Big 12 has talked to Fresno State

Canzano had the Big 12 commissioner on his podcast. He is letting it be known that the Big 12 wants teams in all 4 time zones. I believe he is looking for a Travel partner for BYU. This would allow all Big 12 teams to play 2 games on the Westcoast.

I hope there’s no fire with this Fresno thing… if so we are already getting left behind and my hope was if the Big 12 is reaching out West, it would be us first!
Make sure you read the article and listen to the podcast. As The Big 12 commissioner said "We would like a team in all 4 time zones". They really don't want to just play at BYU then turn around and fly back. That only works for Football. The other sports will need to have another school to play on a Westcoast road trip. Remember they will have teams in West Virginia and Utah this year. They have no choice but to expand West.

The big plus for Fresno State is that have played decently year in and year out as well as the fact that they easily have the best attendance of almost any program in the county not in one of the big conferences. In 2022 they averaged just under 40K per game at home. The big negative is that they have a small TV market.

To be fair, Weve been talking with the Big 12 since like 2012. They were the ones that told us we needed a 65k seat stadium, which is why that number became the size of every proposal before Allegiant got built. It also heavily influenced the buildup of the football facilities. No one is reporting on this currently, because they've already vetted the Vegas opportunities, they just need the reason. Same thing with Pac 12 and academics. Its why we went heavily into the medical school and research facilities to get into a Tier 1 status. So while you wont find to many reports that "X conference is talking to UNLV" those talks have already occurred at various stages of time over past 10 years. Take that at what you may, but Im fairly certain our AD has already been in conversations with these leagues if and when they are looking for partners to join.

A small market similar to Provo Utah. The Big 12 has a ton of small market teams and I believe that Las Vegas is an Big upgrade. We just have to start winning.

Pretty much sums it up! I hope the Pres and AD are seriously looking at making a change with hoops sooner rather than later, like they did with Arroyo!

I think Kevin gets a third year AND I think any offers to join a better conference are more dependent on football than basketball. I also think that we could sell the (beep) out of the slot machine thing since it's so unique to Las Vegas. Hell, if we get enough hype, switch it out for a MegaBucks machine and have players actually try to win jackpots after each impact play. That would be a great NIL campaign!!!

Provo is on the SLC TV Market which is #33, the Fresno market is #55, to your point DeMoines/Ames is 71 and Waco/Temple/Bryan is 94, and who the hell knows where Amarillo/Lubbock falls? With a school like Baylor their viewing audience definitely extends beyond their market into neighboring markets like Dallas to the north and Austin to the South and probably throughout the entire state, where schools like Fresno St or Boise or UNLV wouldn't have many eyeballs on them outside of their own markets.

SLC is a fake TV market. The TV market they give to SLC include portions of Nevada, Idaho, Wyoming and all of Utah. In truth the SLC market is far smaller than the Las Vegas market when you consider much of their market is not true and includes areas that have their own TV markets. Does anyone believe people living in Idaho, Wyoming, and Nevada really have any connection to the SLC market?

Don't forget UCF and West Virginia and Cincinnati. My point is that The Big 12 has so many small markets and I feel like we fit right in.

Thats another thing that comes into play where market size isn't always a true stat UCF is in a large market, Orlando is #19 but where do they come in in their own market, without stats to back it up id say probably a pretty distant 4th to UF, FSU and Miami. Cincinnati is 34 but I bet Ohio St is a bigger draw, and then West Virgina Ill assume a small market but probably has more people watching than markets much larger.

San Jose St is in the 6th largest market, but nobody is watching their games. Which game shown in LV would have more viewers a future PAC12 Match up of UNLV vs SDSU or a Big10 Match up of SC vs some average team like Iowa, Illinois, Nebraska. The SC game will.

When it comes to byu, of course they do, those are all rural areas so not a huge population but heavily mormon.
Those are two different things. While there may be a lot of Mormons in those areas, they do not get their television out of the SLC market, the same is true of White Pine.

