I’m moving back to the Midwest and one thing I’m really looking forward to is the quality sports coverage by the newspapers and local television stations. High Schools and colleges on every level are promoted and the students get to shine in the spotlight. It doesn’t matter if you’re from Coon Hollow or the big city, there’s quality coverage to be found.
This exposure is huge and all schools benefit from the support. Heck, I graduated from a tiny Class A farm town with a population of less than 200 people. We had 4 times as many people at our games than many of the big 4a schools here in Vegas. We all had our pictures in the papers.
In contrast, the coverage of the Vegas sports scene is beyond pathetic. If you’re looking for BYU coverage or a UNLV hatchet piece, I guess this is your kind of town. But, for the rest of us die hard fans is it too much to ask for quality coverage of UNLV and local high school sports?
Jeesh, most news stations don’t even have a true sports segment anymore. They’ll squeeze in three traffic reports and two weather forecasts but no time for sports. Here’s an idea, why not fire Chopper Bob up there wasting fuel. We all know the traffic sucks so why report it. And for the weather, do we really need some goofnut wasting 8 minutes of our day? Just say it’s hot with no chance of rain. There, now we have several minutes to promote our local sports scene.
Really, it’s a win win for everyone. Give our community the chance to know our student athletes; there are plenty of great stories to be told. Who knows, it just might help sell a few tickets and help fill the stands. It just might help sell some newspapers too. And maybe, just maybe ...the RJ could improve on their stellar Alexa Ranking of 454,183.
