To no one's surprise, some upcoming games have been knocked down a bit.

Wichita St. (2-4) has not played well, and has been completely knocked out of the rankings, and zero votes.

Indiana has also dropped completely off. No ranking, zero votes.

Oregon is now #15, and will be the premier game of the non-con so far.

ASU is good, not great. We'll know more after they play Texas A&M (#18) and UK (#1) this week just how good they are.

Arizona (#19) is playing well. Lost a close game to Providence but took it out on Boise. Will be a good matchup for UNLV. They play Gonzaga (#13) this week, so we'll see how well they do.

Some good news: UNLV has votes in the USA today poll (none in the ESPN).

That's your friendly public service announcement. Happy Monday.

Oregon lost a lot from last years team, but have a solid group of returners and new faces.

I don't think Arizona is playing well. Before their last loss they needed OT to beat a winless Santa Clara team, and they only won the game by 2 points.

Thankfully Oregon is ranked #15. I didn't expect to see them ranked that high.

What's the deal with Zimmerman? He got hurt in the last game and I haven't heatd any news about him since.

Just checked the rankings and we're still not close to being in the top 25 although beating Oregon would help a lot. Looks like we wouldn't be in there today unless we shocked the world and beat Kansas (and UCLA).

Minor sprain of his ankle. Holding him out of the remainder of the Prairie A&M game was 100% precautionary.

After a season like last year, I don't really care about opponents rankings. Just win. Van Vleet has been out and the Shockers suck without him. Don't care. Arizona looks like the inexperienced and injured team that they are. Just win an everything else will take care of itself; i.e., rankings, SOS and RPI. Next up, Oregon. A good defensive team who have yet to play outside of Salem, Oregon. This should be a wakeup call for the Ducks. Hopefully they wake up after the 2nd half buzzer has rung.

If we beat Oregon I would imagine that would be enough, two wins against top 25 teams(even if Indiana didn't belong) if not enough definitely put us at the top of the list

One reason I value nonconference wins against ranked opponents so much is I don't think we will get much respect when we win our conference games. There isn't a single team in our conference that we could beat that would make people around the country think "Hmm, I guess UNLV is much better than we thought."

When our conference was stronger, nobody was getting a #1 seed and it took nearly an undefeated season just to get a 2 or 3 seed in March. We won our conference tournament and got disrespected with 7 and 8 seeds.

Now that the conference is weaker, we'll get even less respect. Only way to make that matter less is to win nonconference games against tough teams.

Fortunately even with Wichita State struggling we still play a tough nonconference schedule.

Exactly. Nobody is going to notice anything less than a near perfect run in conference.

Let's have conference run that is within a light year of perfect, and then we can have this conversation.

Why? It has to do with the conversation we were already having. So many people on this site making sure other people keep their expectations in check gets old. Worry about your own.

What a great post - good to see you keeping posters in check about what they should worry about. Well done.

Looks like Kaleb Tarczewski is out 4-6 weeks. That means 2 things. If UNLV beats them, it's because they aren't full strength and the win isn't great, or that if UNLV loses to them it's a big loss because they couldn't beat a UA team that's not at full strength.

Arizona has more 4 and 5 star recruits than UNLV. One player out is not going to break that team. We can say the same about UNLV. We lost a top recruit Goodluck and are not at full strength.

Wichita St is also down 3 players. They for sure are not the same team currently as they will be when UNLV plays them on the road. All are suppose to be back by time we play them.

No team has ever had a perfect conference season in the mwc. Your expectations are too high for this team.

I don't think anybody expects a perfect record. We still don't know how good this team is, and I'd worry about things like potential injuries and playing games at altitude in hostile environments.

However, teams like San Diego State, New Mexico and BYU have all had seasons when they had excellent records in the conference. Today the conference is weaker. So I think having at least 5 losses is going to look pretty weak. It's not like we can make up for that by beating a highly ranked team in the conference because nobody in the conference is even ranked at all.

I didn't even say those were my expectations. There was a conversation about whether non con wins were important. I think they are because we will get no respect no matter what we do in conference play. That was it.

Just win, that's all you can do. Need to stay under 8 loses to make the tourny is my thinking.

I meant having 5 or more losses in the conference would look pretty weak.
