I know there were several transfer signees... but is there any news with freshman signees?

Haven't seen a peep from anyone. Today is it....

I was hoping UNLV would pick up a couple of surprise recruits, but I have seen nothing at all?
The unlvfb twitter hasn't tweeted other than a short video yesterday in over a week. Really surprising. Makes me wanna check what ASU is doing...

I imagine they are still in play with several transfers. More kids will transfer after spring ball as well. Guessing Arroyo will want to keep a few spots open for them.

Apparently they have 14 more spots open. More transfers are coming and we will have some seniors. Sounds like they’re brining older players to compete now with the last 2 big classes

Especially true given the “1 free” transfer rule. You develop a HS kid that becomes a good player and the threat of him transferring out to a P5 school (Windmon) will always be there. Get kids to transfer to you and they become more stable building blocks given that they wouldn’t be able to transfer without sitting out until they graduate. Especially kids like Bailey and White that have so much eligibility left.

But the next time they can enroll is for the summer session on May 16th. They would miss spring ball. I guess it would work in that they could be working out over the summer and start in the Fall, but I can't believe that was the plan. IMO, he whiffed on at least 8-10 recruits.

Possible...

I'll have to look, there's a website that lists all the available players in the portal. There were still quite a few...

Most likely, but the point I'm trying to make is even if they are available in the portal they can't enroll. It's too late. The last date for enrollment in this term ( Spring 22) was @ a week ago. The next is in the spring - after spring ball.

This right here you nailed!!! I believe this will have to be the game plan for a coach at a school like UNLV year in and out moving forward. Try to get about 12-16 HS guys to have building blocks/depth and finish out the cycle with about 9-12 transfers with a mix of them being immediate contributors/building blocks.

I just don’t see any way possible to feel out your roster with majority HS recruits for non power 5 schools unless you’re a established brand like a Cincy, Boise, UCF type that has a track record of success and also getting guys to the next level.

Correct.

In the past we would see a couple late qualifiers or late signees..

I think going forward we will see more.

Whether this is the right approach or not...

Don't know...

The recruiting game has changed and I think coaches everywhere are still trying to figure out the best approach..

You are right about that however it doesn’t necessarily mean he swung and missed on a ton of guys, transferring isn’t as cut and dry as committing out of HS can be, there are a lot of variables that have to align in some cases. There’s cases where a recruit has to finish out a semester at a school to get enough transferable credits.

Now I’m not saying he didn’t miss on guys because having 14 open spots is quite a bit but I don’t expect us to have anywhere near that amount of open spots this summer.

I am curious if the lower level players from UNLV, that are in the transfer portal, will be able to come back to UNLV if they are not picked up from another school?

Wait, UNLV still have 14 more open spots for summer signing? 14>??

You can now sign up to 32 in a class to account for portal transfers..
Bull, do you think UNLV was that far off from being bowl eligible this past season? QB, WR, OL, RB, DB need addressing. UNLV's QB and WR positions are addressed with a pocket full of spades.
Things are so dynamic. WE lost our OC, which is huge. We'll see

They played a lot of close games. Probably should/could have stole one or two more.

So no I don't think they were a bowl team. Still too many holes.

This year...

I don't know...

Need to see what goes on in Spring/Fall to make any prediction.

Do you believe in momentum, Bull? I do. That EWU game could have set the Rebs on a different path. San Jose, Fresno, USU, UTSA and even SDSU games could have gone better..what could have been.

I do...

But I'm still not sure that makes up for how poor the Oline play was for large stretches of the season..
Curious to see where these 2 OL transfers fit in the mix. I'm hoping they're hogs that are going to come in and start day 1, but who knows? I haven't really checked to see what we're losing off of the current O Line either, so I'm just shootin' in the dark here. :p

Our offense was as bad as it has been in a while last year imo. Chuck was the obvious bright spot. Without him, and with a possibility of having good QB play (I liked friel and brumfield last year but both were often injured) and hopefully available WR depth, losing the OC may not be as significant as usual. We were bound to look substantially different. Chuck had almost 250 carries. Won't be anybody close to that in '22.

Herm Edwards hire away our OC and made him their OC. Two former NFL coaches on that coaching staff at ASU.

Really not trying to be difficult, but im not sure what that has to do with my post. If anything I think its a bad look for Herm. Lazy hire. Unlv was 119 in total offense in 2021. Even with qb carousel in '21, no reason ASU couldn't have found someone better for that gig.

Anyway my point was just that UNLV probably won't be as bad off in this situation as a team normally is losing their OC just before spring ball starts. Maybe good given how much different our personnel will be.

I think considering all the QB turnover, poor Oline play, inconsistent WR play, he got a lot out of a true freshman QB.

Also had stops at Baylor and I think Temple before that.

I'm not so sure it was a lazy hire by ASU..

Also they got a first hand look at his offense last season and considering how undermanned we were, the offense was playing pretty well until Doug went down.

I'm not sure our numbers tell the whole story.

You're right, wasn't great. But quite a few factors involved as well.

Id be stunned to find out that he was the best they could do. Really begs the question "how far down will we have to dig to replace him?"

Maybe the last bit I quoted is the key. As many question marks as we had in 2021, to somehow still sorta pass the eye test means something. But it also means something that only New Mexico looked less competent than us. I think more than anything its indicative of how awful we had been previously under Arroyo. Sanchez (Cotton OC) teams were able to finish top 50 once and top 60 once in total offense.

Again, I understand numbers aren't the whole story. But it isn't nothing.

Oh I agree Cotton's offenses were pretty solid and I remember nothing but complaints about him on here.

Considering the crap storm surrounding ASU right now, I'm not sure it's on the top of a lot of coaches preferred destinations...

I’d be interested to find out the pay difference right now. Surely they are paying above and beyond given their situation.

Absolutely. And your post below probably more than covers the difference. Gotta assume he's making a really solid financial gain. Not that it isn't a huge jump from UNLV to ASU, it absolutely is. But they are maybe the most "hot mess" p5 school right there not in the SEC (those are probably all less severe actually... but its sec so they get the attention)

Dont you realise the fallacy of your post, Loco? P5 team in trouble with NCAA. NO, seriously? Do you realise the fallacies? Look at UNC and their academics scandal, Penn State coach raping kids, LSU and Arizona ****ing blantantingly offer money...now the NIL. Seriously???? The NCAA is on its last leg.

Arizona offered $10,000 per month to Ayton. What's their penalty?
