This is stupid. The current rebel has nothing to do with the Confederacy. Reid must know that the word rebel is used to describe many groups and individuals unrelated to southern Confederates.

I actually have never felt all that "attached" to the HeyReb mascot.

If it had to go, we need to keep the Rebel name, but go a whole new direction. What are some ideas? It would be great to honor Tark with a shark. Maybe a "James Dean"-type rebel cartoon of a shark?

It is unfortunate that this has become an issue. A few days ago I thought it was going to blow over (as far as UNLV's "frontiersman" is concerned) but today this is on the verge of exploding and could be used as a negative PR tool by recruiting opponents and others bent on hurting the university.

http://m.lasvegassun.com/news/2015/jun/23/reid-says-he-didnt-urge-unlv-rethink-its-mascot/

UPDATE: Reid says he didn’t urge UNLV to rethink its mascot

No, Sen. Harry Reid is not calling on UNLV to change the name of the Runnin’ Rebels or get rid of Hey Reb! because they could be construed as a reference to the Confederacy.

In a weekly press conference on Capitol Hill, Reid was asked by a reporter how he felt about the university’s name in light of the recent uproar over the continued use of the Confederate flag by some state governments.

Reid responded, “I believe that the Board of Regents should take that up and take a look at it.”

News outlets quickly ran with the story, asserting that Reid was calling on university and higher education leaders to change it.

But Reid spokeswoman Kristen Orthman said the former Senate majority leader wasn't planning to talk about UNLV and wouldn't have said anything if he hadn't been asked.

The term Rebel is to highlight the rivalry between Northern and Southern Nevada not a tribute to the Confederacy. It's rediculous if you ask me. However, I have heard comments from individuals with some community standing that the Rebel mascot and name have prevented them from fully supporting the team.

I can't say that I haven't often thought this day would come. And if the name change/mascot/logo doesn't change any time soon, we will revisit this same topic down the road. Then again. And again. I'll potentially be long dead and if the name change/mascot/logo hasn't happened by then, the debate will continue on.

If I were to ever get a tattoo (I don't have any), I always thought UNLV. And one of the (albeit weak) reasons was the potential for name/logo/mascot change. I think it is likely to happen.

Now don't get me wrong. I get why we're the Rebels - history and all. And those that get it realize that it isn't meant to harken directly to the Confederacy - its origin stems solely from Nevada Reno. But there is a perception.

If we had to change it, I would see nothing wrong with the name Rebels. There are many kinds of Rebels (ala Star Wars), and its name harkens the spirit that UNLV was founded on. But I could live with other names too.

My heart is with the city and university, but I'm just not really married to the name, mascot, logo, etc. Besides, we share it with Mississippi State. How lame is that? And oh yeah, their mascot looks similar to ours and I'm betting at least some of you might say their could be Confederate connotations with their mascot.

BTW - My wife agrees, and I think that's an excellent idea.

If that's true then they'll find issue with another name. Or another mascot. Or this person in this position. Or that person in that position. Or their parking spot at a game. Or...

Non-issue. Headline porn.

Maybe it started as "headline porn", but it is much more than a "non-issue" now. At least two University of Nevada regents (Allison Stephens and Cedric Crear, both from districts in Las Vegas) have spoken out today about "getting rid of Reb". I haven't heard any of the other eleven regents speaking for keeping things how they are.

How about a "Shark Rebel Without A Cause" logo? Kind of like the concept below but without sucking like my quick attempt.

We would probably be the only school with a motorcycle in our logo. The gray shark would be drawn with a scarlet biker jacket. Maybe a towel instead of a cigarette.

The teams would keep the Rebels and RunninRebels names. The costumed mascot would be an improved version of the shark from the '89-'91 era.

Seriously, even after it has been posted that Harry's comments were taken out of context, we still have people thinking we should change one or the other. There is no need and no point to.

I am not going to Cow Tow to something that is a non issue. This is political correctness gone to the EXTREME. They interviewed a student today on the radio on my way to work. She said and I quote "Yeah its something.. Uhhhh... Something I never made a link to ever. Uhhhhh. Like, they should change it if that's true." REALLY? So a news guy tells you he is going to interview you about Hey Reb being tied to being a Confederate and all of a sudden you make the link? One of two things can be taken from this.
A) Our student body at UNLV is really dumb. Or
B) Agendas are being pushed.

That kid didn't shoot and kill a church base because of a damn flag. And for anyone to buy that Harry Reid really gives a crap and isn't just a senile old wind bag is asinine.

