(Unnamed) Expect new OL and RB coaches (Arrigo)

Mark Anderson replied with a quote tweet saying he has heard the same. So sounds like no Garin Justice or Travis Burkett.

Do us a favor, don’t post his tweets here. One of the reasons I rejoined this board was to get away from his “sources”.

Did you see his recent tweet, skipper is being coveted by 9 D-1 teams and two nfl teams, but waiting on a UNLV offer, lol.

Wasn't quite phrased that way, but yeah. I think specifically he said 4 P5 and 5 G5 schools along with two NFL teams. I don't think of that as unbelievable at all actually. I wouldn't expect the Redskins to be calling him to be their HC, maybe a second LB asst. Meanwhile a school like Cal Poly would probably want him as DC. Scaling the job for a guy with a good mind for the game isn't unreasonable.

That was oddly specific.

Also I thought it was odd that he said that Skipper was "first runner up" of the three candidates for the Fresno job that DeBoer was hired for, and implied that a former USC special teams coach named Baxter was second runner up.

Did UNLV name their first and second runner up behind Arroyo? (Sarcasm)

Ya that was odd mentioning the runner up, does any coach ever find out the pecking order when they lose out on a job??

Hear me out...

Unless he is getting the DC job here, there is no way he waits for a 'UNLV offer'..

Our LB coach made around 100k last year. If he was getting any P5 offers at all he's gone...

Possible he may get a Co-Defensive coordinator spot here...

But again, what's the max UNLV could pay if they went with co-coordinators? 250k each?

There are P5 schools that could easily exceed that..

Oregons top three defensive assistants and DC are all over 250k...

Not saying this isn't true or possible, but grain of salt neccessary, this is same guy that wrote an article that Tim Skipper deserved an interview and was best candidate to replace Sanchez...

Absolutely. If he is offered anything as a DC elsewhere, I would be surprised for him to stay here, of course if he is being asked to take a step backwards to LB, there's no reason he would stay. I wasn't implying that UNLV could compete, just that we don't know exactly what the positions offered his way are. I can't imagine paying either OC or DC more than $550k (half-zies if they hit the "co-" button). That eats up half of the reported staff salary pool. Frankly, every P5 *should* be paying more than that.

If Skip is being offered LB spots in the NFL or P5, he would be best served to take them. More so for DC positions if he's offered any of those. But it may be worth looking at if nobody else is offering him DC spot. We just don't know enough of the details to make any decent guesses, you know?

I understood your position. Also agree.
(Hope that didn't come off snarky..unintended if it did)

I question the validity of 'runner up' at two different jobs...

Only way he stays at UNLV is if he is getting DC position. If there are 'multiple' offers out there, they all are likely offering more $$$ than what UNLV could match.

Which means he isn't being offered a DC spot elsewhere. (At least not yet) If he was, he would grab it, because just about any P5 school could pay more than UNLV..Why would he wait for UNLV and risk having no job if P5 schools or similar G5 schools have made him offers?

I don’t know if Arroyo is looking at him but an excellent recruiter here that Arroyo and Dunn know is Eric Henderson DL Coach of the Rams. Might be worth a google
Worth noting that Eric Henderson used to play for the UFL Las Vegas Locos here in Vegas from I think 09-11. So he's familiar ...ish... with these parts.

Bull - I'm on board with what you're saying above, makes sense! If he was being offered, he would be gone. Cant argue with that!

just about any P5 school could pay more than UNLV..

Most of the P5 staffs were already getting pretty filled out the week of Dec 16th. I believe there were only 6 total P5 head coaching changes, and with Peterson retiring at Washington I think most of that staff is remaining intact under Jimmy Lake. At Florida St Norvell has filled all but one of the assistant spots, and I would expect similar situations at Missouri, BC, Ole Miss, and Arkansas.

There will be a few openings with other programs where there aren't HC changes, but not a lot and they tend to promote from within.

We don't like @Bullmastiff 1 on these boards so we'll kick him off if you want to stay. Just say the word!
Bullmastiffs negativity is the reason the Rebels lose. People are angry with him, not the Rebels. Even when he’s reasonable, it’s too much negativity!!!! People are sick of him, not the Rebels losing!

That's what doesn't make sense.

I wouldn't be surprised if Skipper has received phone calls. Guy can recruit.

But if P5 schools are calling him, why would he wait on UNLV?

The only reason to wait, would be he thinks he is getting/retaining the DC job.

Otherwise it would be foolish on his part to turn down any P5 job. He could go make 100k+ to be a LB coach somewhere.

I get this is the most UNLV will have ever committed to coaching staffs, but, we ain't paying the kind of money you're telling NFL teams 'Yeah, let me get back to you'...

