What if we rallied the big $$ boosters like Cliff Findlay to get TKM to atleast meet with George Karl? Instead of screwing around with the BOR, work behind the scenes before the contract goes to approval. Technically Menzies is not hired until the contract is approved. Anyone know Findlay or other influential boosters you could motivate to step in. TKM will listen to the people writing the checks. BTW, TKM will be on with Mitch & Pritch today at 11:30, call in and get to ask questions, make her squirm.

Findlay is the one backing Menzies lol. It won't happen. MENZIES IS THE COACH. Get over it. Move on. It sucks. But it is what it is.

By the way, if you mess with this and screw over Menzies in any way. How does that reflect on unlv? That is BEYOND small time and good luck getting any decent coach in the future. What a joke. Just drop it already.

Um.... Ok..... You say CF has that power. Let's assume it to be true. You can toss in other influential boosters if you want.

Now what if he/they backs MM and wants nothing to do with GK or anyone else?

Just saying.

It is over. To try and rally against this hire would probably do more harm than good at this point. I am resigned to the fact Marvin Menzies is our next head coach. I hope he exceeds my expectations. It shouldn't be very hard, they are quite low.

As fans we had a chance after the Dave Rice mid-season firing debacle to make a difference and chose not to do anything.

Dave had to go at seasons end if things continued the way they were. But a mid season firing is as bush league as it gets. From that moment on UNLV was viewed as toxic in the coaching community.

Calls and letters to Jessup at that time asking for Tina's resignation, followed by promises to not renew season tickets and pull RAF donations might have helped.

Instead we all pretty much sat back, myself included, and watched this Carnival of the Absurd unfold.

We all new how this would end. We heard the promises of 'a coach UNLV can be proud of' among others. We started to believe it might turn out ok. The whole time though, there was that little voice telling you this won't end well, don't get to excited. That little voice was common sense. None of us listened.

In fairness, extreme bad luck happened as well. Two specific openings when UNLV was ready close (and in one case, did close) really threw things downhill quickly.

Joe-

I used to think it was just pure blind dumb bad luck. The more I look back at it, I think coaches, saw what an absolute toxic situation we have here. I think Underwood may have left here without a contract as well, even if Oklahoma State hadn't opened.

I am sure some of it was bad luck. I do think our current state of affairs, including money and our boosters and our AD made us a lot easier to turn down.

Agreed but if we can get them to agree on atleast asking Karl be interviewed, maybe. I know I'm grasping at straws but it is worth a try.

Sorry but it is a done deal at this point. I have been pretty vocal about my displeasure with the process and the hire.

Time to support the hire as best as possible and focus attention on getting Tina removed as AD.

Then we are in same position we are now. But what if they, like Jessup, didn't know how serious Karl was about wanting the job. I have yet to find anyone who wouldn't take Karl over Menzies

Completely agree.

If you thought we look bad now, what happens if this poor guy's contract is voted down?

Even if in a perfect world it works out and Karl comes here, are reputation would fall even farther.

People think it can't get much worse but it can.

What are the chances GK would take the job after UNLV publicly announced MM as their coach and then the BOR purposefully delays the vote to talk to GK? There is no way GK will poach a job like UNLV from any college coach. Not going to happen. In fact, I would expect it would sour him on the university because who would want to do business with people like that.

Nonsense. Way dirtier business than that takes place in the NBA on the regular.

This isn't the NBA and the scenario you suggest has never happened. But I guess you still feel he was still interested after he made a few phone calls.

You're right, it's college...and college athletics is one filthy business!
If the Beard fiasco didn't put Karl off I doubt anything that happened after would. He was/is interested but the two morons in charge were too panic stricken to hear anything other than someone, anyone saying YES on the spot.

Why would this make us look bad? Because we don't want to accept mediocrity!? I think it looks way worse if we just accept Menzies--it's like we've thrown in the towel and accepted our place as pushovers. If other people had this same mentality, we would be ruled by the British right now, or the Japs or Nazis would have taken over. What happened to standing up for a cause and making a difference?! Since when have we become so pessimistic and cynical? There's nothing wrong with standing up for what's right--and Menzies is so wrong. Come on people.

Good speech but we are talking about a basketball coach.

That's my point exactly! How pathetic are we if we can't even stand up for just a basketball program!?
Yup, Kansas and Kentucky excel because their fans demand it. UNLV was at that level at one time but standards have severely slipped and along with that, a loser's mentality has crept in. The law of attraction then kicks into effect.

This is one of those things where if you can't see what kind of damage trying to sabatoge this hire in any way will do on your own, you won't be talked into it.

We are already the punchline of the cbb world. Do this and it multiplies.

It is over. Get over it. We have at least 3 years like this because nobody will blame him for losing the first two.

What an insane situation. These f'n idiots fired Rice mid season to spend three months looking for a splashy hire only to come back with Menzies. Now, we're two plus seasons behind where we were with Rice.

It's akin to a developer blowing up the Stardust on the Strip, then instead of replacing it with a new resort, they just rebuild the exact same Stardust, only they had to pay for it all over again and it took them years to construct. Lunacy.

This could absolutely get bad enough that Menzies never sees year 3. Sub-500 in year two with an empty Mack would be a big problem.

The buyout isn't huge and our new AD will likely have an opinion on Menzies. This league isn't so talent rich that a coach with UNLV's resources should get a pass on wins/losses for his first two seasons.

Next year is what it is, but with loads of playing time to sell in year 2 there's no reason we can't be every bit as talented as the better teams in the MWC.

Can Marv coach with the better coaches in the league? That remains to be seen. I don't think he's ever beaten a top 25 team, so thank goodness we don't have too many of those to worry about.
