I have been a UK and UNLV fan for quite a while. I became a fan as a kid watching those amazing Tark teams. I rarely post at all and have never posted on the UNLV sites. So take what I have to say with a grain of salt if you choose but it is just my opinion.

Having lived in KY for a big portion of my life I became a huge fan of Donnie Tyndall while he was at Morehead State. Morehead is about the toughest place to recruit that you can imagine and not only did Tyndall recruit, he recruited amazingly. Just pulling in Kenneth Faried at Morehead speaks for itself. He went to NCAA tourney several times at a school where it was almost unheard of, beating Louisville and Rick Pitino in the opening round in one of those trips. He won 2-3 NCAA games at Morehead.

I was excited when Coach Tyndall went to Southern Miss and he excelled there as he has always done. He then went to Univ of Tenn. His tenure at Tennessee was obviously short bc of a vindictive assistant that was fired at South Miss starting a fuss and causing the ncaa to investigate. The AD at Tenn did not support his coach and panicked way before all the info was available. At most, when all is said and done in the next few weeks it looks like Tyndall will get a 8-9 game suspension just like Boeheim just completed.

Anyone who isn't familiar, Tyndall is universally considered one of the best X's and O's coaches around, he recruits well above his level at every school he has been, and if we pluck him up as the next coach we can get a young active coach that would be incredibly loyal to us and won't jump at a bigger opportunity. I just think it would be a home run for UNLV.

Like I said, just my opinion but I do think Tyndall will get plucked up by someone sooner rather than later. He is an up and coming coach with a good rep among other coaches. It would be a great choice for UNLV.

Thanks for joining the board Donnie. That was a hell of a first post.

Haha. I hear ya it is a strange first post. I have been posting on the UK board here and there. Always check in on UNLV boards but never really post on any boards. Understand the skepticism. Not here to flame or bait at all. Just have always rooted for and followed Rebs and thought Tyndall would be a home run under the radar hire. I think UNLV needs a young and loyal guy that is as good at X's and O's as they are recruiting. I am certainly biased bc I have been a fan of his for awhile and I have watched him rise thru the coaching ranks and would love to see him at UNLV. That's all.

Any chance Tyndall can be at the T&M Tuesday night?

I bet he would be in a heartbeat. The fact that he is prolly hungry to get back into coaching after a year off is part of the reasoning why I think it could be a good fit. But you guys mark my words. Once he gets the NCAA deal in his rear view he will get scooped up by a good AD looking for a home run. He has too good of a reputation as a coach not to. Again all JMO.

Didn't intend to start an argument with my post. Truly just my opinion. If u disagree I understand and can respect that.

Mjs just seems butt hurt about a lot of things and likes to pick fights with a lot of people. He seems like one of those guys who thinks it should be his way or the highway. He doesn't really like to have discussions.

Good first post. Thank you for your insight.

Ok whew I thought he just had it out for me.

Thanks for the kind welcome. It seems like the new coach search just kicked into high gear yesterday. I have read some very good options in other posts this morning. Guys like Archie Miller who are young up and coming IMO are the best bet.

Right. That's what I'm doing.
Hope you have a better day.

Congrats on getting your 3rd ever "like" in this thread.

Understand the concern about the NCAA. I truly think it will be a very minor punishment but understood nonetheless.

If a guy like Archie Miller, who I saw referenced in another thread, would be willing to come then absolutely go for it. That would certainly be a home run. Just not sure a guy like that will be possible but u definitely gotta make the call.

Just don't wanna end up with an older washed up coach that is at UNLV for the twilight of his career. A coach that is young, determined and hungry would be a success here IMO. Anyone that fits that bill would be good. Which is why I initially thought of Tyndall.

I'm not sure I care if it's a younger coach or an older coach. Experience as a HC is a must this time around IMO. Probably goes without saying.

So many possibilities. Archie would be a great candidate. If Gregg Marshall were interested that would do it for me. Maybe unrealistic, IDK. Not sure what he makes.

And congrats on your 3rd ever "like", Atrain. It took you only 6 posts. BleedRed has has 3 in 117.

Lmfao continue on bud. You may care about "likes" and that may make you feel better, but I actually have a life outside of a message board. But please get butt hurt more.

