Possible pick up or Williams back up plan??

Not out of the realm of possibility. We’re definitely underdogs to land him, but It could happen

Did he enter the transfer portal? If so, even if he doesn't declare by June 1, couldn't he still transfer here or elsewhere?

Per nbadraft.net williams went up 30 spots to number 72, and he is 33rd on the 2023 mock. If his stock going up he may stay in the draft. He worked out for Orlando today. Ugh! He will be 22 in Sept so maybe he will feel age will work against him if he stays.

On the one hand, sad news but on the other hand, good news for DW!

Can't blame him for jumping if he's got a decent shot especially at his age. I didn't know he was almost 22. Sucks for us though. Bright side, the opening might entice a quality transfer to come over with a virtually guaranteed slot as a starter.

72nd is 12 outside of drafted. 33rd for 2023 is a chance to play his way into the first round next year as the featured guy in the Rebel offense. That’s the big bucks...

Yep. 2nd round pick in the NBA is like a guy going in the 5th in the NFL.

There's a path to the big money, but it ain't easy..

If Williams went up that much in nbadraft.net he must have killed it during a private workout as he was not invited to the combine. He might think he goes higher with more workouts and stay in the draft. The way the draft discounts seniors and go more on potential, maybe he would not be first round next year. Last year I saw flashes where he should have been taking the big shots and no relying on bham going 1 on 5.

The problem for DW is there are 5 players between him and the 60th spot who have also jumped more than 30 positions.

It doesn't look like he's going to get drafted. His decision will almost certainly be to play in the NCAA and increase his chances that way or play in the "G" league. IMO, that's a really hard decision as not that many players get drafted from the "G" league and he is aging. Plus, if he has a really break-out year with us he may get in the first round next year and that is GOLD. It will all depend on his advisors.

if he still is undecided before the workout , then seems like maybe he has gotten feedback that he should return to college. has already tried out for a few teams.

NIL him a year of G-league salary. Well worth the money.

I've gone back and forth with this in my mind trying not to be biased in this case.

What is better for his pro basketball career? Going to the G league, no school, being trained by professionals for the professional game vs staying in school. And for argument's sake we will say for the same amount of compensation.

From a skill development standpoint, at least from a coaching/practice perspective, G league seems to have the advantage.

However a rookie free agent may not get a lot of run in the D league, so in game experience, arguably the most important may be reduced.

Returning can improve his stock. If he can elevate to an actual draft pick it signficantly changes his liklihood of extending his NBA/G league careeer. If he get in the first round, his chances go up exponentially.

I work with a guy who was a strength coach in the NBA for several seasons. Attention definitely is not equal in the NBA. The players that take more investment ( contracts/draft picks) get much more rope and run. Street free agents really have to be special to get the same shot.

Of course there is celebrity. The best UNLV players doesn't mean much, but it means much more than a bench G leaguer. If he gets a likeness deal, that could have some legs where he could continue that beyond his UNLV career. Especially if he has a good year and/or UNLV makes a bit more noise next season.

I’ve been surprised before and wrong before … but even though I think he does have talent … didn’t picture him anything close to being ready for the league.

I knew Wood had more than enough talent for the NBA, but also knew his head wasn’t right at his age. But he still went pro before he should have, even though he told everyone he was coming back (yes, I was surprised).

We just don’t know what is in a kids’ head either. What we prioritize might not be a consideration for them. Everyone is different.

I mean, I know of a case where a kid had every intention of returning, but certain circumstances (not trouble, not grades) “forced” him to go pro earlier than he wanted.

We just don’t know all the factors, only what we read and from our preconception of their individual situation.

Is there a date that he has to decide by, in order to return to college? I thought I remembered hearing early June, but I could be wrong on that.

I think he should come back to maximize his chance to get exposure as he grows… if he came back and UNLV had a tournament run with him playing a key role, that might do wonders for him.

He should come back and get a degree. If his basketball career falls through he can coach Gorman.

The decision has been made.

What a joke. I feel bad for the guy with the advice his handlers are giving/making. Very low percentage chance he gets drafted in the second round at all. Next year he could have been a first rounder.