I always thought we should get NIL to through the casinos somehow but would they do it to help UNLV?

Phil Knight can’t get Oregon out fast enough. I’d love to hear his thoughts on Oregon playing in a conference with the likes of Boise, Fresno or UNLV…
I hope UNLV get into the Big 12 anyways.

Big 12 would be great. But Pac has something the others do not have. Many teams in the pacific time zone so your game times do not compete with the rest of the country so much. On Saturday night at 3 and 4 pm PDT there is around 5 or 6 games on and at at 7:30 PDT nothing much to compete against. Pac could be better for national exposure.

730pm starts are what Current PAC schools don’t like because it limits the national exposure 1030pm EST, 930pm Central is too late. About 77% of the US population lives in those time zones.

You are better off with no competition later and smaller potential pool of viewers than competition with everyone playing earlier. Just look at how many games are on when midwest and eastern teams play.

You think MWC or pac would even have the weak national TV package it has if the games were earlier? They would not.

Is 2023 the 30th anniversary when Tark left? Put a winning and exciting products on the floor, people stays up and watch it. 30 f*cking years!

How many of you know that one of the organisation that invested in Benny "Bugsy" Seagal's venture to open the Flamingo was the Mormon Church? LDS have been involves with Vegas from the beginning. BYU and UNLV to the Big 12 only make sense. Hope it happens...

Big 12 would be amazing. Every conference football game would be nearly sold out. ( 2/3 of the tickets to visitors) Weekend BB sold out ( 1/3 tickets to visitors) Weekday games 12,000 +.

It would be an absolute game-changer.

But, it's too good to be true. I don't believe in fairy tales.

Our new commish, Gloria Nevarez, will be talking "market value" not just "market size" when media rights negotiations heat up. How far does the popularity of - the interest in - a team extend beyond it's geographic footprint? She went through this with the WCC/Gonzaga. To a lesser extent, she has something like that with BSU, but that Fiesta Bowl luster isn't what it was and they're not as 'fun' to watch as they were when Petersen coached them. Can you imagine what Tark's program would garner today? Holy cow! Name your price!

Big-12 expansion, from what I can see, is waiting on the Pac-12 media rights contracts to conclude. The Pac-12 may be having a hard time getting the money they want. CBS and Turner pulled out this past week on Feb. 15th. The thing here is if the Pac-12 doesn't get the money for their teams that is close to what the Big-12 negotiated, which they won't, you may see the four corner schools jump ship. If that happens then the Pac-12 is doomed to become something other than the Pac-12. No chance for us to the Big-12 at that point and the Pac-12 is going to be a mess.

A truly sad situation. College football is dying.

UNLV getting into PAC12/Big12 can only help make athletics better, no? Particularly football being able to recruit better? Possibly?

It would absolutely be a game changer for UNLV. Just the money alone would be massive for the coaches, recruiting, etc, not to mention the stigma of recruiting to a power conference, instead of the MWC.

The Big 12 is getting 31.5 mill per school from the TV deal (ESPN/ FOX). If the Pac 12 gets to the same amount or bit more they will be to stay together, at least for a 5yr deal. The problem is that George came out and had said earlier that they could get 40 mill possibly 50 mill, not going to happen! He set the bar to high and now the number they get will come below that! He has to sell them that they got the same as Big 12 maybe a little more, he could get close to 40 mill if the new additions ( SDSU, SMU, UNLV, TULANE) that are being mentioned take a lesser cut (15-20 mill range). I don't think they would have any problem with that since that would be 4 to 5 times what they make now ( MW is currently about 4 mill per school). Supposedly they got offered 25 mill form Amazon, but if you add the 4 schools and have less monies to the new schools and have ESPN as well you could come close to 35-40 mill number!

Another read 02/21/2023 on what may be happening with media negotiations with who may be in and who may be out of those bidding.
