On UNLV to the Big 12. IMO UNLV’s wins on the road at Houston and Kansas and finishing ranked 23rd in the county has opened up some eyes on a Big 12 invite down the road.

Wow, those teams are incredible in the Big 12.

I can dream right?

We are moving in the right direction with football and basketball (both men's and women's). And, that is a great commitment from UNLV. However, the new game in town will be revenue sharing. The B12 schools are committed to it. We have to do the same. As a G5 school if we want the B12 to take us then we have to show we are serious about it. Memphis is going to do it and we need to make the same level of commitment as soon as we can. I'm not talking about waiting for 2029 or 2030 we need to get there sooner. We need to put up or shut up.

I think so much depends on these lawsuits and how much cash UNLV will get, especially up front.
If UNLV is expecting a B12 invite within the next few years and we get cash up front, it will help subsidize what likely be a reduced initial share in the conference. That share likely still much more than we would get in the MW and likely the PAC, but we would be at a disadvantage to the rest of the B12.
If the poaching fees are cut in half or worse thrown out, getting into the PAC is the smart move. I still believe the break even point from leaving vs staying in terms of up front losses could be 0-3 years, and then it is a notable pay bump from then out.
If UNLV doesn't think it will get the call until maybe 2029 or later? Really not worth staying even if we get near the lump sum promised.

This is the man responsible for Dan Mullen taking the UNLV job. Also, he is a UNLV alum and on the board of the UNLV football foundation. He is also one of the most powerful execs at ESPN as the Chairman for all 17 of ESPN bowl games. Further, it just so happens the ESPN has the TV contract with the Big 12. I would anticipate he will have input on any Big 12 expansion. Half way through the video he discusses the Mullins hire:

He helped an ESPN employee get hired for football. Then UNLV hired… another ESPN employee for basketball.

There are so many teams the big 12 would take before us.
Amongst the g6, I believe we are second or third. Unfortunately SDSU would be in our way. But they have already told them no before.

They didn't want to take a half share. I get the reasoning. Something about half bowls of soup. But they lost their seat when the Arizona teams became available.

I think the light is dimming on SDSU, attendance falling with no football success the last few years. Another up year for us and down year for them and I think we are ahead.

Still feels unlikely.

That said if nothing else an actual effort and commitment was made to at least put us in the conversation, and as a fan it's all you can ask.
Nope, it’s not all I can ask. UNLV needs to be in the Big 12 ASAP. It would be so good to see Allegiant and the Mack packed when the big dogs come to town. UNLV VS KANSAS would fill the Mack.

It helps that the Big12 president (whose contract was just extended 2 days ago) went on the record to say that he wanted to do more Vegas events.

1. “I’m confident at the right time we will have a formal affiliation with the Las Vegas Bowl,” he said. “This market is critically important. (Big 12 vice president and commissioner of football) Scott Draper is working on that. I’m very comfortable and confident in what that outcome will will bring for our conference. We need to be here in Vegas for all the right reasons. I said it earlier, entertainment and sports capital of the world, so critically important market for us in the future."

2. “The Big 12 lives at the intersection of sports and entertainment – as the Entertainment Capital of the World, Las Vegas is an ideal location to kick off the 2024 season. We are grateful to the Las Vegas Raiders and the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority for their partnership and support.”

In my opinion it would behoove the Raiders to continue to support UNLV. Its about time for the LVCVA to get onboard too.

At some point when the Power 2 (BIG/SEC) expands again they will take schools from the ACC and Big12, when that happens the Big12 will need MWC/PAC schools to be able to maintain staus as a Next 2 conference although the gap from the Power 2 to the Next 2 will be even bigger than it currently is. At that point will it be the Big12 or the PAC that takes control?

JS is good people. Really quite proud of what he has managed to accomplish from when we were just low level local Ad/PR/Marketing guys.

Fortunately for UNLV their football team is currently a mile in front of SDSU and pulling away! What other school would currently be in front of UNLV?

I don't know if we are ahead, but if we aren't, then its definitely close. They still have a larger market, but they're losing a lot of market penetration.

Group Of Five To Power Four College Football Conference Realignment: Ranking G5 Teams Most Worthy To Move On

In the wake of drastic, compelling, and sometimes confusing college football conference realignment, some Group of Five teams appear to be in a good position to move on to Power Four leagues.
As the power conferences continue to expand, G5 teams might be a part of those efforts. For example, Mountain West teams Boise State, Fresno State, Colorado State, Utah State, and San Diego State are going to the Pac-12 beginning in 2026. Whether that new-look league will be considered a “power” conference is up for debate.
Regardless, here’s a ranking of the Group of Five programs which are most worthy to transition to a power conference. All of these teams on this list recently made a recommitment to their current league. But that doesn’t mean they’re still not deserving of consideration for a power conference spot.

