Will Sanchez succeed where Hauck, et al., failed?

I raise this question, because it goes deeper than who coaches the Rebel football team. I raise it, also, because I'm still stymied by how Hauck lost to the FCS opponents he would have massacred at Montana. I have this belief that it's the program, not the coach. Now, if Sanchez, with all the hoopla and backing, can change the nonexistent enthusiasm for football at UNLV, I'll be in the cheering section. But, it could be, as Hamlet said, "There's something rotten in the state of [UNLV football]."

He (Sanchez) has already surpassed not only Hauck but also Sanford in getting more excitement in the community regarding this program.

Where Hauck fell short was "selling" his vision. He answered questions when asked but never when out of his way at booster events to really grease some palms if you will.

Sanchez has already done more national press in a few months than both previous coaches combined. The new staff has also allowed the fans a glimpse into the program by embracing social media. We are now more a part of recruiting / goals/ and the program as a whole because it. (Hauck and Sanford fell very short in becoming part of the community and getting people on board).

None of this really means anything until spring ball starts in a few weeks and more importantly when we line up against NIU in Sept. So far though Sanchez appears to "get it" when it comes to selling a vision/ program to a public he is familiar with. Sanchez is well aware of the apathy toward the program from inside the university and out. Starting from the ground up he is literally changing everything from the carpeting in the offices to how we will prepare and how we will look on game day.

I would say So Far So good.

You're wrong, Buck. Sanchez failed to create excitement in the community because he failed to recruit 15 Vegas kids to the team. Can you imagine the droves of fans that would follow those local kids to UNLV and Sam Boyd Stadium? Shame on Sanchez. He's gonna fail until he realizes that the players he needs to win at UNLV are right here in the valley (after other big-time schools have taken the best-of-the-best players, of course).

You are correct the problems run deeper than just the coaches. If anything the coaches weren't the problem. The major problems lay with the lack of university and public support. The football facilities have needed an overhaul for some time now. There has been little done by the advertising department. Booster support overall has been poor. Most disappointing is the lack of season ticket holders which generate revenue. 10K season ticket holders would generate around a million dollars of revenue (currently 4K). That would go a long way in helping the financial woes of the program. That isn't to say coaching and bad luck haven't played a part in it. If Jason Thomas doesn't injure his shoulder and maintained the form he had his first year as a starter maybe things are different. If Mike Sanford hadn't put all his eggs in the Rocky Hinds basket maybe things would have been different. If Hauck was a little better at making adjustments on game day maybe things would have been different.

Fan support in football makes more of a difference than any other sport. False starts, trouble with communication etc. It plays a huge roll in football. Unlv simply does not have that.

So what we end up with in Las Vegas is, one side saying 'if they won more I would show up' and the other smaller contingent saying if you showed up maybe they would win more. Chicken and the egg.

I think Sanchez is on the right path. The wins and losses probably won't reflect it this season, but the money that is starting to be put into the program will help. This years recruiting class was pretty solid but won't really show up in full until next season. We will know which way this thing is trending by the end of year three.

I just hope people come out regardless and support the team. Nothing looks worse to potential recruits in my opinion than a half empty stadium.

There's no question that decades of neglect has put the program where it is. That's not to say the road isn't littered with flawed coaches, because it is, and there's no doubt they all would've done better given increased resources. This is where Sanchez has an advantage. He's already here, deep in the community, and he knows where and how to access the resources. He has begun the work the others, for whatever reason, weren't able or willing to do. Stay tuned. It should be very interesting to see if the giant can be awakened.

He had a short amount of time to recruit locally when ge got the job. So he cast a wide net to make sure got best kids. Look at all thr local offers he has already made for 2015 & 2016. More than I can remember ever.
