The announcer just said that what he likes about McCoy is that he has the ability to guard multiple positions!

Will be a VERY interesting off-season for McCoy. No way he is a first-rounder. Might not even be a second rounder...his lack of toughness is going to give NBA teams great pause.

If you are Coach Menzies, do you re-recruit him thinking you can shore up his lack of toughness, lack of intensity, and teach him defense, or do you tell him he would be better off at another school?

Damn good question....

If McCoy decides to stay a second year, MM would be ecstatic to have him back. Brandon's game has a lot to offer and has plenty of room for improvement.

I am not a GM of an NBA team, but I would certainly be concerned about McCoy's defensive abilities and his intensity. The machinations that go on behind the scenes with respect to decisions to stay or go are way over my pay level, so I will sit back and watch this play out.

If we want to get better he has to go! No way u can "COACH HIM UP" in less than a year. We r so far behind defensively and he just adds to the problem 5x

I am curios to know why you think he can't improve and can't be "coached up"? I feel like he responds to MM and that with the off season they could put in some real work.

I don't agree that we get better without him. I feel that we get better with him having a year under his belt, our team using him and Juice as the first go to and then kick it out and pass to open lane cutters.

His defensive and mental toughness late in games or when teams go on runs definitely need to improve, but those are two things that can be "coached up", worked on and improved. You can't coach height, but you can coach the other aspects of his game for sure. Brandon is a well-rounded young talent that still has a lot to prove and he will do that if he stays.

I sure hope he stays one more year for us and for him.

There someone better lurking at center for UNLV? Not sure what the hell happened the 2nd half of the season (again!), but I would be happy to have him back.If he doesn't go NBA, he has his work cut out for him. Even given his defense, he has the ability to put up a double double night in and night out. Kind of wish Augmon was still around to work with him. And defensive issues weren't only with McCoy that I saw.

Still a freshman, with a lot of potential.

Now, scholarship availability, that could be an issue isn't it?

I find this conversation stunning. You’ve got 7-foot 19-year old, with the ability to post double-doubles night-in and night-out, with a great deal to learn about defense, and you want him to go to another school?

I think you’re letting your disappointment cloud your logic. Let me reiterate, he’s 19. He’s very young. He’s shown a penchant for wanting to be coached. He wants to get better. He’s nowhere near his ceiling as a player.

Coach Menzies has proven, throughout his career that he can work, successfully with big men. Just look at Diong. He’s improved by leaps and bounds in a few short months. Give him a chance to work with Brandon. I believe he could turn him into a quality 4- or 5-man.

McCoy already possesses some offensive skills that are rare among tall players. He can catch the ball. He can finish. He can run the floor, albeit with shortcomings in stamina, but that’s a fixable area. All of his weak spots can be overcome. His mother has obviously instilled a work-ethic in him, which puts him ahead of many other big men.

I have no idea whether he might return for a sophomore season. I dearly hope that he chooses to do so. No offense intended but suggesting that he should take his talents elsewhere is crazy. He’s a gem. A rough-around-the-edges gem, to be sure, but still an extremely talented young man.

Please come back Brandon. Most of us will welcome you with open arms. With another season under your belt, you’ll be better, and the league will pay the price.

Go Rebels!

If McCoy decides to stay, that would be a huge deal for UNLV next season. If he gets the intel that he is going to be drafted, particularly in the first round, I wouldn't hold it against him if he decided to go. Even if he decides the G-League or Europe is the better route for him, I'd have no problem with it. His life, his decision. If he wants to stay in college, it would be beyond ridiculous to tell a kid who just averaged a double-double and has probably only scratched the surface of his potential that he should look for another school.

Its not like he doesn't have the skills to improve or defend. Whether it is a stamina issue or a desire issue, we've seen him be very effective on the defensive end for stretches of time. Those stretches haven't been anywhere near long enough, but we've seen it.

Menzies does have a history of working well with big men, so I'd have to believe that there would be at least some improvement over the off-season, if not a substantial improvement. Not to mention most coaches will tell you that the biggest improvement in players generally occurs from Freshman year to Sophomore year. Unfortunately there hasn't been many talented players sticking around for year 2 lately.

Now... if he does come back... and we see the same recurring issues of lack of effort, focus, stamina, etc... that have disappointed us all this season, I'd see that as a pretty big indictment of McCoy's work ethic and Menzies' ability to succeed as the coach here. In reality, if McCoy returns, it probably puts more pressure on Menzies to have a much better year next year.

Nope. Logic not clouded.

He had a great game today against the Wolfpack. Is that the McCoy we get next year if he returns? That's the question you ask yourself if your Menzies.

Who in their right mind would pass on welcoming back a 7-footer who almost scores at will down low and grabs 10 rebounds a games because of possible motivational and defensive issues? We can work on those deficiencies! C'mon guys, he's no Beas Hamga or Emmanuel Adeife. Those guys were head cases and lost causes. Brandon is a future NBAer with a good head on his shoulders! I'd LOVE it if he came back.
