Sunk Cost

2 minutes into last night game, I knew exactly what Reno wanted to do. They were going to punish Jordi for being small. They were going to post him up, they were going to shoot over him. They didn't have a PG for him to match up against, so there was always going to be a mismatch to exploit.

JJ quickly got his second foul, and Reno went to plan B, C, & D. Attack McCoy. Attack McCoy. Attack McCoy.

The run they went on knocked us out of the game. But the worst part of the run was how Menzies handled it. Every time McCoy gave up an easy bucket, Menzies would be yelling instructions exclusively to McCoy as he ran by. Menzies chose not to call a timeout to get the team and McCoy on the same page. He put all of his coaching energies into one player as the lead ballooned.

It is no wonder he has lost the team. The rest of the team is dying for an offensive game plan in the absence of our point guard and Menzies is only concerned about his pet NBA project. The rest of the team is watching the weakest link break over and over again and there is no lifeline in sight.

Finally Menzies calls a timeout. But the game is over. Reno got loose. The Rebels had lost all faith in each other and the plan. And Menzies is sitting there trying to figure out what to say to his team, as they shuffle towards the huddle. His focus was only on McCoy, I doubt he even knew what was happening elsewhere no the floor. He probably didn't even notice that Juice had appointed himself to be the backup PG in an effort to get our offense going.

McCoy is a sunk cost fallacy. Menzies just keeps pouring effort/attention/coaching into him in hopes of either an in game payout, or for future recruits to choose Menzies for his ability to get guys to the league. The actual end result is are UNLV losses and thinning crowds.
