Press Conference

If he is a players coach he might just tell them come game night I'm going to be your biggest fan. Not sure what else I would say if in that position. You certainly don't want to interfere with the remaining staff and players.
I would interfere the hell out of this. I would jump in. I would call my friend CBO first to ask him how everyone function like but I would definitely jump in.

One last on TV job! Make sure he plays up UNLV and plays down Cal.
It’s a great Birds Eye view on what he’s got, what he wants to keep, what he wants to shed.

Players that want to stay (and have eligibility left) will go extra hard to try and impress.

Personally; I wouldn’t step on any toes with the staff. It’s just not cool. They’ve got a job to do, let them finish it out. Don’t overshadow the game.

He’s certainly going to be involved, Barry is the one that bailed.

Really interesting dynamic with the LA Bowl. Does Mullen keep a distance and not be a “distraction” to the team? Does he be there to show support for the team? Marion calling plays with Mullen on the sideline or even up in a booth? Does he take the headset and lead the team? CBO didn’t really call a game as much as do game management. I’m interested in seeing how this plays out.

He'll be recruiting next Wednesday.

Alexander is the interim no?

I think you let that play out and then Mullen takes over after that. You don’t want the transition to look dysfunctional? The takeover for Mullen should be after the bowl game.

The current staff was here blood, sweat and tears all year, not Mullen, they should coach the bowl game because they earned it.

Mullen should be shaking hands and kissing babies locally while there is time and then get a jump on recruiting and the portal!

Yeah, he's not jumping in and coaching the bowl game. Needs to be spending as much time as he can evaluating players during their prep week, calling recruits and portal guys and getting his staff in place. They will need to hit ground running once bowl game is over to keep guys and also to bring in new ones. He won't be a distraction

I think he needs to be there for support of these players. Defer to the remaining coaches but be a voice just in case he is needed.
Doesn't need to be part of the game plan which has been in the works for a while now. He can recruit during that time

I want that trophy for UNLV. 9 wins 10 wins, we have no trophy to show for it. This is a LA Bowl trophy. If Coach Mullen want to jump in and steer this ship, let him do it! It is his program now.

He can say hello and be cordial but let the guys who have been here handle the bowl game. He can sit in the box and be on tv but don’t “bigfoot” the guys who have been here, this is theirs, not his!

I’d keep a huge step back, don’t want to disrespect the current coaches … which can jaundice the players. Let them know at a team meeting that you’ll be watching from afar. Attend but stay out of site. I wish he were in the booth or at least making an appearance in the booth to sell the program.

But this is one of those instances where there is right and wrong.

I think the best risk/reward is staying completely in the background, almost like a fan with VIP access.

You bought a house but you cannot move in because a tenant is there? If they lose this game and there is a HC is right there to help...those guys better be ready to explain.

He can only serve as a distraction, imo. He doesn’t know the players, the plays, their abilities, the roster, the other staff …. That’s a huge potential mess.

The staff that remained, they stayed through the very end. Let them run the show for their first - and last time. They earned it.

They have earn it but they are not the HC for a reason. The HC function differently than the assistants. Different just different.

I think he should be at the game just to communicate his support for the team but not be involved in game management. Let the current staff handle it. Live the idea of making an appearance in the media box. And I’m sure there’s players he could recruit while in LA.

Are there any good football players in Los Angeles?

I was only able to listen to a radio interview with Mullen but it seemed like after talking to Harper he "just became excited by the opportunity" and couldn't really come up with a reason why besides everything just seemed to come into place for him and (the way interpreted it) he realized UNLV has a ton of potential and wants to see UNLV realize that potential.

Also I really like the way Harper approached the situation. Mullen said Harper knew he was in town and called him and offered him an opportunity to play golf and talk about the program. It just seemed smooth and professional.
