I was able to catch practice yesterday. Here are some things that stood out.
Decker was very sharp all day. No forced throws and he hit guys in stride and made some throws short over the middle to running backs and Tight Ends. Thomson showed some skill as well. Had a couple really nice completions on out routes and a deep ball to Boyd. Palandech is a distant 3rd in the race. Just not nearly accurate enough and he isnt seeing things like the other guys. After a rough few first sessions he did finish with a couple nice completions though. Cotton and Odell are really focused on getting the QB's to see and make the correct reads.
No surprise but Boyd has stood out big time. Multiple catches in traffic and a few over the top for TD's. On defense Torry McTyer has really stood out at CB. Had a few break ups and a pick six in the flat.
O line work was impressive. The work they are putting in under Garrison and Cotton is night and day from what we saw under Germer. The drills and concepts are much more demanding as is the pace of moving from one exercise to the next. Right now the #1 line appears to be LT-Saxelid, LG- Scoggins, C-Kreitler, RG-Noone, RT- Peterson . We will see if this holds up. I think some shuffling might occur on the right side.
D Line work from Seumalo is fun to watch as well. Lots of very specific techniques and very intense drills really focusing on detaching from blocks. Again never remember seeing the detail that we are seeing now. #1's appear to be DE- Finau, DT-Fauhako, DT Hughes, DE Sanitoa . The big guys in the middle are really stepping up.
Special teams work is much more detailed you will be happy to know. Kick Off coverage is not just walk through. They drill in groups on how to attack and block. LaRussa really gets on guys during these sessions whether its field goal, punt or kick off work.
The practices are roughly 2 hours but feel longer because of the pace and how much they are getting in . The defense is still a little ahead but the offense is making strides as camp goes on. I think part of the issue right now is the blocking schemes they are tying to employ with the O line are still being installed. The other part of this is the RB's need to know where they are going. Basically see the lane, put a foot in the ground and go. Once everyone is on the same page it will run much smoother. Something else of huge note. During Haucks tenure you would routinely see someone taking a lap for not paying attention or a fumble or whatever. The reason this happened was there was honestly a good portion most of the team was just waiting around on the sideline and not engaged. Right now most drills have most the team involved. When they are in 11v11 or 7v7 all groups 1,2s and 3s are getting reps so there isnt much down time. This team will not be tired in the 4th quarter of games I can tell you that.
Snaps were taken from Shotgun and under center so we will be multiple from the early looks of things. Defense has some pre-snap movement and guys are playing multiple spots. It will interesting to see what the final product on that side of the ball will be come fall.
