Wait what!?!?!?!?!?

They have a write up on it on syracuse.com. If I knew how to post a link here I would. But with a Google search I found a few places reporting it. Maybe he is trying to get a raise from SDSU but supposedly he is meeting with Syracuse's coach about the DC opening.

His pay is low enough that UNLV could afford to hire him as a DC. Oh how that would trigger SDSU fans!

Could be a power struggle with AD?

Maybe AD pushing him on staff changes like OC?

I would take that dude in a heartbeat.

Chances are non existant, but one can dream...

Who cares about SDSU fans.. If this is legit you hire him at all costs!
Don't let Long slip away again UNLV!

What the hell?

Seems odd. Maybe he wants less responsibility?

Obviously no way UNLV could afford him, but if I were a 1st time HC I would hire that guy in a heartbeat.
If UNLV were able to compensate for him, it's a no doubt hire. Reddit CFB on twitter had a good take on this move:

Also this:

I assume this is supposed to read "as much as player needs"

Pipe dream.

But damn, if your're an AD and you have any favors you can call in for money, you at least make that phone call...

Pure guess, he's either unhappy with stuff behind the scenes at SDSU or he wants a shot at P5 work.

Can't think of another reason, except maybe a bit of burnout? Wants to coach, just doesn't want all the HC responsibility...

Also, if Rocky does leave SDSU, it leaves a massive "who is the best" hole in the West. Obvious media speculation will be Hawaii. Long is an outstanding coach, so I think SDSU would fall off significantly. Guessing Cal State system won't approve them much in the way of additional funds and RL knows he's maxed out, as RCFB mentions above.

My first post on this board. Happy New year to all.

It's got to be a ball buster to see someone like Marcus Arroyo get his first head coaching job at nearly twice Rocky's salary. I actually hope he stays at SDSU. He is an outstanding coach and an asset to the MWC.

He is a very good coach. Defenses are consistently good.

Makes you wonder what is going on over at SDSU.

Rocky's seat can't be the least bit warm. Guys churning out 8-9 win seasons.

Rocky is one of the most successful coaches in the MWC, while he is one of the lower paid coaches in the conference. At some point I expect he has brought up his pay, and if SDSU doesn't do anything about this pay, it is very likely he will and should leave.

Bronco Mendenhall turned his success at an independent/G5 into one of the better P5 coaching stories of the last 5 years. I would think Rocky could do the same

I thought I read here that Long had been offered more $$ but turned it down. I think he wanted more for his assistants instead?

SDSU has never recruited at the level they should. Rocky is saying he doesn't have the horses... Go out and get them.

Not so sure about that. You're battling USC, UCLA, Stanford and Cal, that's 4 P5 teams in your own state.

Last year or year before Boise had the 50th best recruiting class in the country. They were the only G5 school in the top 50.

Bronco has been at VA for 4 years with wins of 2, 6, 8 and 9 wins after the Mike London crap show of 1 winning season in 5 years. Not bad at all.

Bronco was 50 years old. Rocky is 70. He's a hell of a coach but I doubt many P5 teams are interested in handing the HC position over to a guy that age.

That said, If he really wants DC job he should be able to do better than Syracuse. USC should hire him. I would love to see him run a Defense with elite level athletes.

Oh I know. My reply was meant for a now erased post about Bronco's failures at VA.

I'd love for him to run our defense.

Let's start a GoFundMe.

Tedford had a 1.55 million base last year. Not sure how much the state paid vs outside sources? He also has significant bonus potential, an article I read said he could make 3 million.

UNC just handed the reins over to a 68 year old Mack Brown and had their best season in a decade. It’s not all the way out of the realm of ridiculous

I had no idea Rocky got paid that little. Did we make a run at him? We should have!

I didn’t think age needed to be a huge consideration for UNLV with this last hire. Or any time they make a hire for football.

UNLV football has sucked. As such, it will be a stepping stone job. Success, your hire is poached and there is nothing that can be done about it. The only coaches who won’t use it as a stepping stone are old guys that are established and may ride it to retirement. So if you are only going to get three or four years out of a guy (a young guy with success that leaves for greener pastures or an old guy who rides off into the sunset), what does it matter if they are 35 or 65? The key is who can elevate the program in four years and how much can they elevate it? I don’t think age has anything to do with that answer.

SDSU goes to a bowl game every year it seems. Their recruiting classes are usually around#100 in the country. yes there are a lot of schools in the area but there is also tons of high school talent in southern California and Arizona. It doesn't seem like they get their fair share of players. Obviously San Diego is a great place to live and should be easy to recruit to... But they don't.

If the Aztecs are looking for a head coach this is a tough time of year to do so. The coaching carousel is winding down and good candidates are harder to find.

That's an interesting point you've made about age and stepping stone, which got me thinking in general. One other coach that I thought might not have used it as a stepping stone was CTS. I truly believed he would have grown with the program... , he would have asked for more once things fully turned, but I feel like he really loved Vegas and would have wanted a bronze statue of him around in the future. That being said, you also mentioned 'who can elevate the program in four years'. We all know it comes down to wins and losses and i'm guessing that's more of what was intended, but I don't think anyone can argue CTS did more in 'elevating' the program in 5 years than the previous coaches did over 20 years combined! Don't get me wrong, part of me is glad we are moving on and getting new blood in there, but will it be for the long haul, No. Could CTS have done a lot more elevating of the program with the current budget that's being offered - hell yes! Who knows, CTS could be back as the HC in another 5-10 years... if he grows and shows his worth. I just feel like unless we have someone with true Vegas ties at the helm it will always be a stepping stone... I hope i'm wrong.

Rocky out at SDSU. Waiting for the right DC job.

Make the GoFundMe happen @Bullmastiff 1

Hell I'd even be okay with him bringing his best friend (he who shall not be named) along with him.