Do I believe racisim exists, YES! Do I believe that the Flag or Hey Reb are racist on their own. NO! Besides, the main argument here is whether the Flag should be displayed by the government in that state. I agree it should not. But banning Joe/Jane Schmo from believing in whatever idiotic values he/she believes in is against the values of this country. Whether you like and agree with it or not.

RANT DONE!

Terrible idea to change the name or logo or mascot. Harry Reid is an idiot let him worry about BYU and the Zoobs. This is all contrived outrage and an overreaction by weak willed people who will change their beliefs at the drop of a hat

Meet your 'new' UNLV Rebels. May the Force be with you.

Actually I like the Shark idea if it comes to it. Who cares if the concept of a rebel shark doesn't make sense?

If we get out in front of this here is the new Mascot.... Already has a good suit to match.... and Logo.... Giving homage to the old Rebel and the new Rebellion...

You have no foundation to this and he is not tied to BYU in any way possible (not to mention this has nothing to do with them-haha). Your comment belongs with the comment made by the student to the news guy.

No Reid doesn't have a tie to bywho, but he does have a tie to a couple of universities in Utah that have under 10% minorities, and likely less than 1% when he went to them. Wonder why he hasn't called them out?

The extreme and ongoing politically correct witch-hunt going on in the USA is one thing I definitely don't miss about the country. Everything bad that happens just HAS to be someone or something's fault. Why isn't it just a crazy nut... no it has to be blamed on a bigger issue. I hope UNLV never changes the name or the mascot, the whole debate is ridiculous.

Where is the option "UNLV should rig Dingy Harry's work out equipment?" He's a troll Svrew him.

LOL

Dingy Harry? Seriously? Is that because you want to call him Dirty Harry but are afraid that makes him sound too tough?

Conservative talk radio listeners crack me up.

I thought ISIS was the only one tearing down monuments and destroying everything that doesn't fit into their box.

Over this past week, I have stood corrected.......

Your enjoyment would have been better if I actually listened to conservative radio. But, a Liberal such as yourself wouldn't understand why so many Americans dislike that douche canoe.

I dislike both sides as much as the other. And quite honestly don't listen to Conservative radio nor liberal. They all suck. Harry Reid is a lame duck lap dog.

Independent of whatever Reid said, which I missed because I was out of town, I always liked the idea of James Dean tie-in, Rebel with a Cause. Then the mascot can zip around on an electric motorcycle dressed like James Dean. There is nothing inherently bad about the Rebel name since one story is that we got that monicker because we rebelled against our sister school in the north to become a free standing institution. I don't know if that story is true, but we could certainly use it to remove any connection between Rebel and the Confederacy.

Just some Saturday random thoughts.

Were there even people living in Nevada during the Civil War? (minus Indians ... lol )

Ah, not being from NV, had to look it up. I know Mormon's populated a lot of places, but guess late 1850s were less than 7k people. Jumped to 40k by 1870. So guess there were a few people.

You have no idea what my political views are because I'm not douchy enough to go spouting them on a message board, as if anyone would care. I was merely laughing at your witless nickname for a longstanding U.S. senator and the likely genesis of it.

And for the record, despite probably never getting your vote, Reid has managed to maintain support for a very long time. Choose to admit it or not but a lot of Americans (largely Democrats) seem to like the guy.

I digress, please, go on with nicknames. I'll bet you've got one for all them commie Libs, dontcha?

Wouldn't you know, turns out Rush did coin that name on his show! Quick "dingy Harry" Google search and there it is!

http://www.rushlimbaugh.com/daily/2014/09/12/the_origins_of_the_dingy_harry_nickname

Guess it turns out I was right after all- you are a Rush listener. In denial apparently. Seems you steal his lame materiel, repost it on message boards, then deny you don't listen to his show when someone makes fun of you for it.

Solid work Homer.

Nope, Don't listen to Rush. But continue... Its quite delightful to listen to someone who has it all figured out because basically, none of the rest of us obviously do.. He has never received my vote. Quite honestly, until Richard Brian retired, he was unknown anyways. I can tell you how he garnered all the hype for all those years, but you wouldn't want to have me tie him to a religion. The Mormon word is a taboo around these parts.

As a side note, you are correct that I do not know your political beliefs... I made a General guess such as you did. I called the dip stick a name. I didn't give you a dissertation about the Commie Left, or the War Mongering right because quite honestly, THEY BOTH SUCK! But please tell me more about what I know, don't know, and where I got it from.
