OT (for those of you who will tell me to take the Steelers talk to another board):
Tomlin knows defense having been DC at Minnesota.
Ben covered his offensive flaws since Tomlin took the job (my opinion). We haven't had a decent backup, let alone someone who can take over for Ben.
If there was another non-rebel sub forum I'd use it!
Tomlin was a WR at W&M and started out as a WR coach before switching to DBs. (and why we're a lot worst at drafting DBs) I always think that has a little something to do with our success at drafting WRs, but I see he more as a delegator that sort of just oversees the coaching staff. I think that relationship is a big reason why he continually hires within for coordinators.
We spent draft capital on people we figured were 'backup' quality QBs. Mason Rudolph (3rd), Josh Dobbs (4th), Landry Jones (4th), Dennis Dixon (5th), but we have never been a Green Bay type of team where you invest 1st round money and talent to let a QB groom for 3-4 years. With the hard salary cap it's really hard to replace a long-standing franchise QB. And Ben would get salty for all of them, throwing shade on his radio spot about helping the team win a super bowl now.
I like Kenny Pickett but...
This team had huge needs on the O-Line, D-Line...
Personally, think they should have addressed that this year and waited on going after a QB next year.
That's part of the problem, they never stink enough to get a top 10 pick...
Tomlin is a bit of a paradox.
Under appreciated in Pittsburgh, probably a little over appreciated outside of Pittsburgh.
We haven't spent higher than a 3rd round pick on the OL since 2012 (DeCastro and Mike Adams) (and only 1 3rd round pick (probably bust Kendrick Green). We haven't spent higher than 3rd round pick since Stephon Tuitt in 2014 on the DL (and just two 3rd round picks Javon Hargrave and DeMarvin Leal). There's only so many draft or development steals and I don't think that it's a thought process that's sustainable. And the capital we've spent recently on reaching on DB, RB, and WR has been especially frustrating. I think we were just wrong about James Washington and Claypool. I think that Najee is pretty pedestrian and MacFarland and Snell never amounted to anything worth draft picks. Of course Snell and Najee are backs that need early holes.
Tomlin is a very good coach, but I think he sometimes reflects some of the ownership's patience and conservative approach to the game. Especially with the modern sports fan, we don't want to wait for you to fire Matt Canada or Keith Butler after a few bad games. I think he is pretty consistently a top 7-8 coach every year, he's just had a really bad run in the playoffs over the last 10 years.
I like Pickett. I think his ceiling is somewhere between Alex Smith and pre ACL Carson Wentz and that's enough to win rings, but I also think his floor is pretty high--he won't be just terrible. He's seasoned and experienced and didn't require any learning time. I think you can build a team around him and he can win you some games.
Here's a fun thought experiment. Say the wheels fall off and we end up with a 2nd or 3rd pick overall. Do you like Kenny Pickett enough to pass on the much higher ceiling of Bryce Young or CJ Stroud if they're available? I'll be honest, I'm not sure that I do.
