UNLV: Cal outside linebackers coach Keith Heyward is expected to become the new defensive coordinator at UNLV, Bruce Feldman tweets this morning. We can confirm the hire. Heyward previously worked with UNLV head coach Marcus Arroyo at Oregon, where Heyward served as co-defensive coordinator. Yesterday, we shared that UNLV is hiring their new offensive coordinator from the Raiders' staff.

Everything I can find on Heyward is that he is a top recruiter, and that a lot of programs at least were looking at him as a coach when replacing staff.

Good hire. Has certainly paid his dues and, as mentioned above, is a great recruiter.

I don't think there's a spring signing period. There's an early and a late signing period and both have passed. I think you can grab somebody from the portal at any time.

There are a couple of Cal defensive transfers still available that could help. Jaylen Martin a DB didn’t play much for them. Would probably be a depth piece for us, but who knows. More intriguing though is LB Evan Tattersall who started for them for awhile. He got replaced, but at a school like UNLV would most likely at least contend for a starting position.
