Recruiting, IQ

Let me begin by saying that this is NOT a pro-Rice post. Rice did not win enough games. He's gone. This is about thge way we view players/recruits.

The common wisdom on the board now seems to be that most of the players are unmotivated and/or lack basketball IQ. That falls on the Rice-era recruiting. On the face of it, it makes sense. These players were, indeed brought in by the staff. They are the ones they wanted. But, I have some rservations about this.

Did the players fool Rice? Apparently so.
Did they fool the rest of the staff? Apparently so.
Did they fool the other coaches that recruited them? Well, if they were recruiting them...
Did they fool the evaluators who gave these players such high rankings? Uh, yeah...
Did they fool the posters on this board who encouraged their recruitment, and celebrated their signing?
Did they fool those folks who watched practice? Yep.
Did they fool most of us up to the ASU game. Yes.
Did they fool me? Hell, yes!

So, although they are supposedly unmotivated and basketball stupid, they must have been encouraged to be so by the coaches, after the game with Oregon. Quick work! And, if it's all on the staff, maybe there's hope for these guys, after all.

Now, for my real question. There is some chatter about the recruits for next year. Are they fooling us, also? Are they going to be more of the same? Remember, we thought these guys were the real deal.

For me, I do believe that most of the present players can be valuable next year, for the right coach. Hopefully, new recruits will help. I do agree, though, no more fifth year seniors. My biggest fear is finding the right coach.
