Our players go into games sometimes and you can just tell that they just don't really want it all that bad. I think it might be one of the reasons why we do so shitty in conference play every year. Top 50 players, future pro players, and they go into Reno ho hum. they weren't up for that game. They weren't pumped. They wanted to win, but they didn't really WANT it.
They have no idea the importance of an instate rivalry between The north and south, they could care less. Well I'm not going to totally discredit them for not wanting to win at all, but Reno wanted it more.
We get a lead and it's like they think to themselves "yeah we are better than these guys" . Reno keeps fighting takes the lead and our players think to themselves. "yeah we could beat you if we really wanted to".
Their have been games where I have seen them focused and wanting it bad. In Tuscon, they wanted that game, they played with desire, Arizona just played better and they wanted it too. In Maui against Indiana, they wanted that game.
I don't know how you motivate these young kids these days for teams that aren't ranked and without history, but it is a shame. You think pride and embarrassment in losing would be enough. What used to work back in my day doesn't work these days. If I were the coach, I'd make them run suicides for 3 hours from line to line ala Kurt Russell in Miracle, AGAIN, AGAIN, then if they complained, I'd say "if you don't like it, their is the door, you can quit" and you know what? they probably would. That's why I'm not the coach, I'd have a roster of Barry Chaney, Ben Carter, and five other buys from the football team.