Group of Five Teams Most Likely To Join Conference Realignment, Ranked

RankTeam
1UNLV
2Memphis
3South Florida
4Tulane
5UTSA

5. UTSA

Geography alone makes the Roadrunners a logical addition for any conference. UTSA is obviously located in San Antonio, Texas, and having a team in that media market for any league would be a smart move.
UTSA has been pretty good at football the past five years, making a bowl game every season since 2020. The Roadrunners went 7-6 after winning the Myrtle Beach Bowl in 2024, they won the Conference USA title their last season in that league in 2022, and they were one of the better squads in the AAC a season ago.
That recent move between conferences could complicate things. The Roadrunners would certainly have to be sure making another move in the immediate future would be worth the risk.

4. Tulane

There’s no doubt Tulane has had the talent to compete in a power conference over the past decade. The Green Wave have endured just one losing season since 2017, and they have appeared in the last three AAC Championships.
Look no further than Tulane’s win over USC in the Cotton Bowl during the 2022 season to see what the program can do against top-notch competition. Even as recently as this season, in Jon Sumrall’s first year as the Green Wave’s head coach, they played two teams in the AP Top 25 during the regular season and kept those contests to within two possessions.
And since the university is located in New Orleans, it’s positioned well in a good media market compared to many other Group of Five teams.

3. South Florida

South Florida is a school which many wouldn’t immediately think of as a Power Four-worthy team. But there would be some benefits for leagues like the ACC or Big 12 (now that UCF left the AAC for the Big 12) to add the Bulls.
USF hasn’t been extremely successful recently, though it did give Alabama some issues the past couple years and went 7-6 overall each of the past two seasons. But because of those previous struggles, the energy around the program hasn’t been great.
A power conference move would help with that. In Tampa, USF is part of a substantial market. The team also plays in Raymond James Stadium, home of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, so it has the capacity for a move up.

2. Memphis

Memphis has won a fair number of games the past few years. The Tigers put together a good season in 2023 by going 10-3 overall after beating Iowa State in the Liberty Bowl. In 2024, they were 11-2 overall and ended the season with a victory over West Virginia in the Frisco Bowl. Maybe this all could help springboard them into Power Four consideration.
Memphis has much more going for it as well, including being a good basketball school. The football program was seventh among G5 teams in terms of total revenue in 2022 and is in a good spot geographically as well. Of the teams in the AAC, I think Memphis is the most likely to make a move.

1. UNLV

Yes, UNLV hasn’t exactly thrived on the football field in the past decade. However, the team went 9-5 overall in 2023 after losing to Boise State in the Mountain West Championship and to Kansas in the Guaranteed Rate Bowl. The Rebels defeated two Big 12 teams, reached the Mountain West Championship again, and beat Cal in the LA Bowl en route to going 11-3 overall in 2024. Plus, wins are not all conferences consider when thinking of teams to add.
Pro sports leagues have moved or expanded to Las Vegas because it’s a good market. The Rebels were also sixth among Group of Five teams in total revenue in 2022 and play at Allegiant Stadium, home of the Las Vegas Raiders, so they are in a good position to make a power-conference transition.

The P4 move to the Big 12 is now out their being mentioned by more than a few of us here on rebelnet, the momentum is building and it is on us to keep the pressure on by winning.

I am so glad we have Mullen and Pastner here now because we are in good hands, with these head coaches running the 2 biggest programs.

I would love to see the Rebels playing in Boulder sometime soon!

They are not losing it, they have never had market penetration in San Diego, and now they have a stadium that would never get them into the Big12. In order to even be considered for the Big12, they would need to have a stadium that seats 45K plus, and that would take 3-5 years to get approved and built. The Big12 is not going to take SDSU based on the future construction of a new stadium, or the future design and expansion of the existing stadium. Personally I believe SDSU is now dead in the water.

I agree on the facilities and specifically Snapdragon. 35k capacity will not cut it for a Big 12 football stadium. Last year UNLV had 40k plus for the Reno game. UNLV is turn key and has facilities for major sports football and basketball as good as any if not better than any in the Big 12. What gets overlooked with Alligiant is the fact that UNLV has their own locker rooms, offices and field. All UNLV needs to do is continue to win.

This is true. The design is advertised in several websites as being able to expand to 55,000. However, there aren't even any publicly available renderings showing it. Looking at the approval process in San Diego it would take 18 -24 months for concept approval. 6 mo. to 18 mo. for design and design approval. And 24 months for construction. I was once an advocate for an on campus Rebel stadium of this size that could be expanded. I'm pretty sure we could get the design/build faster than Cali. But not fast enough. Looks like we did good with Allegiant.

People forget one major win is that Allegiant didn't cost us a dime to build. Snapdragon was $310m. As much as the Pac likes to dump UNLV for being poverty U, we didn't take out a 30 year loan. Granted 2/3rds of it is covered by CSU- backed bonds. But that's still $100m or so that SDSU is on the hook for.

Big 12 map. UNLV will fit in very nicely geographically with BYU, UU, ASU, UA and CU.

Playing devil's advocate.

CINCY/WVU/UCF are stranded a bit. The assumption is always Memphis/Tulane and USF being in play for the ACC if they need to reload. I think the BIG 12 could look at any of those schools to lend CINCY/UCF/WVU a hand with another travel partner.
