Just watched coach Arroyo's post-signing speech. Just watched the first-ever live signing day broadcast which was the best signing class UNLV has ever had. Just watched the Fertitta complex walk-through done by two UNLV players (it was amazing).

#1 recruiting class in the MWC. Are we now a football school? Serious question.

I think thats what DRF wants us to be... we shall see if the current staff and all the upgrades to facilities and recruiting bring wins and then the fans will follow.

Football tends to be the bread maker of most universities in terms of budget vs projected revenue. Take some of the biggest and most successful basketball programs in the country and even their sub par losing football programs pull in more cash. Not a football school, it's a football country.

Is there a Link ?

That’s the goal. No lie.

Let’s see if it works. It’s where the money and energy is going. Football.

If we have aspirations to move up to a better conference we will need football to step up...a lot.
It’s a very common belief, but it’s low on the totem pole of necessities. Somebody has to be a bottom feeder in a conference so anybody who has an actual program qualifies. It’s do you have the other stuff in place? Eyeballs, tv market, academic level, facilities, etc, etc, etc. Sure, winning helps your case, but you can be mediocre and still go into higher conference if everything else is in place. You can be pretty damn good and have none of that other stuff in place and it will stop you.

You're right, it's all about how many eyeballs do you bring. For UNLV or really most schools, football needs to be winning. Without winning we don't bring new viewers to the conference. Baylor knew this when realignment was happening. They started cheating their ass off and they started winning.

Utah was attractive to the pac12 because they delivered the whole state of Utah and expanded the conference footprint. They had to win first which they did.

Based on Reed’s basketball coaching hire, yes, we are now a football school.

Do you have a link to the complex walk-through

You don't have to be world beaters, but you cannot be an embarrassment either.

The football program in it's most recent years would be an embarrassment to power schools. In terms of play on the field and fan support. You have to at least look like you belong on the same field.

Utah got the call from being good. TCU got the call too from being good. Baylor absolutely did not want TCU in the Big 12 (they kept them out when they formed at the beginning), but TCU being the best football program in Texas around that time for a few years sure forced their hand once A&M left.

The optics and at least potential is there now. The stadium, the practice facility, etc. I do think we have to fare better on the field before we truly become an expansion candidate.

Winning, I’m telling you, not as big of a deal as you think otherwise why do we still have Boise? TCU played very well, definitely helped them escape the MWC. Utah has everything else in place, as well. Boise is too small market overall. That kills them.

I do think UNLV is in good enough shape with the other stuff, that’s why (even though most disagree) I think UNLV will have a chance to move. Winning would be a cherry on top.

Pretty much..

It's simple. TV viewers is all that matters. Winning is related because it makes TV viewers. Rutgers delivered new Jersey/ny to the big 10 as was mentioned. Also as mentioned Idaho is small so Boise doesn't have the big 10 knocking on their door. UNLV can bring the state of Nevada... But they must first win to create viewership. Notre Dame could start sucking but they still have massive numbers of fans... UNLV doesn't have that luxury

Las Vegas is a biggish Market, but UNLV sports do not command much of it these days on their TV sets.
The PAC probably feels like they already own it, but the Big 12 may feel like it is worth it to sneak in through UNLV.
However, for them to sneak through UNLV, more people need to be watching UNLV.
Having excitement for football this year is paramount. Expectations will relatively low, which is good. But being competitive in some of these tougher games, maybe stealing one or 2, could pay dividends.

We are a football school until basketball does anything in late March. Lol

Well, I guess until proven otherwise, at this point we are more of a Law school than basketball or football.
My hope is we do become a football school, because it will help every other part of our university.
