Arroyo mentioned as a possible candidate at Colorado

OT (for those of you who will tell me to take the Steelers talk to another board):

Tomlin knows defense having been DC at Minnesota.

Ben covered his offensive flaws since Tomlin took the job (my opinion). We haven't had a decent backup, let alone someone who can take over for Ben.

Those fools and idiots can make their own thread!

If there was another non-rebel sub forum I'd use it!

Tomlin was a WR at W&M and started out as a WR coach before switching to DBs. (and why we're a lot worst at drafting DBs) I always think that has a little something to do with our success at drafting WRs, but I see he more as a delegator that sort of just oversees the coaching staff. I think that relationship is a big reason why he continually hires within for coordinators.

We spent draft capital on people we figured were 'backup' quality QBs. Mason Rudolph (3rd), Josh Dobbs (4th), Landry Jones (4th), Dennis Dixon (5th), but we have never been a Green Bay type of team where you invest 1st round money and talent to let a QB groom for 3-4 years. With the hard salary cap it's really hard to replace a long-standing franchise QB. And Ben would get salty for all of them, throwing shade on his radio spot about helping the team win a super bowl now.

I like Kenny Pickett but...

This team had huge needs on the O-Line, D-Line...

Personally, think they should have addressed that this year and waited on going after a QB next year.

That's part of the problem, they never stink enough to get a top 10 pick...

Tomlin is a bit of a paradox.

Under appreciated in Pittsburgh, probably a little over appreciated outside of Pittsburgh.
We haven't spent higher than a 3rd round pick on the OL since 2012 (DeCastro and Mike Adams) (and only 1 3rd round pick (probably bust Kendrick Green). We haven't spent higher than 3rd round pick since Stephon Tuitt in 2014 on the DL (and just two 3rd round picks Javon Hargrave and DeMarvin Leal). There's only so many draft or development steals and I don't think that it's a thought process that's sustainable. And the capital we've spent recently on reaching on DB, RB, and WR has been especially frustrating. I think we were just wrong about James Washington and Claypool. I think that Najee is pretty pedestrian and MacFarland and Snell never amounted to anything worth draft picks. Of course Snell and Najee are backs that need early holes.

Tomlin is a very good coach, but I think he sometimes reflects some of the ownership's patience and conservative approach to the game. Especially with the modern sports fan, we don't want to wait for you to fire Matt Canada or Keith Butler after a few bad games. I think he is pretty consistently a top 7-8 coach every year, he's just had a really bad run in the playoffs over the last 10 years.

I like Pickett. I think his ceiling is somewhere between Alex Smith and pre ACL Carson Wentz and that's enough to win rings, but I also think his floor is pretty high--he won't be just terrible. He's seasoned and experienced and didn't require any learning time. I think you can build a team around him and he can win you some games.

Here's a fun thought experiment. Say the wheels fall off and we end up with a 2nd or 3rd pick overall. Do you like Kenny Pickett enough to pass on the much higher ceiling of Bryce Young or CJ Stroud if they're available? I'll be honest, I'm not sure that I do.

I'm not sure what high rankings but not highly acclaimed even means? What G5 school is getting showered with recruiting accolades?

Sanchez was getting credit for being a good recruiter and Arroyo has had classes ranked 30 slots higher.

We aren't going to beat every G5 for every recruit. Some players want to stay close to home. Others might see a crowded QB room and look elsewhere. In terms of facilities Fertitta complex is amazing, but we aren't the only G5 school with great facilities. CSU has excellent facilities. Wyoming has great facilities as well. Boise same thing.

The San Jose loss was bad. There's no doubt about it.

But the Rebs are sitting at 4-2. If I could see the future and told people UNLV would be 4-2 after 6 games just about everyone on here would have said 'I'll take it'..
Yep almost all would take 4-2 and although the blowout sucks would I rather be 4-2 with a blowout loss or 3-3 with 3 1-2 point losses I will take 4-2. It is just one game.

Steelers have a 25% chance at the #1 pick, 70% at top-5, and 90% at top-10 according to something on ESPN.

Just speaking for myself but I'd rather read Coronavirus posts than more posts about the Steelers.
The elections are coming up - I'm sure we will get a lot of OT talk about that just to create conversation - Then Bball season starts. Thank goodness. we have a fun team full of athletes that should be fun to watch improve and hopefully contend for a league title for once !

She’s been amazing for UNLV men’s athletics (aka money makers). She was so qualified we were lucky to have her.
She was an awful, unqualified hire, just like the AD before her.

The first box to be checked is overall ability. If you can check that box, move to box #2. If you can’t check that box, move on to next. Those two were horrible and it’s showing. Add up w’s and l’s of the top two sports with their hires …. Below .500. Lol.

Since Arroyo was mentioned as a candidate for Colorado, and Sanders is currently a candidate, maybe they take Arroyo, and UNLV gets Sanders! ;)

I heard on local sports radio, and they are usually pretty connected to anything Patriots related, that Bill O'Brien is also on Colorado's list. Maybe they take him instead of Deon. Not that he won't have a number of other P5 schools to choose from.

I think our next HC is Tom Herman. I could be wrong. And I have been wronged many times. Tom is our next coach. IMO

He did seem impressed with our facilities.

But does he work for free? Cuz he is owed another 10+ mil from Texas

looks like his firing was a straight 15.4 million with no strings. Texas has the money to throw away, they don't care.

I love to see Herman at UNLV, be home run hire to me, can UNLV get the job done?

Nobody wants to work for free and you want your contract to benefit you …

If you had a grudge … could you imagine signing with a new school for 100k for the first two years and then a balloon in the third year and 4th year for say, 3M per. The new school would be in the hook for 6M over 4Y at 1.5M per year average and the coach is screwing over his former school, if he has a grudge, for the full amount.

I’m sure there’s something to protect against that … it’s not all that ingenious …

That's what I'm not sure about. The strings.
Arroyo certainly has strings. But I can't find thr details if there are strings.
Coach O's buyout aticles that i read did not mention any strings.
Traditionally these buyouts have strings, but I guess it is a contract by contract basis.

As for that back ended contract Joe, I'm guessing there is a clause against this? Seems like an easily exploitable loophole that would have some sort of protection against it.
