It will be interesting to see who starts at PG to start the year and if it changes as the year plays out. Will it be Jordan Mccabe that starts the year at PG?

I'm confident the best player will start. If someone beats out Jordan, then good for him. He earned it. Is competition good? usually. Hopefully Jordan is having an awesome offseason and is training his ass off. The kid is a typical PG. grinder all day long - will drill until the cows come home, however...... How hard can he work without the ball in his hands (weight room)? KId is beat up and has some nagging injuries he needs to address, its effecting his confidence.

I like his vision, passing , ball handling, and assist to turnover ratio. But his shooting has to improve for the team to consistently make a better showing. Especially this year with our lack of scorers.

Last year, early in the year, he looked decent shooting 37% from three in his first 10 games. But for his last 10 games he shot 27%.

This team will have to get balanced scoring. We need the 37% McCabe all year.

Agree about the putrid shooting but just as importantly to me is the way he was abused on defense against the drive. I feel that’s why coach brought in the tenacious defenders and we will see a lot of minutes out of them.

Maybe When CK is looking for a shutdown D go with Gilbert, Eli P at off guard, Harkless at small forward, Victor or Luis at power forward and Muoka center. Of course different line up with offense

There was a reason he fell out of favor at West Virginia.

But his defense was better than Cody Doolin or even Jenkins. He has decent fundamentals, just lacks quickness.

That lack of quickness is the reason for his biggest weakness offensively. Its not the shooting, it is the inability to beat his defender off the drive. His shot was on and off last season. He did get on a stretch of a few games where his shot was actually quite good. But coming in he was not known to be a lights out shooter.

But he seems to be a good leader. He can settle the team down and run the team. He has great vision, even if he can't throw the alley oop. He has all off those little qualities you want your PG to have.

I see McCabe starting at PG just for that reason. But someone needs to be able to drive and kick on the floor with him. Harkless maybe? Not sure about that part of his game.

McCabe can’t get separation when trying to create. Kevin Kruger was not speedy Gonzalez when he played here but he could get his shot off. I know he was taller too but McCabe has to get this figured out and be more than a traffic cone on D. I would love to see what JJ can do and if he is the better option, then so be it!

He didn’t bother me as he did most people. Some players have minimal value, I don’t see McCabe as that. That said, I think on the type of team you want, he’s a 10-15 minute guy/foul trouble/emergency starter type, not the type that is going to anchor a team that has actual success.

I am hoping some one can be good enough to fill the spot. Maybe Eli P even though he did not score much in Colorado. Harkless seems more of a off guard. That leaves Jackie Johnson or Gilbert. Gilbert needs offense this year and hopefully Jackie has some D. Maybe Webster but he is more of a 2 guard. Hopefully the trip to Canada gives the fans a little inkling at PG

We’re in trouble if McCabe is the starter all year. Good guy, love the assist to TO ratio, but he’s a complimentary piece for a good team. As we know, Basketball is a quick fix sport. We should expect to be a good team in year two.

IMO Point Guard depends upon the play of the forwards and centers. If they can score inside off set plays, this team gets a whole new look. Inside and out become a reality as teams will have to double the inside to stop the inside game. We will be fast, strong, and in shape team compared to last year as P5 transfers take over and set the mood for new recruits staff has concentrated on for 2023.

Imo, the play of forwards and centers depend upon the point guard, hitting them with precise timing, in the right spot, controlling the player flow on the floor.

We’ve had great players who don’t fill the point guard role properly and the team doesn’t function as well as it should.

We’ve had mediocre to good point guards who captain the floor and know how/when to deliver and the team maximized their offense.

good point, I could totally see that. Matchups have a lot to do with the equation also. Styles of opposition could factor in as well. Pressing teams = our best ball handler. Or if they have a 6'3 PG who can jump through the gym - maybe you don't want McCabe defending him? lot of reasons to go with different guys. McCabe is going to be hard to beat out, because he is always going to be on time for practice and he's kind of like having another coach out on the floor. He knows the game well.

McCabe will also be able to feed the post better than anyone else on the roster.

If he is the only one that struggles to defend, with others that do very well on the floor, it becomes less of a liablilty. If a team has an athletic driving PG, he would probably switch on D.

We just need someone who can penetrate with the ball and find the open man to expand the offense and help shooters on the floor with him. Bryce got pretty good at that for us last year.

I just cannot see Jordan can still be the starting PG while JJ, Harkless and even Gilbert available. It’s CKK call, so whatever it maybe I. Hope it will work

A lot of it does come down to coaching philosophy. Some like to use bigs as pick setting minimum touch guys. If you do that, you better have strong outside shooting and some slashers and ball handlers.

I don’t think Kevin is going to “ignore”, for lack of a better word, the post. While his dad was here, the bigs weren’t the strength of the team, but they were still an integral part of the offense.

The one huge plus for whomever the point guard will be next year is that Coach Kruger and his staff appear to have the ability to coach up players in comparison to the last few head coaches who really didn't improve the players that they recruited. I expect to see an improvement in whoever is the point guard for UNLV, and expect by the start of this next season that point guard, whomever they end up being, will be better than our point guard at the end of last season!
