I love this signing because he potentially feels a spot role not some run of the mill combine stat guy a guy that plays with no heart. Love the undersized speed guy.
Will I know you put this up as another way of demeaning the signing but that is exactly why you don't get it, we need guys like this is it a gamble yes but the traditional old combine guys you hock constantly don't cut it unless you can measure heart, hard work and determined drive ..... Which you can't. Exactly why there wasn't a starter in the Super Bowl on either team above a 2 star player, the Seahawks get it maybe you will to someday.
Actually, there weren't any 5* guys in the Super Bowl but there were plenty of 3* and 4* players along with a good group of 2* players. Stars are more legit in major areas the national scouts evaluate rather than places off the path. Its rare for national guys to evaluate talent in smaller states and they do rate at a scale.
Overall, the evaluation does reinforce that my opinion wasn't extreme. McCoy is a slim player with a DB type frame that would be hard pressed to get to 215 and be effective. Its rare for programs to use undersized pass rush specialist and the DC has no history of doing so. He will need to develop a primary position or be a special teams guy.
As to the areas Scrub stated produces a ton of talent, UNLV can really take who they want as they are usually slim on FBS option. Excluding the UNLV signing this year, this is a breakdown of FBS signees from the areas over 5 years.
(Spaced at 2015, 2014, 2013, 2012, 2011)
Pittburg goes 1, 2, 0, 1, 4
Eric Dargan (Oregon) and Josh Jenkins (Army) are starters
Vallejo area goes 0, 2, 0, 0, 0
Jalen Canty never enrolled at Washington State making the number actually 1
Antioch area goes 0, 0, 0, 0, 1
Kristoff Williams spent a season as a starter at Washington State but left football as a senior to focus on his post football career.
That is with 7 FBS or FCS school surrounding the area.
Many Folsom guys usually land at Cal Poly where early target Tyler Whisenhunt from California HS also landed.
Marcus Bruce went Sac State.
As for Concord with De La Salle and Clayton Valley Charter it goes 2, 4, 3, 3, 4
2014 signee Kevin Griffin transferred to Cal Poly after one year at WSU, 2013 included David Moffit who signed with UNLV, 2012 included UNLV WR Anthony Williams, 2011 included Kevin Chase who never made it to campus at SDSU
If you account for that the actual players minus UNLV goes 2, 3, 2, 2, 3
Few that actually sign rarely go to mid-majors
I'm sure there is talent in the area but not an excessive amount and much that is available to UNLV are FCS caliber or projects. Javin White had offers from both New Mexico schools but the remaining grabs from California and Washington either had no offers or the FCS options.
Maybe they were just overlooked but all come from areas that see nearly every FBS program passes through to take a peak. Hopefully they are the guys to get this program over the hump.
Just a side note: Between my parents, they had 22 siblings so I when I note family but there are a ton of us.
I have a lot of family in the Chabot, Eastmont and Trestle Glen area in the Bay so I familiar with the area. The majority of times, I travel to the area for the major football camps.
