Based on the results this week I don't think the Rebs break into the top 25. Beat Fresno in two weeks and I think they are in.

Crazy to think Rebels could actually be involved in a top 25 showdown when they face Syracuse.

Agree. Probably close to 30…. Then maybe some attrition during the bye week… then take care of business and maybe. Not gonna leap frog Boise though.

Yeah, we aren’t cracking it and that’s ok.

I doubt the team needs to motivation against Fresno, but it’s something that can be used. Win and we are top 25 and then we get Top 25 Syracuse at home ….

UNLV football playing in a game between two ranked teams in October. Things only complete Randy Quaid type kooks could predict 20 years ago.

Watched them play the Seminoles yesterday and we are better than both lol it’s amazing how much credit Memphis gets for beating the worst fsu team I may have ever seen
Right? Memphis gets credit for beating an 0-2 FSU team that's awful and all of a sudden their playoff favorites, mostly because the rest of their schedule sucks. I get it might not look good to pick a 10-2 MWC team but both ourselves and Boise went out and played schedules and probably give the playoff game a better game of it...

Tim Pernetti (AAC) please give our AD a call and let's get the ball rolling to save us from our sinking ship. AAC might be interested now that we are ranked. AF I'm sure is ready to go as well.

Boise State is playing one Power Four Conference team and UNLV is playing three. No other team in the group of 5 has scheduled more than two. Memphis has only scheduled one if you want to call 0-3 Florida State a Power Four Conference team! Liberty has schedule zero! #21 ranked Iowa State plays at Houston in two weeks, that game could really help UNLV out if Houston wins. I just hope that the week off doesn't drop UNLV out of the top 25.

Pardon my ignorance but we DONT get that sexy little number by our name because we are effectively #29 in the AP, right?

I love the possibility that the first ever game UNLV plays as a ranked team is a home game against a ranked ACC team. How cool is that
I see that Syracuse dropped out the ranking during their bye week (3). Correct me if I am wrong but it looked like they got punished for having a bye week.

I think it has more to do with the fact they got there by beating a GT team that was only ranked because they beat a top 10 FSU, which is now proving how terrible they are.

Syracuse has not yet been ranked this year, so they didn’t fall out of anything. The assumption is that they will be ranked if they come to Vegas undefeated.

They won't be ranked next week.

They will fall out by being off
Very possible, but there are numerous teams ranked above and just below UNLV that play. 18th ranked Michigan plays at home against 11th ranked USC; 19th ranked Louisville play at home against Georgia Tech; 22nd ranked Nebraska plays at home verse 24th ranked Illinois (at least one of those two will drop below UNLV); 23rd ranked NIU plays Buffalo which is one of those games that could lose votes even with a win; Memphis plays Navy; Washington State plays San Jose State; Syracuse plays Stanford; etc...

The hope is that at least 2-3 of the teams above and below lose games which would keep UNLV safe.

Our coach sucks. It took “Slow Growth” Odom a whopping 17 games to bring us from one of the historically worst programs and a perennial bottom 10 program to the top 25.

It should have taken 9 or 10 games if he was a real coach.

If you make the right hire for a program, more times than not you get the feeling right away, not a few years later. If you ain’t feeling it within the first couple of seasons - meaning ACTUAL growth, not “well, the losses were closer” or “we hit free throws better” - it ain’t going to happen.

Just get the job done, take full responsibility of the program, don’t blame facilities or the fans or a lack of time … excuses, excuses, excuses … slow growth is a loser mindset.

Aiming high and falling short usually yields better results than aiming low and hitting the target.

The Arroyo firing was a surprise to most on campus, which is hilarious and goes to Joe's point. 95% of the department thought there would be at least one more season. I wish the University used the same lense to look at other sports on campus.

How many of us get a ton of rope to continue failure on a daily basis? These guys make a lot of money. Not saying you need a final four or sweet 16, but there should be VERY visible improvements/changes immediately … if it appears like the same ol, same ol, odds are it’s going to remain that way. And then it becomes a matter of when, not if. And with each passing year that you “save money” by not firing, you lose fans and interest which loses some money at gate, but overall, just kills community goodwill.

So get it right at the beginning. If you don’t, your ass should be on the firing line for fn up the primary reason you’re an AD.

Whatever your primary directive is for your job …. Are you allowed continued failure? They are, and they get rich while failing.

Just get the fn job done. Or get tf out.

Can’t remember the first time I heard slow growth, whether it was here, in an article or in an interview with a coach that used the phrase. Wherever it came from, it made me sick to my stomach because what I heard is “listen, we are going to suck for a couple of seasons but we need to you show up and be enthusiastic to help us out, then a few years in, we will show you what we can do” … and that what we can do can still be failure. But it doesn’t matter. They cashed in their millions. And it only cost the time and energy and goodwill of the fanbase.

If the money situation was better I think they would.

I know most (as in 99.5%) of the people on these boards are UNLV fans and basketball is/was the reason.

If money was better I truly believe Harper would have moved on from Kevin after this season.

I think whatever money there is, is being directed towards football (as it should have been 15 years ago but that's a different discussion).

Harper is going to let Kevin coach himself out of a job or into an extension this year.

Rebs just don't have the money to pay a guy not to coach.

If they don’t have the money and they make a move … and have to go on the extreme cheap …. Just offer a two year contract … yeah, not standard. Would drive some away. But some will take it because they’re hungry for the opportunity. I’d rather somebody know they have to get it done right away or they’re losing their job than giving a 5 year 2.5M for mediocre results and you can’t move on them. You can’t afford the Neon Deion way. A lot of cash for only flash. Flash doesn’t matter. Results do.

With hoops, where’s the improvement been? It took three freaking years to back into an NIT in a mediocre conference? Come on.

Recruiting bland, hasn’t paid dividends. Results very bland, bad losses outnumber strong wins.

I hope things change this year, maybe they will. If not, be done with it and move onto next.

Or if the uni wants to say “we are sinking all resources into football, football is what we are” not caring much about basketball, then extend him without a raise since the program won’t matter any longer. I’m fine with that as well.

I don't disagree but not sure how many guys would sign up for a job with so little security.

Well, if you’re going to pay cheap, you’ll draw from a tiny pot anyway. But in that tiny pot you’re going to typically have never had been an HC before type of guy … some of those guys are just looking for an opportunity. They’ll take what they can get, they just want their shot.

… I’m saying this only if they’ve decided basketball doesn’t matter anymore, everything goes into football …. If that’s the case, you’re protecting against losses instead of trying to maximize gains.

I don’t like it, it’s a loser mentality … it’s the among the same line of thinking of slow growth as a philosophy … but I’d rather deal with realities instead of fantasies.

From let’s ride Tark's coattails to basketball will always take care of everything to sliding down to not caring … it’s been evident to me …. Just get on with it
