MWC 2020 Football in Jeopardy? SDSU/SJSU/Fresno Closed

Comm Thompson should have been fired years ago. If the MWC decides to not play football and basketball, then it is time to disband the conference and possibly athletics. If football and basketball are not played, why not save 10's of millions in scholarships and coaching salaries and get rid of all of the athletic departments? If Thompson says we will not have athletics this next year, why would we even have a MWC anymore?

In my opinion if SJSU, FSU and SDSU do not play, we fire the MWC Comm and schedule around those 3 schools so the rest of the programs are able to play.

How do we know Nevada won't follow Cali? I can see both Reno and UNLV going online only and that would kill sports. Colorado is flaky enough to follow Cali. I've seen nothing that would indicate we are opening in the Fall.

NCAA has already said no on campus studies / no sports.

I'm gonna go with the possibly unpopular opinion and say that I hope the football season is cancelled. This is even after I bought my tickets already. I don't want a half-assed product and a crap game-time experience (i.e. I have to wear a mask and do social distancing).

Roll my tickets over to next year after we have a vaccine in place.

UNLV has already said they will open up the school for students next semester. It comes down to either UNLV goes full out and has an athletic department, or If they decide not to have athletics, then they should cancel it all for every sport including scholarships, and not expect the tax payers to subsidize hundreds of students and coaching staff without a product.

"UNLV has already said they will open up the school for students next semester."

I've been looking for that and can't find any specific statements anywhere. On May 4, there was a letter to students that said they "Anticipate" the majority of classes will be on campus in the Fall. They also said to expect more online classes than usual. Additionally, they said they intend to have some on campus classes for the Summer III term, in July.

None of this specifically says classes will start on campus.

I think the Cali. closures will put huge pressure on the regents and the Presidents of Reno and UNLV. To me, it would be amazing if Cali closed and we opened, especially considering our deaths per million residents are @ 30% higher than Cali.

There could be a work around, Thompson's comments are very shortsighted and premature at this time.

If campuses are closed, but classes are in session, then athletes could attend school anywhere, correct?

To say there would be no way to make accommodations is stupid.

Now when fall rolls around, it may not be feasible to play sports, in a safe way. That is understandable. But if it is, then you can work around it. Share facilities, go to remote areas, etc.

Hell they could go with the NBA's proposed idea. Have every team come to Las Vegas. Stay in hotels play in fields around the valley. Granted the MWC would have the budget that the NBA would have, but it could be an option if they tried to do it on the cheap.

Well Thompson said if there's no football they'll be no other sports this next year because for most schools they make their money in football to cover the cost of the rest of their sports.
There's going to be schools across the Nation that want to cancel and there's going to be schools that want to be opened. The schools that want to cancel the football season get them off our schedule and find schools that want to be open and play them.
The mountain West is going to cancel the season for year then lets play independent for one year

Great idea. Float the idea with the kids that they can transfer and put the pressure on the Cali schools. We will take them all....come on down. Get away from that god forsaken state ...UGH !

Thompson is getting paid no matter what, at least he thinks he is, so he really doesn't give a shit about the financial impact.

We're getting closer and closer to becoming "East California". 10 more years of political leadership like we have now and you won't be able to tell the difference.

As they should want. SDSU is having it's most successful run in school history. Sure they have had a significant coaching staff shakeup, but they are most likely going to be a top the MWC West. To be clear,I want to play FB this year. But if UNLV was coming off 10 years of legimitate success and was told "no, you can't play" I would be up in arms.

State income tax!

I fully expect a big push for a state income tax here when casino income goes down.
Problem with that is it would require a constitutional amendment:

9.  No income tax shall be levied upon the wages or personal income of natural persons. Notwithstanding the foregoing provision, and except as otherwise provided in subsection 1 of this Section, taxes may be levied upon the income or revenue of any business in whatever form it may be conducted for profit in the State.

That's the part of the state constitution in which the powerful mining lobby had it written in that mining tax could never go over 5% of the profit, so with clever bookkeeping becomes a tiny tiny percentage of mineral sales... probably not enough to cover road costs, regulation, etc that the industry costs the state.