I think when I said,

'Guys, I would take some of the slightly overzealous reports on recruiting with a grain of salt. The defense might be a little better but don't buy into all of the noise out there or expect miracles'

Was the final nail in the coffin..

They never recovered..

I mean its possible.

Maybe he's been offered position coach jobs. Maybe he and Arroyo had preliminary talks and he feels confident he will be retained as DC.

But if DC is on the table anywhere else, especially P5 schools..Not many reasons I can see for him to wait around..

Joe Bob Clements. Im sorry but I just CANNOT take a guy like that seriously. Thats about as redneck as you get. Tell me you dont picture a caricature of deep, swampy south.
He and Ed Orgeron would be able to understand each other and that’s as far as that conversation would go. It would be like “Ed Orgeron vs closed caption” videos on YouTube.

Full disclosure... my family is from West Virginia (up by Pittsburgh so not the real hillbillies..haha). My grandmother used to say “sang-wich” for the meal and a majority back there say “yunz” for “all you people.”

So, in essence, I’m somewhat bilingual since I can translate some of that talk and speak with the rest of the country in normal speak.

Wow.

The close Italian family of one of my best childhood friends, lived a few houses away. They used those words precisely. They were from Ohio... I’m trying to think where in Ohio. Some hick place, tiny town. Funny to hear those words again.

Maybe Steubenville?

Part of my family is in Steubenville as well. [roll] The city's claim to fame is that it's where Dino Crocetti is from. The world knew him by the name of Dean Martin.

SW Pennsylvania area has it's own language and twang. Steubenville is only about 40 minutes away from Pittsburgh despite having to drive through WV and into OH. So when I fly into Pittsburgh and drive to Steubenville, while passing through WV, people assume I'm driving cross country. It's equivalent to driving from Boulder City to NLV but with many more trees.

Yes..

Every school releases a list of how candidates finished in coaching searches.

You can find it on...

They could've been negotiating with Skipper's agent and told him as such. I'm not a fan of Arrigo but he's been all over the assistant coaches. As for his credibility, didn't Adam Sheffter say Marrone was fired and backtracked today?

#UNLVfb coaching news: New names on Coach Arroyo's staff are: Kenwick Thompson (LB/D-RG) Cameron Norcross (OL) Jordan Paopao (TE) Danny Langsdorf (QB) Scott Baumgartner (WR) This goes along with the hires from last week. Formal announcements coming after Bowl game

If its recruiting news, his info tends to be very good. Beyond that...It can be very hit or miss...

He missed on Thad Matta. Bad. Said UNLV interviewed Graham Harrell. This was debunked by multiple sources.

This creates skepticism.

As for Skipper..

Why would a school tell an agent 'You or your client finished 2nd'?

More likely its less exact, something along the lines of 'he was a finalist'.. Or nothing at all. Or 'We have decided to go a different route'

If Skipper has P5 interest it seems like it would be as a position coach. It would be the only reason he is waiting to speak with Arroyo. If he has offers as a DC, UNLV likely can't match that salary..

Joe creates skepticism by tweeting and doing articles essentially campaigning for Tim Skipper to be HC. He may not think he does, but it sure comes off like that when you compare it to his takes on other coaches.

There are currently something like 12-15 DC jobs open right now..

Army, Boston College, Ohio State, USC, Reno, Memphis, Colorado State, Syracuse, New Mexico, UNLV, Ole Miss and Vanderbilt. Is Tim Skipper up for any of those DC jobs besides UNLV? Possible. But outside of Reno and New Mexico, who else could UNLV win a bidding war with? Makes it seem more likely that interest in Tim Skipper would be for a position coach spot.

Sounds like Ole Miss has closed their DC opening. Or at least hopes to (Michigan staffer)... your point remains the same.

Totally right on Arrigo. I think his content is worth posting here, all of us know enough to not take it as gospel, but it can be insight. You're spot on on his frequent support of candidates or showing favoritism. Part of the issue is that he is a guy who was friends with some of the right people and some of the high school staffers that parlayed it into something of a media/journalism gig.

Doesnt really seem to vet sources well. Probably a really good dude, I have no idea. Seems nice enough and generally gets things pointed in a plausible direction.

Matta and Herrell are two prime examples of his stuff being content but not necessarily news.

All that to say I agree with you

He has some decent stuff. No doubt.

But.

That's my main issue.

Well that and..

You can't predict 9-3 or 8-4. And when things go south tell fans they are unrealistic. Don't try and put it on fans.

Some people's unrealistic expectations were a direct result of his reporting.
