My kids are at an age where it’s not critical (to be 1st (autistic) and to be 3rd grade, but I’m the type that prepares, allows for options. I’ve always been that way.
But I cannot tell the way education is going to go. The union itself makes me sick to my stomach, to me it’s an obvious power play.
I truly believe that most teachers do want to teach, do want to make a difference in kids’ lives and those are the types I absolutely support. Their work is critical and when they love what they do and believe in what they do, it does make a difference.
Still, there are those that are, like in any profession, lazy and just push the papers and kids through, just getting the check and not really giving a shit. Those types - not my kind of peeps.
I am an involved parent and I always will be. Teachers that love teaching like having parents involved, to those that don’t give a shit, I guess I’m just a pain in the ass. I mean seriously, when I had kids, they skyrocketed to the top of my priorities and left everything else far in the dust. And schooling is a big part of that now. I know I’ll be involved, but don’t know how deeply I will go. If the pay was substantially better, I’d have taught. I did take courses for teaching at UNLV after my degree in case it was a route I wanted to pursue but ultimately decided against it. Was hoping to finish up hospital work and head back to UNLV to teach my field to end my career, but UNLV stopped my program about a decade ago (they were in the mix of all those program cuts).
But now, I’m preparing for alternate education. Homeschooling, pods, private schools, even considering moving if it’s a scholastic benefit for my children, I can work anywhere with my degree, so can my girl … not exactly sure what I’ll end up doing, but I don’t like the direction of public education right now.
Aside from private school, does anybody have experience with homeschooling? I can early retirement if need be and handle my own kids’ education when the time comes. Any insight with this sort of thing?
