Most on this board are too young to remember him, but we lost a terrific Rebel today; James Santini.

When Coach Tark and the Rebels were going through their first NCAA investigation in the late 1970's, Santini was a Congressman from Nevada. While the NCAA was saying that UNLV was out of order, Santini (like Al Pacino in the movie) screamed to the nation that the NCAA was out of order. Jim called for Congressional hearings to examine the NCAA enforcement program. He was able to persuade the chair of the House Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations of the Committee on Interstate and Foreign Commerce to convene hearings, which began in February 1978 and continued until July 1979. Jim had numerous NCAA frauds sweating publicly in front of Congress for six months; it was beautiful. At the conclusion of the hearings, the House subcommittee was unable to substantiate any allegations of improper influence in the enforcement process, but the residue was that the NCAA substantially changed their enforcement procedures, moving forward...Rest in peace, Great Santini.
