I am surprised nobody else mentioned this. Then again maybe nobody cares???
Either way I checked one out and its interesting as TJ seems to go after these under the radar kids so often or role players maybe. This would never happen with Rice or others. That being said it could possibly work though.
Tillis from all signs is a unathletic 6-6" SG who can stroke it from the arc and is pretty damn smart with IQ. He is not good at finishing due to bounce around the rim but otherwise offensively I liked what the tape showed. He will be a defensive liability though. The more I see certain recruits I see a few of them fitting this category. Good shooter, avg defense, good hustle kind of thing. Tillis could very well be better than that category though. I like him loads more than Martinez for sure. I saw some passes that I really liked on the film. He could be a Joe Darger type or something. Time will tell. He could put on some muscle in a year and improve a lot.
Here is the thing, TJ needs to get an overall better athlete for D1 basketball in my opinion. You need guards who play above the rim if you are playing small ball. Tillis not dunking on certain drives is concerning to me more than anything but he will still contribute unlike some others. All this being said, I do like the kid and by his Junior year he will be a 12 ppg and 7 rpg player 4 apg easily. Smart players like this do a lot that nobody sees. I wish he had bounce like that BYU kid at Wasatch Academy though.
