Thon Maker is

If nothing else, it's great publicity when we really need it. For this to be a successful coaching change, we need to keep the talent level where it's at, whether by keeping our roster together, or replacing departures with the same level players. We don't wanna end up like New Mexico!

Funny you should mention the Lobos. I was scanning their message board today. They are absolutely falling all over themselves in ripping UNLV for making the mid-season coaching change. They are delighting in the notion that Rebel Basketball is in total disarray.

They are, of course, taking their cue from the fraternity of ex-coaches, and east coast sports writers, who bemoan the dangerous precedent. These voices are either speaking from self-interest, or mis-information. For instance, a frequently-cited argument points to Rice “having the decency” to remain with the Rebels when USF came calling. Those of us who lived through it, know that it wasn’t exactly like that.

So Lobo fans and talking heads can declare UNLV an embarrassment if they like, but what was truly embarrassing was the play of Coach Rice’s team. If Coach Simon manages to salvage the season, the last laugh will be ours.

I agree with the sentiment that it was not the optimal move to fire Rice now. Unless the powers that be wanted to hire a guy that is available now, and they didnt want to miss the opportunity. But, we know that's not the case. No, the boosters that made the decision likely wanted to boot Rice while they were guaranteed success. They didnt want to take the chance of the Rebels making the tourney in the end.

And in my opinion, they not only put our current season at greater risk, they put future seasons at greater risk. I'd bet that teems that keep their coach turn their seasons around more often then interim coaches do. Also we are now at greater risk of losing recruits and current players with 3 month period of limbo instead of a 3-4 week coaching search.

But hey, here's to bucking the odds. They played great against the Lobos and made them look impotent. So far, I like Simon and I've got hope for this season and the future...We'll see!

It was the right choice to let Rice go. He probably should have been let go last year. Funny because I've heard many new mexico fans wanting noodle fired. Our teams just have not be playing up to their pptential under Rice, have under performed and fallen more each year under Rice. This is a great group.of kids and keeping Rice was not fair to them. I don't understand the whole just fire him at end of season. Basically saying throw the towel in, keep doing same thing over and over with same results. Had to shake things up! Also gives a longer time frame to look for a coach.

We are kicking ass without Rice. How can anybody question the firing. I know it's 2 games but still..

I would want noodle fired for his hair alone. I will never be able to look at him again without thinking about the little hair flip he did sitting on the bench waiting for our game to begin.

oh no!!! Noodles hair is a gift from the Gods. that's some good stuff and you have to commend him in that he has the balls to wear it, especially in the photo below. he's got it going silver fox style now. i'm a Noodles fan.

well, that's my opinion anyway.

Neal is going to eventually blow this season because he can’t put his coaching decisions ahead of his fatherly pride. He’s insisting on making his son a point guard, which he is clearly not…

The kid can shoot pretty well, but he’s no floor general. Not a ball-handler and not a facilitator. I’m not sure if he’s got a better option on his team, but I know that Lobo fans are not happy. That 3-0 start to the MWC season was fool’s gold. What we witnessed at the T&M last week was much more indicative of UNM’s ability, or lack of same.

There will be calls for Noodle's head, hair and all, by season's end.
