They are looking at an 8 win season - perhaps better.

I don't get how they can be better than us year after year. It doesn't make any difference how they recruit, who their coach is, what OOC games they play. Year in and year out they are just better. Better line on each side of the ball. Better QB and better skill players. And not by a little bit. They are way better. This week they are 39th to our 128th. The last time we had 8 wins was under John Robinson. Before that Harvey Hide.

So, can anyone explain how this happens?

UNLV hires admins due to their connections and low background experience. Stays in the position until another dumb University makes the same mistake. Some just stay forever collecting $$$ from the State. Bad hires makes bad hires which then makes bad hires. UNLV

There is no reason. it is what it is and will be the same until it changes. And the change will happen for no apparent reason.

Something that recurs for 30+ years has to have a reason - a specific reason. Perhaps the facts that reveal what this reason is can't be found but there is a reason. Early on I believe Chris Ault was a dominating force and he could be the main reason. He was a HS coach in Reno, had a short stint here as an assistant and then went home. Was extremely successful for 26 years as we went through coach after coach. That success gave him the ability to run things the way he wanted - and he was good at it. We are always bringing in outsiders. Also Reno, at least for the time he was a head coach, was a much more close knit town than we were or are.

Chris Ault is a good explanation. Also the idea that Reno is more closely knit. Beating Las Vegas is a bigger deal for Reno residents than the converse is for us. But it is more complicated than that. Different people will come with assorted plausible explanations. But in the end, there will be generally accepted reason. I am comfortable with bad luck. There were all sorts of decisions that in retrospect could pointed to as less than optimal. But each of those branching points could have been a turning point. The current team is very competitive and winless. Can Arroyo generate an iota of positive momentum going into next season?

I am still mystified by our continued ineptitude. But I stay optimistic that there is a light at the end of this colossal tunnel.

The tunnel reminds of the big dig in Boston that ran billions over budget and took over 20 years to finish!

They were inept in 2020.

This year they crumble late. The team is infinitely more sound in 2021 than it was in 2020. They pass the eye test of a football team in 2021. They did not in 2020.

My point is that ineptitude is an absolutely inaccurate way to describe a team with leads and ties late in 4th quarter. They are inept for 90 seconds at end of half and end of game, yes. Have there been really bad spots throughout games? Yes, namely pass defense (re pass rush and coverage) and coaching indecision/mismanagement. No doubt there.

Ineptitude is a bit of a reach in my opinion...

It is hard to watch the team this year knowing that a couple of better coaching decisions should have left UNLV with 3 or more wins instead of an 0-7 record. With all of the dropped passes this season, it does make you wonder how much of a difference the new stud WR Randy Masters in Texas could make on the team next year? Any WR who scores 6 TD's in a single game is a game changer!

I don't think it's totally coaching decisions. There have been some questionable calls no argument.

But how many drops, especially early in the season that stalled drives...I think in the EWU game there were at least 3 possible 4.

Or false starts, or jump offsides etc.

Arroyo has been far from perfect but players shoulder some of it as well..

Rebswin2 hit it.

Culture.

But if I could add another single word reason, second to culture, I would say..

Catalyst.

Although we have had a few things that could have been a catalyst, football facility, stadium, etc., none have worked as well as that single player that changes your team. It doesn’t need to be an amazing recruit, but a perfect fit. Kurt Warner with the greatest show on turf, golden knights misfits, buddy Ryan with 85 bears def, etc.

At some point, statistically, it will happen for us, if we keep trying. But it’s much easier to launch a catalyst with stronger culture. We don’t have that so we need to hope for a catalyst strong enough to turn around the culture

Was UNLV build on an Indian burial ground? I heard that is super bad luck. Only reason I can come up with to be bad this long.
I subscribe to the idea of a unlv administrator walking to the crossroads with Ralph macchio and joe Seneca and traded for Tark and twenty amazing basketball years for it to abruptly end and for football to wallow in eternal misery

Crossroads!

2021, 1st half scores, unlv 84 opponents 94
2nd half, unlv 53-143

Seems our coaches do not adjust well to changing strategies.

I'm frustrated like all Rebel fans but not as down on the stock I still see it as a buy. Old news now but still important to know we addressed a lot of issues to build a foundation that can last.
Stadium issues solved
Football facilities solved
Coaching staff background checks show NFL experience/recruiting
Coach MA record sucks no doubt close calls, tough schedule, quarterback health issues. I have not been a fan of the QB carousel. Still learning on the job making the move from OC to head coach. Players like him.

I tape the games then I rewatch them as if I was back in the film room. Over and over. There is potential you'll see freshman, redshirt freshman, and sophomores flashing making plays.
Defense: Jaylen Lane, Johnathon Baldwin, Brennon Scott, Leshaun Bell, Jalen Dixon
Offense: Brumfield, Friel, Kaleo Ballungay, KMJ

Remember Friel did not have a senior year in HS due to covid so our starting qb last live action came his junior year in HS that's insane and a recipe for disaster but with Dougie and Tate going down our only option. Got to play through it he's showing signs of improvement still don't think he's our franchise guy but effort is there.

My main gripe is the Offensive line absolutely putrid. Tiger Shanks the worst of the bunch Julio Garcia for a super senior I thought would be a great leader he's average at best and always taking penalties. Huge disappointment for super senior. Center LG and LT improving but still overwhelmed. UNTIL we get the current guys coached up and the younger guys with nice frames but undersized bodies that still need to mature and put weight on we'll be toiling at the bottom of the league.

On the defensive side we have improved we've forced turnovers our short yardage and goal line defense has been surprising we've stopped a lot of teams going for it on 4th down. I know there are breakdowns in coverage that I like to see cleaned up but let's not kid ourselves defense is a thing of the past all the rules are set up for the offense to score. Turnovers, No big plays, and red zone defense hold teams to field goal are the goals.

Now next year we get the kid from Liberty High School Jayden Maiava is he the franchise? Well by looking at the schools that were recruiting him we stole one. I don't know if Coach MA was recruiting him while at Oregon and begged him to be his guy at UNLV. What I think Coach MA is trying to do is make UNLV in the image of where he had his most success Oregon. He needs his players he recruited to mature and come of age, he needs his QB to make the system work. Oregon at their best was playing fast and loose.

I'm betting he gets there and we start to dominate Reno. Ditto for basketball keep the faith Rebel-netters.

I totally forgot that Friel didn't player his senior year. I think he has the potential and size to become an amazing QB.

Worst college athletic program of all time.

Nothing but bad hires. From presidents all the way to athletic directors.

It’s a mess.
