Arrived today a little after 8:00 and the parking lot was full. Not just students either. Manny Pacquiao was training on the UNLV track facilities. Quite a following there for him. My first stop was the D Line. Can't say enough about the new coach Tony Samuel. He not only imparts football wisdom to these young men but also techniques that have been missing.

Today was the Pallandech, Woods, Keys, Presley & Price show. Kurt threw 1 early pick but after that he was solid passing and running the ball. Stanton was mediocre to poor at best. Sneed and the rest barely got to sniff the field. Keys had a nice TD on a pass from Stanton (he was soon wide open I could have made the pass) and Price had a couple nice receptions along with 2 TD grabs in the goal line drill. Presley had some nice grabs to go along with a TD.

Gavin White had a nice interception and pass break up. Robert Jackson seems to be settling in and is just a good defender and has great instincts,

The O Line vs the D Line pass protection was some of the most entertaining action of the day. Kreitler does not get beat, Wily does not slow down, McCoy comes up with incredible moves for penetration and Zepeda keeps getting better and better.

Even though there wasn't tackling today (except in the goal line drill) X Campbell showed some good moves and speed for a big back.

Barney Cotton only erupted a couple times today and Kent Baer shouted out what in the &%$#@ is going on out there once. All in all it was a good day. I would add the caveat that I don't think we really have the QB we would like to have at this point and the door is wide open if Armani Rogers is all he is cracked up to be.

Thanks Pete. Glad you could make it.

Really thought Stanton turned a corner on Monday. Disappointing to hear he couldn't build on that.

Maybe it's starting to click for Palandech a little.

My only horse in the race is the one that gives us the best chance to win.

Like everybody else, I was hoping Stanton came in and took the job day one. Maybe things are starting to slow down for Palandech the way they did for Calen Herring his Senior year.

The right side of the O line struggled all day. The o line in general struggled between the one's, two's and three's, but the right side was the weak side. Talked to JD Williams after practice, he mentioned that things were coming along, but he was not quite happy with the way the corners played today. Too many missed assignments, said the guys looked like there were playing tired. Speaking of defensive backs, I like McCoy as an end. After today, I think he has the wheels and the cutting ability to be a great safety too. He was one of the only guys to make it past Saxelid on the one on ones (though it only happened once, it was a convincing effort). During the one on one's Wily showed off his athletic ability by running full tilt into Polu, stopping, back peddling fast enough to make Polu fall down, then was on full blast forward again. The entire scene took less than a second.

Pete isn't wrong, Palandech's passing day was today. He had a nice long td sneak that took him from the 30 yrd line to goal. Kenny Keys almost caught up to him, but Palandech had the head start. Boyd looked like he was making up lost time for the time he missed, he had a fairly good day whenever the ball went towards him.

Good stuff gentlemen I had a feeling that the qb situation would be a battle, may the best man win!
Nice to hear there is talent out on the field to be competitive and hopefully climb out of the cellar and put some fear into our opponents. No easy wins for the other side.

Palandech has had a Spring, Summer, Fall, Spring to work on timing with the WR/TE's in the passing game and understanding of the offense. Has he improved yes. If Stanton keeps trending in the right direction that he is going with decision making the chemistry will continue to build through this summer and Fall.

Stanton also has the ability to be very good on the read option, he "sells" it very well which will open up big plays in the run and pass game. Will he get 50 yards on a scramble probably not but he will get tough yards between the tackles and if he is on the edge against a smaller LB or CB he will win most of those battles as well. Palandech is improving but in the fall I feel Stanton will be taking the first snap against Jackson State.

I am really glad we are starting the season with a very winnable (dominateable) home game. It takes the wind out of sails when you open up getting drubbed by Arizona or Wisconsin or Minnesota.

Now in a few years, I hope that we're able to have those games again and use them as a springboard to a successful season. But for now, give me a bunny to start the season off on the right foot.

Lets hope that its not like 2007 where Appalachian State destroyed Michigan in their opening game.

Coach Sanchez is not coach Hauck. He will be ready and not take any games lightly. I expect a significant improvement in play and wins this year from last year.

I'm skeptical right now given that our QB play hasn't been a strength this spring. Can it improve? Of course. Will it need to improve in order to have a successful season? Of course.

This QB having a good practice today but floundering the next practice gives me reason for concern. Consistency from that position is paramount for our success.

Yes, may the best man win, but because he's good, not because he is the lesser of two evils.

Love that competition across the position groups. Nothing like a good ass-kicking to motivate some people!

Theres no comparison to last year we'll be okay at qb. Paladech is better. Stanton can out everything Decker while still staying health. Sneed has been a pleasant surprise, I wish he was actually in the race. Further more, I expect Armani Rogers to have his number retired at unlv one day after a long successful nfl career.

We'll be fine at QB. HCTS and his coordinators don't like to give the QB spots an easy practice. They follow the Tom Osborne and Bill Belichick ideology in that they want practice to be harder than a regular game. We are far better now than where we were at this time last season. FAR BETTER!

Thanks for talking me off the ledge

Another thing to remember is that Boyd has been limited which means everybody moves up a spot on the depth chart at receiver.

Qbs didn't look great last spring either. Palandech is still plagued with head scratching moments, but he has been noticeably better overall.

A lot of plays are scripted as well, meaning the defense essentially knows what is coming.

The QBs haven't been 'live' which limits the threat of scrambling, which both QBs are good at. We also aren't showing a lot of zone read looks to avoid getting our QBs banged up. Both QBs are very good at that aspect of the game.
