Obviously Dixon getting out was not what anyone wanted. God forbid anyone in this city keep their mouths shut. But since it is there is some misinformation that should be fixed.
1. This deal is not done. It's not close to being done either. That's why it is disappointing to see it go public. There are issues that are not settled.
2. There are other candidates that are in play. Some names have been speculated here, some haven't. But we have been in contact with many people and there is a list of people that want this job that are currently working and will be coaching in the NCAA tournament.
3. Because people are still working is why names need to be kept as quiet as possible. Names getting out early hurt the process. You may think just talking about it here has no effect but I assure you it does.
4. Rick Pitino. My personal belief is that this will not happen. I hope I am wrong.
Myself and others have looked at this job from the outside. It's hard to get perspective when you care about the program like all of us do. It's hard for me to say this but it's true. We have potential but are living off our past from 25 years ago. We are not a top 50 program right now. Coaches look at this job like you would a classic automobile in a junkyard. You need to put some work in and fix it up but if you do you have a beast on your hands.
We have won 3 NCAA tournament games in 25 years
We haven't won an outright conference regular season title in 15 years
We haven't won a postseason game in the last 6 years.
But some people's perception in this town is we are on par with top 30 programs. We aren't. We have the facilities and tradition but not the results. That's why when Dixon's name came up it baffles me why some people think he isn't good enough for us. We'd be lucky to have him. We are talking about a guy that is the winningest in Big East history and currently coaches in the ACC and he is thinking about this job and some of us say he isn't good enough for us? Here's a newsflash he's won 12 NCAA tournament games as a head coach, 4 Times the amount we have in the last 25 years. He's won Big East titles. The last 2 years we have been 7th in the MWC. His teams have been in the top 25 every season he has been a head coach except for one. Where are we?
What I am saying is that when Pitino came up everyone is now judged against him and that isn't fair. Dixon may be the next head coach or maybe he won't be. But to compare them to Pitino should be flushed out of everyones head. Think about where we really are now and how far we have to go. UNLV admin and the boosters know we need the program elevated. They know we need a great coach. Everyone is on the same page. Trust the process.
