Here is a transcript of the letter that one of the assistants for Air Force sent Tkm and the staff. Pretty cool stuff and explains a little more to the story. Proud of coach Miller....and a good example of trying to create a different culture or changing behaviors.
Tina, Ryan & Todd,
I am sorry it took me a day to write this, but I wanted to make sure I sent this to all of you because I think it is very important. Before our game on Tuesday evening, the Air Force Academy had a brief ceremony for our cadets to take their oath and swear them in as cadets in the United States Air Force Academy, which I know is a very special moment in their lives.
At the time, both teams were shooting and warming up for the game not really knowing what was going on around them (and that includes our guys as well). But one of your assistant coaches, Ryan Miller made an incredibly noble gesture by having the UNLV team stop shooting and pay attention to the ceremony. Obviously, the oath that our cadets take is one of great significance, because they swear to uphold the Constitution of the United States of America and basically place the lives of their fellow countrymen ahead of their own if need be and that is the most selfless act you can take.
I think the type of behavior that Ryan Miller showed needs to be noted and recognized and he should be commended for it. I know in sports (especially at this level), the bottom line is you have to win or your lives can be turned upside down. It just makes me feel good that there are people out there that still have a true respect for what is really important in life. And I also commend Todd Simon for cultivating an environment where one of his coaches would make the effort to promote that type of behavior by one of his assistants.
