Tate Martell Reportedly Pulled A No-Show At Practice After Losing Starting QB Job To Freshman
Darrelle Lincoln

This is not a good way to respond to losing out on a job.

On Monday, Miami head coach Manny Diaz officially named Jarren Williams the starting quarterback of the Hurricanes.

So how did Tate Martell, who transferred from Ohio State to start over, respond to losing the starting QB position? He didn’t show up to practice.

247Sports Miami insider Andrew Ivins reported that Martell did not participate in Monday’s practice just hours after the huge announcement.

I’m hearing that Tate Martell didn’t practice Monday. Manny Diaz has obviously named Jarren Williams the team’s starting QB. https://247sports.com/college/miami/Article/Source-Tate-Martell-didnt-practice-Monday-134401182/ …

If he wants to finally come home after quitting 2 football teams (OHSt, Miami). I am not sure how Sanchez can turn him down as he is easily the best quarterback Talent on roster throwing the football. Armani is still the better Runner. But you wonder would we lose the 3 star QB in next year's class plus 1 or 2 of our current backups like Gilliam or OBald.

Why would you, of all people, take offense? I should take equal offense since I am bald.
If I was bald I'd take DOUBLE offense. Believe me, I went by OBald, O'Bladder, O'Blad, O'blad, Oblah for most of m'life.... a chord was struck....stricked....stricken?

The point still stands.
Maybe...depending on what your point is. If your point is nothing other than "he'd be the most talented..." then I agree. If your point is, "it's funny you guys wouldn't want him because he's the best QB..." then I disagree. Skills as a QB can only get you so far when your OL and WR are continuously rolling their eyes every time you open your mouth or take to twitter. He's not well liked and has shown he won't put in the necessary work. He expects everything to come to him like it did in HS.

Norwegian Wood. The song you're thinking is my favorite Beatles song used as the opening credits of an 80s show with a down syndrome actor in one of the principal roles.
Patton Oswalt is great in AP Bio but doesn't have DS . . . common mistake.

Martell would be better than any QB UNLV has ever recruited not named Randall Cunningham

UNLV not really in position to turn nose at a talented guy unless off field issues dictated it. Or they would be a cancer in the locker room.

Coach Sanchez could answer the last part.

The one position that I think UNLV is already stacked at long term is at QB. We have no reason to waste any of our scholarships on a risky transfer even if it has potential when we already have that potential in the existing recruits.

Agreed. I'd rather get a stud pass rusher.

How much eligibility does Tate even have left at this point?

I get the general risk of Tate, which doesn't excite me. It's also make or break for Sanchez. With the obvious limitations of Armani, which do not seem to be improving according reports, it may be worth pursuing.

The future may be bright at QB, but it's not really at the moment, and the young guys seem to need more seasoning before they can shoulder the team from the outside looking in.

I also totally get wanting to pass based off the off the field stuff. Sanchez should know that well.

Us old timers remember Glen Carano, Gina's Dad, as a pretty damn good quarterback.

What gets me is that NO qb on our roster can grab the job from AR? He's definitely a one dimensional qb and can only run. NO ONE can hit 50-60% of their passes and run occasionally?

I don't think they are allowing competition for the job. It has been stated repeatedly the last two years.
CTS seems to have hitched his wagon to AR and is betting his job on it. Unless AR can become a competent passer, this seems like a poor career move.

@willlevi

Armani's RS freshman year, I thought Stanton was the better QB through Spring.

I felt Stanton should have received the job and they should have worked Armani in slowly.

Most people on the outside who attended that Spring camp felt the same thing. Stanton was the better QB. He wasn't head and shoulders better, but he was better.

Maybe those rating services that people quote as if they are the bible don't always get it right. Or that all 4 stars aren't created equal.

Both Gilliam and Rogers were 3/4* QBs.

Armani hasn't been horrible in camp.

There are some things he does pretty well.

What I like about him is that he typically reads the play correctly. Goes to the right read. Doesn't put the ball in danger and throw it into coverage very often.

What I hate is that even though he makes the right read, he misses way to many throws.

He still gives them the best chance to win in my opinion.

Oblad, would require changing the entire offense.

Grayson you could keep a lot of the same stuff, on offense but he isn't a significantly better passer than Armani. And he isn't as explosive a runner as Armani. I will say this though...Of all the QBs I have watched, Grayson has improved the most. Completely different looking player now than from when he got here...

Gilliam you can keep some of the RPO stuff in. His issue is that he puts the ball in danger to much. I'm not as down on Gilliam as a lot of people are. He beat SDSU on the road. His numbers were comparable to Armani minus the rushing.

Mumphrey is maybe a little ahead of where Grayson was his freshman year.

Armani has 4-Star physical talent but he lacks in the technical details as a quarterback.
Barney Cotton seemed to prefer a modern age option style offensive attack that depends on the run. In the sense, Armani is definitely comparable to Nebraska's Tommy Frazier but with the same passing game limitations.

He's a pitcher with great stuff but control issues.

Can strike out the side one inning and walk the bases loaded the next.

Sanchez is so all in on Armani that he undermines his backups. He says things like "Armani is our number 1 and 2, the backups are competing for the number 3 slot." (I forget what the actual quote was). When Gilliam was getting ready to start his first game, what did coach do? He sent Armani out for the coin toss. At the time some were sayin that Armani was lost for the season, but CTS thought it was important to send a message.

It is hard to succeed when management prefers that you fail.
