Recruiting Stories, Almost flips, etc. Time!

Good start but we still need more OL, DL, EDGE and a LB or two not to mention the all important QB to improve going forward.

The transfer portal is where we need to be, STILL!

Just spitballing some stuff; I'll add more if I think of more.

We are waiting on some transfers from big time schools to make their commitments public.
1. Two DBs. One who wasn't great at his last stop, but idk if it was injuries or if he just wasnt good enough to play much. It seems that once injuries plagued their secondary this season, he started to play more. Wasn't super impressive, but he doesnt suck either. Just not great. I think he can do well here.

The other DB is someone that can make a huge difference next season. Two time transfer who didnt do well at his last stop, but was good at his first school. Overall a good player still because his most recent school is in the college football playoff and they wouldnt have taken him if he wasn't good. He visited this past weekend and is very close to Kylin James.

AA can go into more details about these two players. He is the expert on both of these two and could give yall more. This is all I know.

2. The flip that we got and then didnt get and then got and then didnt get again was the local star QB. Pursuit of him was light before because Karson was the focus. Karson decommitted and then the staff pushed hard for this QB.

As recent as two weeks, the word was that him and his teammate would both flip to UNLV. It was basically set in stone. His teammate received an offer from Kansas State and flipped to them. Perfect fit for his skill set because they developed Deuce Vaughn.

This commitment put a lot of things in the air; would the QB stick to his original commitment instead of opting to stay home or would he still go because of his roots/comfortability? Around this time, the QB who started last year for them entered the portal and this committed QB would probably go in and start next season. The teams best WRs were not happy about that at all and went back to the people at the top and they talked to the QB who entered the portal. Word now is that he is coming back for another year. This whole story about how the WRs were unhappy is not a for sure thing. I've talked to multiple people and they're all torn on that stuff actually being said. Some say it did, some say it didnt.

3. The WR transfer that we got is up in the air imo. Obviously its well known now who it is. I personally think that he will not end up here, but I hope he does. Very familiar with Marion and Marion even tweeted out that there was a commitment. Not sure if he'd do that if he didnt fully believe it. You have to assume that Marion knew the kid was staying until after the playoff.

4. *THIS BIT IS NOT MY INFO*
I was told that a TE was coming as well. Coming from a prestigious west coast school. Hes not a great player, but has the tools and size. I'm okay with us taking a flyer on him. He was on campus with Coach Longshore. I am not sure if the Kansas State TE took his spot or not but they have different skillsets.

5. *THIS BIT IS NOT MY INFO*
Reggie Love was rumored. I stopped the sentence there because idk if he was rumored to have visited, would take a visit, or would commit. I told the person that gave me this info that he already committed to Purdue. I am not sure if he was on our radar or if he considered us but that would have been a great get.

6. *THIS BIT IS NOT MY INFO*
Jonathan Odom was someone we were interested in. Florida transfer. Thats all.

7. Melvin Laster Jr. is the biggest dub for us. A great player who plays hard every down. West Virginia pushed very very very hard and offered him some NIL. He took a visit 2 weekends ago. They were actually trending at some point. I found out late last night he was staying committed and signing, which is why I commented what I did on the other post before it was officially announced he was signing.

8. A recruiting tool that I know has been working is taking the recruits on the chopper over the city. That wins everyone over. Hope we can keep using that. If you get to go in the chopper, that means youre wanted.

9. Odom said he knows we will lose some vets to the portal after the bowl. Lets see who it is and if any names go public before the bowl. Who are some people yall think will transfer?

10. Do not sleep on the idea of Maiava transferring after the bowl. I have no intel and am not saying he is or isnt, but with how the QB dominos are falling, that is never out of the question until he steps foot onto the field next season.

11. I believe we will still go after a QB from the portal. I was told that we will go heavy on defense in the portal. I expect us to look at a lot of OL too.

Thanks lobby!
Im not in the camp of NEEDING a QB transfer…, but I’m ALL for competition, if someone is brought in.

It needs to be very selective imo, otherwise you start to undermined leadership, it can become negative with the team. Coaches are adding strength, which they certainly could be, but the other side is you can lose the team playing for each other, ... trusting a team…. Transferring out etc. OR.… tam can see a need for new leadership, which can bring the them together and accelerate the motivation.

We have a very solid Freshman QB that beat out upper class. He has shown great ability… local..etc.. he has his faults, and needs growth, but is a freshman! The growth in an offseason under the same OC should be significant. Bo from TX seems to be a huge commit last year… I’m sure he’s developing in the understanding of the playbook. If those QBs stay around.. I would feel very comfortable, but I’ll leave that to the coaches, which have been doing a good job with the development of these young men.

We aren’t done in the portal. Not by a long shot. There are areas of need not addressed yet.
The entire defense need help as much as they can. DB and S seems like a weakness that may have been magnified because of lack of LB and DL rush as Bull stated?

Lobby did say that Maiava may hit the portal after the bowl game. I really like Maiava as a player. I was disappointed on how hard he get down when he make a mistake. Hope he stays and learn things, he is so close on becoming a great QB. I have never been a QB but I have witnessed some great ones like Montana, Young, Elway, Brady, Kelly, Manning brothers etc...The great ones are very relaxed during the pressure cooking time. Maiava is not close on being relax when the pressure is on.