And fwiw, Gregg Marshall turned down 3 mil at Alabama. No shot at Gregg. I think Dan Majerle, Bryce Drew, or Brad Underwood would be great, realistic options.

Awwwww, what's the matter guy nobody ever likes... Whose crying now?

Once in every 39 times you post somebody says, "hey, I agree with that, let me hit the like button."

It's ok, people just don't get your brilliance. Anyone who uses insults like "butt hurt" in consecutive posts must be brilliant. Thanks for the troll.

Dan Majerle is in the middle of building a program up in his hometown where he is a rock star with his friend J Collangelo. GC is a private school , so they don't disclose how much he makes financially, but rumors are he makes ~1.8mill a year. Put it in the extreme long shot category.

Brad Underwood would be a good hire, but he will be bolting for the KSU job the second it opens.(which looks likes end of March)

Bryce Drew would also be a good hire, but he seems entrenched at Valpo with a long family history there. His dad was head coach there for 22 years, his brother was a head coach there and is now Baylor's head coach, of course Bryce graduated from there and is in his 5th season there. It doesn't seem like he's leaving for anything less than a P5 job, like his brother. I will upgrade this from extreme longshot, to just longshot after reading an article posted by Gator in another thread though.

Just to answer your question about Gregg Marshall. He just resigned this last year for 7 years. Average salary is 3.3 million (3 for the for 3 and and 3.5 for the last 4). He also has bonus options that bring it up to a possible 4+ million. He has access to private jets for recruiting, team flights, and personal flights. Alabama gave him an offer of 4.5 Million that he turned down to stay here.

Not saying you can't lure him away from WSU, but its going to take a large sum of money and guarantees. Firing a coach in the middle of the year can have the side effect of making new coaches a little leery of accepting an offer there.

Thanks for the post. Respectfully, I think UNLV is a much better place to coach basketball than Alabama or Wichita St, with the exception of the current position pay (which could change). I also think Vegas is a significantly better place to live, no offense intended. Different people value different things obviously.

If UNLV goes big money for a coach it will obviously be booster driven. People will debate what's possible and realistic (for another thread), but nobody really knows how much we could spend on the right candidate. That said, it's hard for me to imagine GM is the one our biggest boosters would rally behind landing first. A part of me thinks theyd roll the brinks truck out for Pitino, but less probably for GM. Admittedly, I don't think he's a real candidate.

Thanks for your input on GM. You've got a fine coach there.

Agree with everything you stated above 100%. But here is one thing that coaches may like: UNLV is the only game in town. The team is loaded with talents and the area is a recruiting hot bed. Plus, UNLV doesnt have KU or KSU to contend with for recruits.

Correct, Though Marshall does like being the big man on Campus. There is no football at WSU to compete with. Though you are correct, we do have to compete with other bigger schools in the area for recruits. He's done a pretty good job recruiting though. No 5 stars, but multiple 4 star players incoming.

That is a very good selling point to a coach though. The location will either be a selling point or a hindrance (Vegas) depending on the coach.

I agree with your statement. UNLV has way more "upside" than Wichita. It has the name recognition and better conference, that will allow easier access to post season tourneys even with just above average seasons. Currently, there is little margain for error for WSU in the Valley due to how horrible our conference mates are. Thankfully, at least for the last 4-5 years, we haven't had much in the error column.

Props to you guys. WSU basketball has been pretty special the last couple of years.

And during that 4-5 years we've been here watching agonizingly frustrating basketball. Great recruits, weak results. Here's hoping we turn the corner with our next HC. Truth be told he may be here already.

Thanks again for your input. Enjoyed the conversation. I'd love to see us play WSU every year. Good competition.

You can thank the conferences for that ...

With that said, I think even with your down years, your RPI is better than 80% of our league, so I'd gladly take a Home/Home with you. It can't be any worse than having 8 required games against 200+ RPI teams (thanks Bradly, Drake, Missouri St and Loyola) ...

How about we break off out of respective conferences and form our own league? We'll bring Gonzaga along..

WSU has been awesome. Been a secret fan for quite some time now..

Minus the hose job refs at home but thats normal.

I think Donnie Tyndall would be a great get. His zone defense and full court press but work well. Let's see what the NCAA hands down first.
