What if Hauck had managed to go 7-6 and made another bowl last season rather than 2-11? Would his job have been safe at even 6-7?

Is he still the coach?

Were plans already in the works for Sanchez to be the new head coach?

Would booster money have started to come in after a 2nd straight bowl season?

Would University have made the obvious commitment to football they have now with Sanchez or would they have figured with a 2nd winning season what they were doing was enough?

This is in no way a shot at Hauck or Sanchez or the situation surrounding the hiring or firing of each. Just curious what people think would have happened.

plans were started beginning of season. not sure how they could have followed through had he gone blowing again and no the boosters wouldnt have come rolling in,

If Hauck had produced consecutive bowl teams then I think for sure he would have been retained despite the interest in Sanchez and his supporters. It would be difficult justifying the release of a coach who just produced back-to-back bowl appearances for the first time in school history.

That said, the fact Hauck failed to make another bowl while regressing back to 2 wins (his 4th 2-win season) speaks for itself that something was indeed broken, whether it was the coach, his staff, the lack of facilities and resources, or all of the above.

Another hypothetical situation is what if Caleb Herring hadn't accomplished the minor miracle he did in leading that first come-from-behind victory when Hauck finally gave him a chance? How could have things played out differently after that season if not for Caleb Herring capitalizing on his opportunity.

I liked and supported Hauck but he just wasn't FBS head coach material. He got his shot to prove it and he failed. He couldn't coach or put a staff together that could coach (at least not until his brother and Rosenbach and even they were suspect). His in game caching and decision making was horrendous. I tried to see the positives in these decisions but so many were just plain bad. Additionally, he was the absolute worst at PR and he preferred to say as little as possible which also appeared to be a reflection of his ability to attract boosters. Furthermore, BH retaining his original crew when they were obviously not the right people was more examples of poor leadership. Once again, I like him but his wasn't right for this gig. He had the team moving in the right direction but it just wasn't enough.

I have no inside information but I don't think money was coming if BH won or even came close. The current money is flowing because these individuals have a stake (Sanchez) and influence in the program. Isn't that what some boosters want? Some level of influence, maybe control, maybe recognition.

Everyone knew BH was on a serious hot seat. Not only did he have significant losing seasons but he lost some pretty bad games. When BH lost to FCS school in consecutive seasons, the program lost fans and supporters in droves which it already was paltry. No one was going to step up and place money and what had already shown to be questionable leadership.

I think Sanchez as good as a shot as anyone. He surrounded himself with a decent staff and he knows how to drum up support in the community. This program needs to build support in the community and hopefully increase boosters and donors. My hope is the TS can get additional big boosters to continue to drive this program. This, along with the potential of a on-or-near-campus stadium might move UNLV out of the cellar.

I am very encouraged with this new land purchase agreement. I think there is a plan and much is happening behind the scenes. I think some people learned their lessons for the debacle with Majestic and subsequent mess with stadium authority board.

Who has been right for this job? I don't think HE failed, Hauck was just a part of the WHOLE. We shall see if TS is the right coach in time. He has some financial backers which will help with the much needed facilities which in turn will bring a few more wins. Right now, regardless who is the coach, UNLV needs big$$ (has always needed money) to keep up with the rest of the nation in making the facilities "state of the art" to attract more 3 star plus players, not just a few here and there. You will see coach Hauck again at the helm somewhere down the road because he is a fine coach and a very good dude.

I supported Hauck to the bitter end. As much as I don't want to say it, because I like the guy, BUT he DID fail. Sure, many before him failed too but that doesn't change the fact. I don't know BH personally but I like a lot about him. However, I also didn't like a lot about his coaching and how he didn't reach out to the community.

There is no need for me to pile on BH since he is no longer at UNLV. And maybe he'll be at the helm somewhere else. I wish him the best of success. He was a Rebel, ran a clean program and gave it his best shot.

Nonetheless, I don't think BH would have pulled in a big donor/booster such as Fertitta's. I think someone like the Fertitta's want their 'guy' whether TS or someone else. Also, had BH followed up with another winning season, he just wasn't someone who attracted money or was involved in the community enough for booster development.

I always have said UNLV Football won't be successful until people in Las Vegas make it important, get behind it and invest. Tony Sanchez is a step in the right direction because of his ties to the community and significant passion for football and building UNLV into a contender. I get the feeling that TS will not only be coaching on the field but constantly banging on doors and screaming from his soapbox to make the program into something. I also think that this may be the first coach who pushes the building of traditions and doing something different at the games to make them more attractive to fans and players alike.

Agreed. Hope Tony can pull in the money from the fellas you are talking about. If UNLV can get the facilities needed, they will have a chance to do well.

Plans were in place before the bowl season, then he went and offed up and made a bowl. A lot of the local "investment" in the program was essentially contingent on Hauck not being the coach. At 6-7 he would have been fired. 7-6 would have put the admin in a difficult position but the Pres easily could have said that Hauck wasn't "his guy" and wanted to go in another direction.

From what I heard, plans were started before the bowl season year. It was postponed because of the bowl appearance.

If hauck had went bowling he probably would have been offered a gig somewhere else and the issue would have resolved itself
