MWWire's Top 52 players in the MW

That is a fact. So, is Armani the only one we can count on to be in the Top 50? I'd have to put CW and, maybe, Polu in there, as well. Any other candidates? Javin? Nick D.? Whoever they put in there, I think there will be more Rebels in the Top 50 come the end of the season. Guys coming off injury, or who have more help this year so the opposition will have to play them honest... those are the guys I'm looking at to surprise.

Looking at it objectively, Javin and the WR (who was a freshman last season and whose name is slipping my mind) are the only two impactful returners we have. Are either top 50 in the MWC? Maybe. Hopefully. Depends on how they get utilized.

Tyleek Collins is most likely the freshman you are thinking of. He was "honorable mention" on that mwwire top 50 list, meaning he won't be in the top 50.

Justin Polu was not honorable mention on that list, and since he was UNLV's only non-senior to get all-conference recognition last season he will definitely be in the top 50.

Since LB Vic Viramontes was not on the the mwwire honorable mention list, you would have to assume he is also top 50.

Charles Williams? He was not mentioned, but maybe he seems to have been forgotten by a lot of those reporting on the MWC. I'm guessing he won't be on the mwwire top 50, but I'm looking forward to him proving them wrong.

With 12 teams in the MWC, most teams will have 3 or fewer players in the top 50, since Boise State, Utah St, Fresno, and (oddly enough) Hawaii will account for more than half of the spots and the other 8 teams will average about 3.

Collins...

And Collins had his success with Max at QB.

I might be reading your post wrong, but why would Vic be top 50?

Not knocking the guy. Think he will be a solid addition.

Just can't see putting a guy with zero stats in the top 50..

As far as I know, every player starts with zero stats for this next season. The list is based on perceived potential based on past play, and based on that I could understand where Vic could sneak into the top 50 since he is a high level recruit based on MWC recruiting. I believe he may be good enough to make the difference in one or two games. A couple of balls bounce the right way, and UNLV could go to a bowl game.

It's going to take a winning season to get more Rebels in the top 50 list. If you're a sports writer trying to come up with a top 50 list for the MWC why would you put more than 1 or 2 UNLV players on it. It's the reality, as well as the perception.

When I at the depth chart for UNLV Football, I pause at DT, and I think why would you have thise 2 players listed 1and 2, at that position, when they barely saw the field on what was Tony's worst performing team last year. After the Arkansas St. game, when UNLV took 5 weeks off, you would have thought the ball boy might have played. Yet this spring's depth chart shows 2 players who did't have an opportunity to show their skills.

I think for Tony to have a successful season his 2019 recruiting class is going to have to have a big impact, especially on defense.
Specifically: D-Line Noah McGregor, Tavai Tuitasi, or Naki Fahina ( 2 of those 3 could easily be one or two on the depth chart)

Vic Viramontes and Rayshad Jackson will probably be starters.

DB's Jeremiah Houston, Gamon Howard, & Jamel Hamm ( 2 of those 3 should see plenty of playing time.

I don't have a crystal ball, but Tony needs to shake things up this season. I thought UNLV's defense would improve under Skipper last season (it didn't). Perhaps implementing a new defensive system takes time, but that time will run out this year if the Defense gives up 30 points plus agame.

I will hope for the best, and see what happens, but I think the 2019 class has a big impact on our Defense or Tony's team won't win 6.

I get that, but he played one year at Juco as a LB. He's a converted QB.

He was plugged in day one for Spring with the first team.

He was solid. Will definitely contribute.

I would just be more inclined to rank guys that have actually taken snaps in conference games or at the FBS level is all. Just like I wouldn't rank a true freshman top 50 either.

This is what I'm trying to tell people.

For all the talk about the turnover on defense, the majority of the guys running first team in Spring were returners.

That could change in fall when everyone is healthy; and the Juco guys come in.

Malakius and Neal struggled to get run last year on a bad defense. And both ran 1st team in Spring.

McCoy returns, White returns.

The entire secondary was basically the same as last year with Flowers, Austrie, Plummer and Tejchman (who played a lot late in the year).

Like you mentioned there are some promising JUCO guys coming in the Fall.

And I agree they have to be impactful. Not just contributors.

Upon further review I agree that we probably won't see Viramontes on this top 50 list.

The reason I suggested he would make it was because he wasn't listed on their "honorable mention" and I saw one of the other two guys that Athlon had listed as candidates for "MWC newcomer of the year" as an honorable mention.

We might.

Guy has talent.

Was highly rated.

A lot is expected from him.

I just think it's hard to slot a guy in the top 50 based on potential, over players with actual production.

Could be on the end of the season list.

I think his time as a QB will help in diagnosing plays.

I'm down on this year for a couple reasons.

First, the schedule. Its rough.

Second, the defense. It was bad last year. It was bad by UNLV standards last year and that's saying something.

I think the defense will be better, how much better is the big question.

To get to a bowl, they probably have to shave almost 10 points per game off.

It only took 21 days, but we got one: Charles Williams at #32. I'm actually kind of surprised to see him on the list, but he's definitely deserves it if he plays like he did in 2016.

I think he's shown enough sharing the work load, that now that he is 'the guy' a big year is expected.

That's my guess..

I have concerns with Williams. Has never quite shown the same pop/effectiveness since the injury. Maybe he needed extra time last year to get healthy. Was he an Achilles repair? I can't remember.

I thought CW looked strong and confident the latter half of the year and many times thought he should have received more carries. But with that said I believe it was important for Lex to break some UNLV records.
