It's weird to me having so many true bigs and not starting one of them.

I can see this lineup on the floor a lot, but not sure about it being the starting 5.

I also think Hardy may be the starting PG by the end of the season. I think Noah starts the season, I wouldn't be surprised if Clyburn starts the season as well.

I enjoyed reading the LV Sun write ups on the new players. I have to admit, after reading the Sun articles, that I have little sense of how this team will come together. There are a lot of new pieces and fewer returning veterans. I am intrigued to see how coach MM utilizes the pieces of this puzzle.

Meanwhile, with a little luck, UNLV football can keep me amused until the b-ball season begins in earnest.

I could definitely see a true center starting and a starting line up by the end of the year that looks like:

Amauri Hardy
Bryce Hamilton
Tervell Beck
Shakur Juiston
Mbacke Diong

That is exactly what I think will happen.

There is no way Menzies will play small ball. He has 4 players on the roster that are 6'10" or taller and a lot of length on the wings. Menzies is a defensive minded coach and we will see the 2-3 zone as UNLV's base defense moving forward now that he has the players. Bill Self on NMSU's zone defense under Menzies:

Which is really weird because we’ve been far more efficient offensively, even with poor shooting.... these have been the worst defensive UNLV squads I’ve witnessed.

I dont see any player on the roster starting over Noah. Noah is under-sized and perhaps does not have elite athleticism, but he is heady, has great vision, and has TONS of experience.

The question is, will he be Oscar Bellfield, or Cody Doolin?

I don't know. He was good in high school and seems to be a very smart player. Does he have the athleticism and defensive tenacity that the Rebels have missed in the back court? Can he break down D1 defenses to get to the hoop or dish it off for an easy shot for someone else? I hope he can and keep the starting position. If not then I hope CMM can get someone else in there that can do the job. I am really looking forward to seeing how this season plays out

Doolin probably would've done better under a more effective coach but that being said I think Noah will be more Oscar Bellfield. Steady, not spectacular. Solid veteran who won't make a ton of mistakes like a noob with a too much nervous energy.

Also, is Nick Blair going to be a player who contributes and in what way? Offense? Defense? Energy off the bench guy?

Oscar! Noah can shoot the 3 and is probably a better shooter than OB. On Cody, even before he played a single minute for UNLV, based on 3 years of D-1 it appearred his 3 pt shot was questionable. Also, I didn't like the mechanics of his jumper.

Nunu looks like he's in much better shape in that video than last year. I remember when CMM asked why his practice effort wasn't as good as his game effort and he replied he was a "gamer" to which CMM responded "you better become a "practicer" or you won't have much chance to be a "gamer". I think he has bought in and is working hard in the gym and weight room.

I remember that comment by Menzies. It does appear that NuNu is in much better shape. It's my understanding that he want's to play the 3 badly. He has the skill set to do so and he appears to be a big and strong guy naturally. I would still like to see him 7-10 lbs lighter. He could be a hand full with his strength and the ability to both post up in the paint and face the basket on the wings with a nice handle and cross over.

How about a bully line up?

Joel Ntambe 6’9’’ PG
Hamilton 6’5“ or Clyburn 6’7” Wing
Nunu Beck 6’7” Wing
Juice 6’8” PF
Diong 6’11” or JTT 6’8” 230 C/PF

What a zone D that would be with Joel at the top of the key and length and rebounding everywhere. Much like old USD teams.

We should probably go with this, if not for purely experimental/teambuilding reasons if we start struggling.

My two cents: of course it all depends on the next three weeks of practice but.....I’m going with Diong; Juiston; Beck; Clyburn; and Robotham..

I think so too, but I suspect we will see Hamilton early and often eventually taking over for Clyburn. And then Cly and Hardy being the top two off the bench.

But it’s not a good shooting team - so if Tre is shooting it as well as I’ve heard, he will get some decent minutes too.
