remove Rice.

2) If they had decided that they were going to hire an outside coach, then they should have fired the entire coaching staff at the end of the season instead of keeping the assistant coaches around. All keeping the staff did was cause friction after the season ended. Letting the coaching staff continue to have contact with the players, and continue to go on recruiting trips, is stupid when you know they these coaches are going to be working towards recruitment for their future jobs. We can all see what has happend due to keeping the coaching staff around prior to a new coach being hired.

3) TKM needs to learn to keep her mouth shut during the recruiting process. All her talking about the new coaching search does is make UNLV look bad when they get turned down by coach after coach. If a coaching candidate is a douche like Beard and Cronin, you don't go onto the radio and waste your time attacking their character as TKM did. We all know they are a douche, what TKM should have done was just put it behind her and move on without making any comments about the candidates.

4) You do not recruit coaches that do not want the job. The coaching search had a look of desperation with UNLV going after any coach that would listen instead of after a coach that wanted the job. I could see what was happening, but continued to support the recruiting with the hope that we would have a better outcome than most on this site believed would happen.

5) TKM needs to stop her BS name dropping. Every time she talked to the media she would mention how all of these coaches are helping her with the search for the new head coach for UNLV basketball. If she has all of these great contacts, why is everyone turning the position down? I really don't want to listen to her read off a bunch of coaches names who are helping her with a coaching search when she couldn't even find a candidate that wanted the job.

6) At least we have a coach who actually wants the job. Good luck to Menzies, and as for TKM, I hope the same train that wrecked into UNLV basketball runs he over!

I won't bash him. He was just looking for the ladder.

I don't want to be too much of an attention hound here, but at the risk of being one, am I the only one who read his quote about looking for a ladder and thought immediately of that Prince song?

Do you guys not listen to Prince, or is it just that our minds work different?

yes to 1-5. on 6 maybe just a maiming.

#5 was awful, especially, especially, the Fisher name dropping. what an absolute idiot. as if anyone does or should care what he thinks. "yes, Tina, he's amazing and if you hire him he should be kicking our ass within 2 years."

i hate her with a passion.

the one person in all this that i feel bad for is Murphy, the husband. you know he's wishing she would've just kept the Kunzer and left the hyphen out. poor fool