Maiava has been relaxed on the field, almost too much imo. Emotional off the field because of coaches or loving your team and the moment is different. All of the QBs you listed have been there, otherwise they would have never made that level… unfortunately or fortunately, you didn’t have the ability to have cameras on them 100% of the time when they were freshman In college.

He was definitely loose with the ball at times this year.

He had a very very good freshman season.

He also got away with a number of throws early in the season he got punished for later in the year.

One that comes to mind was vs UTEP. There was a point I want to say 2nd Qtr early 3rd He threw a ball that 100% should have been a pick six but defender flat out dropped it.

He cleans that up, he could be special.

Watch it. I said something similar during the SJSU game and i almost got murdered

I don't see how it's a controversial take at all.

Every QB has an internal clock in their head. Every play is designed/should take X amount of time.

If you get pressure it speeds up that clock.

It eliminates the passes downfield because the QB has to get rid of the ball.

If you are getting a lot of pressure on the QB they start to sometimes sense/feel/assume they need to get rid of the ball sooner even when pressure isn't there.

Plus DBs can only cover for so long. WRs have the advantage because they are running to a designated spot, not reacting like a DB.

Give a QB time guys are going to get open.

On the 2 DB’s both are very good players and have had their most production in BO defense. The Safety is an NFL talent but injuries have plagued his whole career. He is a ball hawk and tackle machine. The other can play multiple positions and has alot of experience. He is a very good athlete with great measurables and I watched him play 3 different sports in high school. He also has been hampered with injuries the last 2 years. If both stay healthy they will play a HUGE part in the defense next year.

As far as QB I’ll add I think their will be someone added in the portal (just my opinion, not fact) I think Maiava will be back due to so many QBs being in the portal already but never say never. If I were in charge I would bring in a veteran to be a solid backup and compete. You have to have 2 viable starting QBs ready. I still really like Bo Edmonson and think he’s gonna be a really really good QB.

Will be interesting to see who the new safeties coach will be but I don’t think it will change anything with the transfer db’s

I'm not a fan of coaches leaving after signing day. He could have done this before tbh; it's not like the offer wasn't on the table.

I understand what you are saying but I dont think you understand what I am saying, maybe? I give you an example, when I was a senior in HS I was working in a downtown casino's gourmet restaurant. Its fine dining and it was fine for real. The kitchen and staff is in a constant race and chaos. To the patrons, it was a well serviced and delightful prepared foods and presentation. Place was so busy that reservation was taken weeks ahead. As a team in that atmosphere, the speed of the communication and execution have to be really close to perfection. We all human, we make mistakes. Ideally, you dont want to magnify that mistakes by showing it. He is young and hopefully he learn from it.

Yes. Thank God.
I remember being surprised Arroyo grabbed two guys who were GAs and giving them full time coach roles. Felt surprising for a first time head coach.

Never met him, but im interested in what's next for that spot!

Do we know where he's headed/publicly? No twitter update and he is still on staff page

Headed back to ECU. I heard that he was going to be replaced after the bowl game, but did not get that confirmed.

I think I do understand what you are saying. I guess my thought is he never showed emotion while the pressure was on…it was not ‘too hot in the kitchen’ during the game… it was after the game was out of reach, and the meal was delivered. It’s still not the best reaction- I’m with you on that.
What I noticed a number of times in other games and especially at that time when the OC was next to him … his demeanor was not positive. The OC and him don’t seem to have a positive chemistry. I’ve seen what looks like crap calls made, putting him in non win situations, then what seems to be blaming him on the sideline.
Anyway, I’m not sure what the team feels about the QB, or the OC, which is what I would want to put my weight on.
I think QB has great upside.
Bo was a great recruit out of TX… not sure where he is at, but again, I’m all for bringing in competition too!

In my mind, it wasn't the sideline reaction during the Boise but the laying flat on his belly for an extended period of time after he threw an interception ...in the SJSU game, I believed. Right there, he show his fallacies and weakness to his enemies/opponents. Before that, everyone was thinking who is this freshman QB that seems so composed and was able to will his team to victory after victory? Short-term memory loss is a good thing when you play at a high level. Next game vs KU is going to be a pressure cooker for Maiava.

Maalik Murphy to Duke. We didnt really have a shot here. The communication was not as strong as I thought it would be, but Maalik wanted a place where he could go in and start for sure. He gets to do that with Manny Diaz at Duke.

That is the thing about bringing in a top QB.
Maiava is going to give anyone we can afford to bring in a run for their money. Qbs aren't going to want to transfer in with a good shot of riding the bench.
And do we want to shoot our NIL wad on a QB when we have the FOY and second team all MW already in the building?
We will likely need quality depth. Bo will be in a similar situation that JM was this year. We will have at least one freshman QB and I imagine a quality Juco transfer that will most likely slot in as a backup.
Which is fine for me. I say lets develop JM.
I would rather spend NIL money on some killer defensive players
